Director’s Notes
Bringing The
Passion & Heart
To Les Misérables
An interview with Greg Stone—
Jean Valjean— about
Broadway and being home
at Village Theatre
BY CARLY VESTER
I
t’s the middle of September—cold
and blustery—and our small team
is at a rock center just outside the
small city of Preston. Greg Stone is
doing push-ups on top of a rock slab
structure as photographer Mark Kitaoka
tests for the correct lighting and the rest of
the photo shoot team holds their breath in
hopes it won’t start raining. Why push-ups?
Why a rock center? Greg, a Jean Valjean
veteran, is getting himself into character just
as we are setting the scene for the moving Les
Misérables photo on the front of your playbill.
Greg first took on the role of Jean Valjean as
an understudy with the touring production in
1997 when he was only 28 years old, becoming
the youngest actor ever to fill the shoes of
Valjean. Later that same year he performed on
Broadway at the Imperial Theatre for one week,
then took over the lead role in the touring
production. From there, he toured North
America for a year and a half, performing in
nearly every large house in the country.
Of all the stand-out memories while on
the Broadway tour, Greg says one of the best
ones was right here in Washington. “One of
my favorite memories was coming back to my
hometown of Seattle and playing at The 5th
Avenue with an audience loaded with college
friends from the University of Washington
and family.” He explains. “The crowd roared
so loudly during the curtain call that I was
just emotionally moved.”
Photos by Mark Kitaoka
So what’s it like being back in Washington
to reprise the role right here at Village
Theatre? Greg says it’s a unique experience for
the amount of detail and loving research put
into this particular show. “When I joined the
national tour, it had been running for years
and was a well-oiled machine. They just sort
of plugged the next actor into the machine
and turned it on. There was no ‘table work’—
just music and blocking rehearsals.” Under
the careful eyes of Director Steve Tomkins,
Assistant Director Kathryn Van Meter, and
Music Director R.J. Tancioco, the heart of this
show has truly been brought to the surface.
“Steve and Kathryn have been going through
every line with me,” Greg says. “They want to
discern the deepest understanding possible.”
Village Theatre also feels like home for
Greg, making this experience even more
meaningful. In 1993 he was seen for the first
time on our stage in the lead role of Jesus
in Jesus Christ Superstar. This role was what
he describes as his ‘break-out’ role, the one
that really started his career as an actor. He
later was seen as Pontius Pilate in Village’s
reincarnation of the show in our 2010-2011
Season, and has since graced our stage in the
Village Originals Festival.
Before becoming Valjean, Greg was also
seen as Brujon, Grantaire, The Bishop, and
Combeferre, though he says when he was
younger he wanted to play Enjolras. However,
we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him
as he is—Jean Valjean—on
our stage. As you get swept
away to the streets of Paris,
watching love and revolution
play out their battles, we
hope you will feel the heart
and passion that Greg,
our amazing cast, and our
talented crew have filled
this show with—from the
cold photo shoot at the rock
center back in September,
to the production you are
seeing today.
As I sit down to write my director’s notes,
it is 1:30 in the morning, and I have just
finished staging Valjean’s last confession.
It is two weeks until opening, and we will
do our first run though of the entire show
tomorrow, our last day in the rehearsal
room. Then we will head for the stage
where we will begin our next phase of this
amazing and somewhat overwhelming
project. We will begin staging the show
on Scott Fyfe’s intricately designed and
complex set, which manages to encompass the epic world of Jean Valjean and
bring it seamlessly to our stage. Later in
the week we will add Cynthia Savage’s detailed costumes, which number over 200,
all the while showcased by Tom Sturge’s
atmospheric lighting design.
After three weeks of rehearsal with
my spectacular cast, I am continually
humbled by the opportunity to bring Les
Misérables to life on Village Theatre’s
stage. Boublil and Schönberg’s adaptation of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece is
one of the most thrilling experiences in
musical theatre. We all feel a part of
something special, and everyone involved
wants desperately to do it right.
On the first day of rehearsal, I shared
with the cast a dream I had several years
ago. I had just been to see the National
Tour of Les Misérables with Village
Theatre alumni Greg Stone as a member
of the ensemble and the understudy of
Jean Valjean. This was his first major
break after leaving Seattle. Greg went on
play Valjean on Broadway, and my vision
was to someday mount a production of
Les Misérables with Greg Stone in the
title role at Village Theatre. Little did I
know, all of this would come to pass, and
here I am today with Greg and an entire
dream cast and production team to make
this a reality.
As we head into our final weeks of rehearsal I realize my confession—
I am forever grateful to my artistic team.
Thank you to R.J. Tancioco, Music Director; Kathryn Van Meter, Assistant Director; and Ryan Conlin, Stage Manager;
for dreaming the dream with me.
Enjoy,
Steve Tomkins

