The UNCWelcome committee has worked diligently to provide a balanced schedule of events that will appeal to a diverse audience. Through the wide variety of programs offered, we encourage the full participation of all students, and have worked to make events and programs accessible to everyone. Many of the events are specifically targeted to off-campus, non-traditional and transfer students. Look for those words in the event titles. Other events are intended for all students, faculty and staff, and are very family friendly as well. Look for the Family Friendly icon throughout this booklet.

Convocation is UNCW’s official academic welcome for the Class of 2018. First-year students will receive small-group assignments by email from the Office of Transition
Programs to let them know where to report by 10 a.m. Faculty members will be there to welcome the groups and offer their perspectives on academic success.
After the small-group meetings, students will proceed to the Clock Tower for the unveiling of the Class of 2018 flag, a class photo and the beginning of their first
“Trask Trek.” At Trask Coliseum, the formal ceremony will begin with a welcome by the provost and comments by the chancellor. Dr. Candace Thompson, assistant professor in instruction technology, foundations and secondary education, will be the featured speaker. Returning student leaders will be available throughout the morning to provide guidance and answer questions.
