Research Assistant
The Division of Global Public Health from the UCSD Department of Medicine is dedicated
to:
 Increase awareness, skills and research capacity relating to global health issues
through educational activities directed to faculty, students, fellows and the
community
 Conduct high-caliber research on health-related issues and service utilization facing
populations in international settings, U.S. minorities and migrants to the U.S.
 Provide opportunities for students to experience clinical and research activities in
international settings and diverse communities
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator and project coordinator the
incumbent will provide support for a multisite research project focusing on injection drug
use initiation and prevention, as well as on related injection-related risks for HIV and other
infectious diseases among at-risk populations across North America and Europe
(Vancouver, San Diego, Tijuana, Paris, Marseille, and Bordeaux). The incumbent is expected
to work from the research study site, a minimum of 15 hours/week, which is located in La
Jolla. This position is designed for someone interested in quantitative research methods.
The student will contribute to this five-year research project, and will be encouraged to
integrate their work into their own thesis research. Relevant research experience on issues
related to HIV, marginalized communities, injection drug use or addiction is an asset.
Responsibilities may include;
 Assisting with study development and analysis;
 Systematic reviews of literature;
 Assisting with manuscript drafting;
 Assist with meeting preparation and presentations;
 Assist with IRB resubmissions, grant writing, and preparation of progress reports
required by funding agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Study will provide training and orientation for related activities but some experience in the
following is preferred;
 Master level experience in Health Sciences, Anthropology, Social/Behavioral
Sciences or related field;
 Quantitative research experience (e.g., course work, field work, etc.);
 Analytic training;
 Ability to attend weekly one-hour team meetings;
 Comfortable working with marginalized populations such as homeless, HIVseropositive, people who inject drugs, etc.;
 Strong written and verbal communication skills in English;
 Professionalism when communicating with participants and research staff;



Ability to adhere to confidentiality protocols;
Demonstrated experience working independently and meeting deadlines with
minimal supervision;
Fluency in Spanish or French is a valued asset so that s/he can communicate with
project staff and collaborators in Mexico and France. (optional)
SCHEDULE: Flexible hours, based on your school schedule. Have the ability to work from
home as long as you have a computer. Need a 15 hour commitment per week for a
minimum of 3 months; however, we can be flexible during school finals. Work will begin
ASAP.
COMPENSATION: Incumbent will be paid $11 per hour.