Be aware that talking, humming and tapping
feet during a performance is also disruptive to
the patrons around you. Before the overture
begins, please turn off playbill flashlights and
unwrap cough drops. In intimate auditoriums

actors can hear these seemingly small noises.
Please use moderation in applying perfume,

The Enduring Life
of Subscriptions
By Jamie Lilly
THE SHOWS YOU WANT TO SEE
The most important decision we make
each year is the selection of the new season.
When the process begins, there is only one
end-goal in mind: picking a season our
audiences will want to see. Each year, our
Subscribers get a survey asking which shows
they are interested in for the upcoming
season. These surveys are read, analyzed,
discussed, and shared among the artistic
staff and are the most important piece of the
puzzle in selecting our season. We’re looking
for a season that has just the right mix of
humor and drama, passion and excitement.
In other words, we’re not picking five
individual shows. We’re selecting a yearlong experience for our Subscribers to
enjoy together.
THE BEST DEAL IN TOWN
We genuinely want Subscribers to get the
best price on tickets. Season Tickets come
with a savings of 20% off the regular ticket
price, which translates to getting one of our
five shows each season for free. 4-Show and
3-show season tickets are also available later
in the year for people who want to Subscribe
after the first or second shows have passed.
SUBSCRIBER BENEFITS JUST FOR YOU
We put a lot of effort into honoring the
Subscriber Benefits offered to our Season
Ticket holders. For example, we have advance
“on sale dates” for each show to allow
Subscribers to purchase additional tickets
or exchange their seats before tickets go on
sale to the general public. We also try to help
Subscribers save more money by offering a
10% discount on additional single tickets or
gift vouchers.
IS YOUR GOOD KID
GETTING BAD GRADES?
WE CAN HELP.
GUARANTEED NIGHTS OUT WITH
UNEXPECTED FRIENDS
For over 36 years, our proven
method has helped thousands
of students improve skills,
confidence, and grades.
Many people have commented that Season
Tickets are essential for them simply because
they ensure that no show goes unseen. Our
lives can be so complicated that purchasing
and scheduling theatre events each year
can be easily forgotten. With season tickets,
audiences are able to take care of their full
year of entertainment with one simple
purchase. Plus, with our easy exchange
policies for Subscribers, you can always adjust
your tickets later if your schedule changes.

A PART OF VILLAGE THEATRE’S FAMILY
If you are a Season Ticket holder, please accept
our deep gratitude for your support and know
that you are truly valued. If you aren’t a Season
Ticket holder, please just take a moment to
consider the option and find out more—the
Box Office will be open during intermission if
you have questions. Three show Season Tickets
are now available for the remainder of our
season, which we would love to share with you,
along with many seasons to come.

Village Theatre Subscribers are part of a
community of people who love and appreciate
great theatre. Because they have the same
seats for each performance throughout the
year, they become connected to the people
around them. Many of our Subscribers have
become friends with the people they have
been sitting next to for years. They know
each other by name, and get to share their
theatre experience.

