“Teachers of Tomorrow” Day – February 20, 2009 Description As part of The Watson School of Education’s new, official partnership with the NCAE’s North Carolina Teacher Cadet Program, we will be hosting our first Teacher Cadet Day on campus Friday, February 20th, 2009 from 9am - 2:00pm. The planned activities are designed to provide cadets with the experience of being on campus, while learning about UNCW, the admissions process, financial aid opportunities and scholarships. The cadets will also take a tour of the Watson School of Education building, learn about our programs from WSE faculty members, and attend professional development workshops. Opening speaker Marty Sugerik - “Taking the Road Less Traveled” Our opening speaker will be Mr. Marty Sugerik, a creative and innovative thinker from NCDPI’s High School Turnaround team. Mr. Sugerik is an 11-year veteran teacher who has a lateral entry background from the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power Program. He is currently working on his doctorate in Educational Leadership and has research interests in Mathematical Literacy, Project-based Learning and Classroom Management through Instruction. Professional Development In addition to the UNCW-specific workshops, there will also be a professional development component led by WSE faculty, specific to teaching, where cadets will attend workshops on the following: - ‘Gaming’ and its use in the classroom – Dr. Albert Ritzhaupt Professional Teacher organizations - Dr. Kathy Fox & the SNCAE International Study opportunities for future teachers – Dr. Rich Huber Betty Stike Education Lab & Resource Center – Ms. Becky Walker/Ms. Kathryn Batten Goals: - Increase student interest in teaching as a profession Experience professional development at the university level Provide students the experience of being a student on a university campus Educate students about UNCW, WSE programs, admissions/financial aid/scholarships, International study opportunities and professional organizations for teachers. College Rd., this will be the last LEFT turn you can make onto campus onto Hurst Drive. Go to the traffic light, and turn LEFT and then a quick RIGHT up behind the Softball field. If you are driving a vehicle or van, you will be parking in LOT “i”, located off of Randall Drive. Traveling south on S. College Rd., turn LEFT onto Randall and it will be the last LEFT you can make before the dead end at Reynolds Dr. Please print out a campus map so you are clear. Lunch – There are a couple options for lunch. If you choose to take your students to Wagoner Dining Hall, the cost for a meal would be $7.39 + tax = $7.89. This is an all-you-can-eat buffet set up and * PLEASE NOTE * Students who bring their lunch will not be allowed to enter Wagoner as it is a pay to enter hall. These students can eat outside on the steps of Wagoner or over in the Ed Building Atrium or… If you choose to take your students to the Hawk’s Nest in the Fisher Student Center, students will have the option of buying lunch at Quizno’s, Chick-fil-A, Freshens, Sushi Station, The Varsity Grill, The Hawk Wok, The Tuscan Oven, Jole Mole (Mexican) and Express.
