Snow in Midsummer Paper

Choose from one of the following paper topics:
1. What is the literal and metaphorical significance of the title?
2. Explain and defend Dou E as the heroine and protagonist of the play. Include what she does to
deserve such a designation.
3. How does narration function in the play? Describe the effects of characters announcing what they are
doing and what they plan to do. What would be lost if most of the narrative elements were cut from the
production?
4. What problems does this play present for a Western audience? How might it be produced on the
stage?