A
s years pass, many members
of the arts community believe
that times are changing and so
must we. Subscriptions are going
out of fashion and could soon become a
barely-remembered concept. Many potential
theories exist for this change, ranging from
the economic downturn to a fundamental
change in what audiences want. We at Village
Theatre believe that the Subscription model
has succeeded for so long because of one very
simple reason: it works. Particularly if you
allow it to work for you.

Sponsor Spotlights
Microsoft is pleased to sponsor Village Theatre’s
production of Les Misérables. Village Theatre is a
favorite among Microsoft’s employees and their families
for its engaging, energetic, and family-friendly productions.
Since Microsoft began in 1975, we have strived to make community involvement an
integral part of our business and corporate culture. With the majority of the company’s
employees and their families calling this region home, Microsoft believes it has both an
opportunity and a responsibility to support the work of local non-profits and to encourage
employee investment and volunteerism in the community. We believe that a thriving arts
scene, a network of human services providers, and a world-class education system are
critical to the vitality of our region.
We’re proud of our people and the enduring culture of giving that stems directly from
our mission as a company: to help people realize their full potential. Through partnerships
with organizations such as Village Theatre, we want to help create an environment where
the arts will thrive and be enjoyed for generations to come. On behalf of Microsoft, and our
employees in the Puget Sound area, we thank Village Theatre for enriching our community
and thank you for your patronage of local theatre. Enjoy!
The Issaquah/Sammamish Reporter Newspaper is proud
to sponsor Village Theatre’s production of Les Misérables.
Our mission as the local paper for the Issaquah and
Sammamish communities is to engage with our community
and support classic productions such as this brought to you by our local theatre. We hope
you enjoy this fabulous production!

Each year, Village Theatre’s Annual Fund supports
our Mainstage productions, the new works program
Village Originals, and our Youth Education and
Outreach programming which includes KIDSTAGE
classes, camps, and productions, and Pied Piper,
annually reaching over 63,000 students, schools,
and families throughout the Puget Sound. There
are many ways that you can support our efforts to
ensure that present and future audiences experience the musical excitement and artistic excellence
of Village Theatre.
INDIVIDUAL GIVING: It is through donations that
we are able to achieve the level of excellence
that you have come to expect. By donating to our
Annual Fund, you will play a part in every aspect
of Village Theatre, from the shows we produce, to
the performers, sets, and costumes. You will also
receive unique benefits to enhance your musical
theatre experience.
CORPORATE GIVING: Artistic excellence, unique
entertainment, fiscal responsibility—all attributes
of Village Theatre. By joining our team of corporate
partners, your business will receive prominent recognition, promotional opportunities, and entertainment
benefits that demonstrate your leadership. Corporate
sponsorships take several forms with opportunities
at many levels. These include the sponsorship of
performances and performance-related activities,
support for education and outreach programs, and
underwriting of special events
SPECIAL EVENTS: How to put the fun in fundraising.
Village Theatre has a full calendar of events and
intimate donor gatherings. Please save the dates:
Sing It Forward to benefit our Youth Education
Program and Scholarships was held on Saturday,
Oct. 19 at First Stage in Issaquah and will be held
on February 21-22, 2014 at Second Stage in Everett. On The Town, our annual black-tie gala auction,
takes place on Saturday, May 17, 2014.
VILLAGE ORIGINALS MEMBERSHIP: As a Village
Originals member, you will enjoy a dozen new musicals every year. Village Originals Members are the
ONLY people guaranteed admission to the Festival.
Your opinions matter as you are the “Beta Tester”
for every new musical we work on. “Research and
Development” has never been this much fun —
fascinating and funny, melodic and moving, and
endlessly surprising.
PLANNED GIVING: When considering a planned
gift, start by asking how you want to benefit Village
Theatre and how you’d like to benefit yourself and
others. While a planned gift can often be relatively
simple to arrange, you should always seek the
advice and guidance of your attorney, accountant,
or other appropriate advisor.
