This travel size version of the Perfect Palette color library contains everything the professional designer and architect will need for selecting our Perfect Palette colors in a smaller version. BACKGROUND Based on market research with numerous designers and architects as well as employees, we realized the need to have a travel size version of the Perfect Palette color library. Many firms do not have the space for the full size color library and a travel kit would allow for the Perfect Palette to still have a presence in these firms. Also, those designers and architects who travel quite a bit and need our colors on their jobsites have requested the color library in a smaller format. This travel kit is the result of all this research. KIT SPECIFICS The travel kits contain 9 fan decks that correspond with the 9 color library binders in a carry case for easy travel. It also includes room to place the Perfect Palette color album and fan deck if your customers have these tools. It also contains space for future expansion. Photographs are included below for your reference: 4 The quarterly news of the IFDA Arizona Chapter ifdaaz.com Partner News The AZ IFDA Congratulates Industry Partner, Paul Connolly of Sundrea Design Studio, a recipient of the 2012 International Landscape Design (APLD) Awards! Landscape designs were submitted from across the United States, and from several other countries. Criteria used to evaluate submissions included project impact, creativity, technical merit and planting design. Judges awarded seven Gold Awards and nine Merit Awards at this year’s competition. Paul received a Gold Award for his Saguaro Vista project in Tucson, Arizona as well as the Distinctively Better Plant Design Award, which is presented to the Designer who best demonstrates a mastery of planting design. The Saguaro Vista Design Concept The homeowner contacted me to create a landscape design for their new home. The pool and spa were already under construction, but other than that it was a clean slate. The property sits on a narrow ridge line that slopes drastically down to shallow canyons along the front and back of the house. I wanted to create a design that incorporates elements of the house and elements of the natural surroundings to seamlessly meld the house into the desert. The hardscape design incorporates patterns, shapes, colors, and textures from the architecture that reach out into the desert. Taking advantage of the elevation change, I designed retaining walls and imported soil to create a sort of negative-edge landscape. The softscape design incorporates patterns, shapes, colors, and textures from the desert that jump into the landscape and flow organically and informally through the rigid geometric contemporary architecture. This play and interaction between the natural and architectural elements allows the landscape to transition harmoniously from house to desert. Most of the plant selections are low shrubs and groundcovers, not exceeding 30” high, allowing unobstructed views. Native species of saguaros and ocotillos were added to provide vertical interest without blocking views. Before After Three cisterns collect and store a total of 5,100 gals of rainwater, which is then used to irrigate the landscape year-round. The tanks are hidden off the master bedroom patio, underneath the new landscape. An evapotranspiration irrigation controller measures temperature, humidity and wind; and automatically adjusts the watering schedule daily. The plant selection consists of mostly native species and some species from other deserts which are well A rain-sensor will shut the controller off during rain. adapted to our Sonoran Desert. Plants were carefully chosen and placed so their mature growth size would fit the space, greatly reducing maintenance. ifdaaz.com The quarterly news of the IFDA Arizona Chapter 5 Partner News Wallpaper - Its not what your mother remembers Far from chickens and teapots, today’s wallpaper is dressing the walls in the finest homes. The products that are on the market today add such sophistication to rooms - we have found that our customers are embracing this fast evolving trend. Most now feel that their rooms are not complete until the walls are dressed. In addition to the traditional material, materials such as wood, metal, mica, feathers, glass beads and many others are now being used to create sophisticated and amazing interiors. There is even a product that is a linen base that has a magnetic component which can be used in a variety of ways. We recently used it in a hobby room on one wall, and it was a huge success. We have found that people really have to feel and experience what paper brings to a room; we have used many different papers in the store to highlight the options. We have an extensive selection of wall coverings as well as install shots which helps the client realize the possibilities. Designers are always welcome to use our library and take samples. Stop by and see the new world of wallpaper. 