Math Welcome Letter (Gr5) Hello and welcome to 5th grade! I hope you’ve enjoyed your vacation. My name is Salma El-Abbasy and I will be teaching your child Math. I would like to give you some information about myself. I am Egyptian. I grew up in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I graduated with a BS of Computer Science. I am a certified teacher and have been teaching Math for the past five years. I am currently enrolled and studying for my Masters of Education at the American Graduate School of Education. Together with my fellow colleagues we want your child to enjoy coming to school each and every day. We want to make your child’s classroom environment a pleasant one, filled with rich experiences, challenging projects, loads of achievements and lasting friendships. In order to accomplish this task, we feel it is particularly important to develop and maintain a year of classroom involvement with you. You will be the first to know whether your child is enjoying school, whether your child needs special attention in a specific subject or whether your child’s relationship with a friend is affecting his academic development. Our commitment to your child is genuine and our interaction is essential to your child’s education, both academically and behaviorally. I will be updating the blog (www.grade5gps.wordpress.com) to keep you informed with the latest material we will be covering. I will also be posting videos for your child to watch. It is important for us to build a strong relationship with each other for several reasons. Some of the most important ones are: To To To To To To To To motivate your child build self-esteem in your child reach common goals together work through difficulties that may arise see that your child enjoys the mental, physical and social activities see that your child learns and becomes responsible see that your child reaches personal fulfillment nurture I have complied this “Welcome” package to familiarize you with what to expect from your child this year. I have also included some helpful hints and guidelines. What will my child be studying? By the end this semester, students will have increased their skills with the four basic arithmetic operations applied to whole numbers and decimals. They will learn geometry, and will be able to calculate the areas for different geometric figures. We will not be covering the whole textbook. Some chapters may take longer to cover than others, since some chapters are more important. We will not be following the order of the textbook. We are following the California standards and will be using the textbook as we see fit to those standards. How will my child be graded? Evaluation of student work will be done with a variety of methods. I will use participation, homework, classwork, quizzes, tests and projects. Math needs practice, so math homework will be assigned to your child almost every night. We will be having a quiz every week. Those grades will be entered into the school’s eConnect program on a regular basis so that students and parents always have access to the student’s progress. What supplies will my child require? A4 notebook Squared notepad (0.5cm x 0.5cm) Pencil Eraser Ruler Protractor Glue We are about to begin a journey of learning, cooperation, and enjoyment. I am here to listen, learn, and help guide you through this year and help both parents and children feel welcomed. You and your children are the most important part of our new community.
