2014-15 Orientation Leader Information
Position Description
The goal of an Orientation Leader (OL) is to convey important information about UNCW and assist new students
and their families with the transition to college life. The OL ensures that the Orientation Program is beneficial,
exciting, and educational in its content and presentation.
Requirements
• Must have a willingness to reach out to new students
• Must not enroll in Summer 1 classes (no exceptions)
• Must return full time in fall 2015
• Must have at least a 2.5 GPA and be in good disciplinary standing
• Must have an open mind and a positive attitude
• Must be dedicated to the OL team
• Must be a role model
• Must be able to work with a diverse group of people
Responsibilities
• Participating in all Orientation events
• Facilitating the adjustment of new students and their parents to our campus and community
• Explaining academic opportunities and procedures
• Acquainting new students with the campus services and building locations
• Preparing orientation materials (stuffing packets, making name tags, etc.)
• Aiding in the development of class schedules
• Responding to questions, concerns, and sensitive issues of students and parents
• Assisting with various activities as needed throughout the year
• Work either the May 13th & 14th or the August 12th & 13th transfer orientation sessions in addition to the June
freshman and transfer orientation session beginning on May 31 st and ending on June 17th and the August
freshman orientation session on August 16th-17th.
Training
OL’s must attend ALL training sessions! Our first meeting will be December 4, 2014 from 6:30-8:30pm. All
training thereafter will take place every Wednesday 5pm-7pm, starting January 14, 2015 and ending April 29, 2015.
We have planned a mandatory retreat on January 16th -18th, 2015 at Ft. Caswell as well as the SROW Conference
March 26th -29th. In preparation for SROW, we will meet February 7 th, 8th, 21st and 22nd, 2015. Further training will
commence prior to the summer Orientation sessions on May 22 nd- May 30th.
Benefits
There are many benefits for students who pursue an Orientation Leader position. Most importantly, OL’s gain
significant leadership experiences, develop professional relationships with faculty, staff, and students, and acquire
effective communication skills. Additional remunerations are $1500.00 total and free housing during the summer
training and June program dates. (YOU MUST LIVE ON CAMPUS) Meals are provided during the summer
Orientation sessions, as well as OL polos, and jacket. Khaki pants or shorts must be purchased by the OL.

• Applicants must participate in two group interviews either on (Nov.9th and 16th) or (Nov. 12th and 19th)
• Applicants must attend an individual interview and you will sign up for your interview at your first group
interview
• You will be notified of your selection through your campus email.
