Debt Management
A quality graduate/professional education is an expensive endeavor. We recommend that you do the
following:


Minimize the amount of loan you need to borrow. Plan a conservative but realistic budget and
stick to it. It is tempting to borrow the maximum amount of loan available to you. Keep in mind
that you are committing a portion of your future income to loan repayment every time you
borrow.
Keep records and copies of all financial documents you complete and sign. These are your
official records. You are the best source of information about your loans and other financial
matters.

Student Expense Budget
The Financial Aid Office is required by federal regulations to establish student expense budgets for everyone receiving federal financial aid. These
budgets establish the maximum amount of aid a student can receive from all sources, including scholarships, grants, and federal, state and private
loans.
The following chart will help you determine approximately how much money you will need to meet your educational expenses for the academic year.
Many students have unrealistic expectations about the type of lifestyle they will be able to afford while attending school. A realistic examination of your
individual needs should be made to assure that your student lifestyle expectations are consistent with financial resources and obligations.

Term Bill
The Office of Student Accounting, Billing, and Cashiering provides access to your online term bill, processes refunds, administers payment plans,
coordinates exit counseling, and assists with issues that arise with your student account.
Registration at Rutgers is a 2-step process:
Step One: Pre-Register. You will receive a term bill based on your registration.
Step Two: Submit your term bill (each semester you attend even if the amount due is ‘zero’ and you expect a refund) to the Office of Student Accounting
Services. Login to finservices.rutgers.edu/otb/ to pay your bill and confirm your attendance. A copy of your award letter can be presented in person at
the Office of Student Accounting or faxed to (856) 225-6017.
Financial Aid Refunds
Once all required documents are received by the Financial Aid Office and you have confirmed your attendance, your financial aid will be posted to your
student account.
Students who have credit balances on their accounts can expect to receive a refund within the first two weeks of school. Since we cannot guarantee that
refunds will be available at the start of school, students are encouraged to prepare for the initial cost of books, supplies and incidentals. Information is
available at the Student Financial Services Office, Armitage Hall - 1st Floor, 311 North 5th Street, (856) 225-6021.
Students are encouraged to sign up for electronic direct deposit refunds for faster receipt of their financial aid refunds directly to their personal checking
or savings account. Direct Deposit is not an option for the summer. To enroll in RU ScholarRefund or for more information about how direct deposit
works, please visit studentabc.rutgers.edu
The first disbursement of Direct funds was scheduled for late August so many of you may already have a refund. Check with the Office of Student
Accounting, Armitage Hall, 1st Floor (856-225-6021).
Things that may affect your financial aid refund are:

changes in your enrollment (e.g. dropping a class) and/or

changes in your residency (e.g. becoming a NJ resident).

Students must make satisfactory progress toward their degree each year. Students who fail to maintain their class level standing will be
reviewed by the Associate Dean and the Director of Financial Aid each year for continued funding.
DO NOT SPEND YOUR ENTIRE REFUND IF ANY OF THE ABOVE APPLY TO YOU!
YOUR BUDGET MAY HAVE TO BE ADJUSTED AND YOU MAY NOT BE ENTITLED TO YOUR INITIAL REFUND AMOUNT.