6 The quarterly news of the IFDA Arizona Chapter ifdaaz.com Member News Is Pinterest Right For Your Business? By Charlene Kingston VP of Social Media/IFDA Board 2012 Pinterest is the social media tool getting a lot of attention these days. Many people are jumping into Pinterest without understanding how it works or how it can help your business. Over the last few months, I’ve conducted three free webinars on Pinterest to teach our chapter members and partners how to harness the power and popularity of Pinterest for your design business. I’m going to continue to offer these webinars in the future because I believe that Pinterest can really help you. Here’s the basics you need to know about Pinterest and some ideas for how to incorporate it into your design business. What Is Pinterest Like many social media tools, Pinterest is hard to explain. It’s a little bit like a mood board where you pull together samples and inspiration for a project. It’s also a little bit like the front of your fridge where you stick important things you know you will need later. Pinterest is a visual bookmarking tool that allows you to collect pictures you find online and from other Pinterest users. You add pictures to boards that you organize by topic. You can use any categories that make sense to you. Some people organize by color, others by room, others by technique or material, and still others by style. In other words, there are no rules. The process of adding a picture is called pinning. Each picture is called a pin. How People Use Pinterest People pin a wide range of things on Pinterest, but mostly, they pin things they would like to have or do. Pinterest is where they go to do practical planning or just dream about the future. For example: • Someone planning a wedding might have boards for rings, dresses, bridesmaid dresses, reception table ideas, and honeymoon destinations. • Someone dreaming of a kitchen remodel might have a board for cabinet ideas, islands, lighting, backsplash tiles, and appliances. • Someone dreaming of a backyard remodel might have a board for flowers, trees, patio surfaces, fire pits, paving choices, hot tubs, and furniture. But Pinterest is about more than just collecting pictures. Each picture, or pin, also has a link back to the website or blog where it came from. This mean that anyone using Pinterest can click on any photo to travel directly to the website or blog where the picture came from. Pinterest and Your Business Here’s where Pinterest gets useful for your business. You can pin photos from your own website and blog to a Pinterest board where you highlight your own work. Anyone who sees your pictures can repin them, meaning that they copy your pictures to their own boards. Now, even more people can see your photos, and if they want to learn more, they can click on them to visit your website or blog. Another way you can use Pinterest is to create idea boards for your clients and potential clients. It’s great when your clients show up with torn magazine pages so they can show you what they want. Why not use Pinterest to collect pictures for them? Send new clients to your Pinterest boards to get inspired by the beautiful photographs you have collected from other Pinterest users and your own research online. Pinterest is more than just hype. It can be a practical tool to help you highlight your work and inspire your clients. It can also drive traffic to your website and blog, and might even land you a new client. So what are you waiting for? Give Pinterest a test drive. ifdaaz.com The quarterly news of the IFDA Arizona Chapter 7 Tableau News The IFDA AZ President Karen Egan had a vision... A Teddy Bear display that was to be reminiscent of children’s building blocks but instead of letters, the blocks would have photos of the children of Ryan House on them! Ryan House provided photos and Loyd Parker started by designing the display on SketchUp. While looking in the phone book to locate cardboard boxes, he found Sound Packaging, custom box manufacturers! He spoke with Mark Rockers from Sound Packaging and, yes, they could accommodate our needs. Best of all, when Loyd mentioned that the project was to benefit Ryan House, Mark graciously donated the boxes! Not long after, a select group of IFDA members and partners gathered at Kim Grantham’s house and began painting the boxes. The paint was graciously donated by Dunn Edwards, another IFDA partner. Anxious to see the blocks assembled with the photos of the kids, the group quickly taped them together and stacked them. Karen’s vision was coming to life. Suzanne Whitaker was to bring the boxes to life using her talent & creative painting techniques. They were folded flat and loaded into her car so she could complete the vision in her studio. The result is amazing and a special thanks goes out to all who contributed their time, talents, products and money to make bring this vision to reality! Be sure and see them in person at Tableau Cinq, Saturday, October 13th at the Phoenician!
