PART I: Complete a thematic review chart for each of the periods 1-5. Use the guiding concept questions below to reflect on each theme for each period. You may use your new textbook, your USI notes, or reliable online sources to complete these charts.

Concept Questions:

How has the American national identity changed over time?

How have changes in markets, transportation, and technology affected American society?

How have changes in migration and population patterns afftected American life?

How have various groups sought to change the federal government’s role in

American political, social, and economic life?

How has US involvement in global conflicts set the stage for domestic social issues?

How did the institutions and values between the environment and Americans shape various groups in North America?

How have changes in moral, philosophical, and cultural values affected US history?

Part II: Read chapters 23-25 in American Pageant and take notes on each chapter. This is a college level textbook so it is normal to be challenged by the reading at first. Students always adjust to the reading level after the first few chapters. Take careful and comprehensive notes so you will be prepared for the start of the course. The notes will be considered a homework grade and there will be a test on all three chapters in September.

Part III: Using the knowledge you gained from your textbook AND reliable outside sources, write a 4-6 page fictional work about one of the following topics. I can be in the form of a fictional story or a series of letters or diary entries. Attach a bibliography to your project.

Pretend you are:

1.

A member of the Knights of Labor who experiences the hardships of factory work and the conflict between management and unions in the late 1800s. Also detail your involvement in the

Haymarket Square riot.

2.

Andrew Carnegie. Describe your early rise to wealth, your company, and its position in

America’s Second Industrial Revolution and your attitude toward your workers and the public.

3.

A sycophant who worked in William “Boss” Tweed’s Tammany Hall organization. Describe how the organization conducted itself, both the good and the bad, and describe its fall from power.

4.

Ulysses S. Grant. Describe your rise to military grandeur in the Civil War and your two terms as president of the United States. Assuming you would like history to look favorably upon you, justify your actions in the Civil War and the White House.

5.

A former slave in Alabama who becomes a sharecropper for his former master. Detail the good

(all who truly helped you experience freedom) and the bad (those who tried to keep you down) during Reconstruction.

6.

A Polish immigrant to the US in the late 19 th century. Discuss why you left your homeland and your experiences (good and bad) throughout your first year in America.

7.

Andrew Johnson. Describe your early life and how you came to be president. Detail the tug-ofwar you engaged in with the Radical Republicans over so many aspects of Reconstruction. Also, explain your point of view regarding the nation’s first impeachment. Convey how you want

America to remember you.
