More than 15 years have passed since my brother and
I launched the first Factory Five. Back in 1995, kit cars were at
opposite ends of the spectrum. There were well-built but expensive replicas on one end, and poorly built, inexpensive “kit
cars” at the other end. This is still mostly true today,
except for a hot little replica made by a small group of wingnuts at a company called Factory Five Racing.
At the heart of this revolution is technology that enables us
to deliver a better product at a better price. That technology
is applied to our products by race car guys and engineers,
not salesmen. People who love what they do, who love the
customers they work for, and who are an active part of the
car building community.
The design had humble beginnings in a small shop in
Massachusetts in 1995. Since then, the Factory Five Roadster
has literally taken over the replica industry. Our cars have
won more car show awards, battled for more racing wins, and
received more accolades and recognition from the press than
any other company in the history of the industry. More importantly, Factory Five owners have become a true
community… the largest, most loyal, and most helpful
customer group anywhere.
Perhaps the biggest reason we are so dominant is that for
more than 15 years, we have consistently delivered on the

There are two ways to build your Factory Five Mk4 Roadster. You can use parts from a Mustang donor car (Base Kit) or you can
get all new parts from us (Complete Kit).
Base Kit - $12,990
The original Factory Five Mk1 Roadster was based on the innovation of using running gear from a single donor vehicle—namely,
the high performance Ford Mustang. The concept was, and still is, so simple. If you have our base kit and running gear parts
from a 1987-2004 Mustang GT donor car, you already have all the parts you need to build and drive your car!
Complete Kit - $19,990
Over the years we have expanded our chassis kit to include factory-new parts as well. Our Mk4 complete kit delivers to you…
well, a complete kit. The only things you’ll need are your own engine/transmission/rear end assembly, wheels/tires, and paint.
Either way you choose to build your Factory Five Roadster, we have engineered the kit to make the process of building your dream as
simple and straightforward as possible. The completed car will look like a factory-new 1965 roadster, but will drive like a modern car.

Mk4 Frame and Chassis
Authentic Design, Race-Proven Engineering
You want to compare kits? Start with the frame. The artistry, strength, and complexity of the Factory Five Mk4
frame is reason enough to stop looking right here. The beauty of our design is accentuated by the fact that it is
stronger and more rigid than you’ll realistically need.
We use an authentic 4” round tube design. We feel strongly that a quality replica should have a period correct,
4” round tube frame, just like the original legend. The tubular ladder-style frames used in the original 1960s AC
cars are more than beautiful, they are representative of a period of automotive design that is legendary. We
chose to use this style of frame despite the manufacturing difficulty and cost, since a huge part of a quality
replica is its faithfulness to the spirit of the original cars.
While originality is very important, if the frame doesn’t perform, what good is it? We kept the design style, but
used CAD technology, better materials, and more consistent manufacturing methods to make it more than twice
as strong.
Since 1995, the Factory Five Roadster frame has become known for its strength and ability to protect its
occupants. With over 800 welds and hundreds of individual pieces of steel, the Mk4 frame is both engineering
excellence and functional automotive art. The frame is a completely welded
assembly and requires no welding or cutting.
When you see Factory Five cars winning national races or lifting the tires
clear off the ground, check out the “straight-as-an-arrow” frame quietly
doing its job. There is no finer replica frame. Period.

For decades, “kit car” meant missing parts, shoddy workmanship, horrible chopper-gun
fiberglass, and a bundle of parts destined to gather dust in the garage with no realistic
hope of getting put together. If that’s how you define a kit car – and many people do –
then a Factory Five needs a different label, as it comes complete as advertised, and if
you can’t finish it in a year or so... well, you’re just not trying.
It’s pretty obvious that Factory Five is in another league, rising far above the stigma that
has befallen kit cars since those dark days of the VW bug-based trash that belittled the
genre. It really doesn’t get much easier, considering you’re building a car from scratch.
Understand that you have to know your way around a wrench and a rivet gun before
taking on a project of this sort, but you also don’t need to be a NASCAR Nextel Cuplevel fabricator.
The Factory Five Roadster... is a brutal handful in the best possible way.
We were shocked at how tight the FFR car is. We went in expecting the equivalent of a
home-built, which means rattletrap that’s painful to drive and twitchy at speed. But the
FFR doesn’t rattle, it doesn’t shake, it’s smooth as a Fox-body Mustang, and it’s fast.
Very fast.
An entire day spent driving several radically different versions of FFR cars, from factory
demos to pure home-builts, solidified the opinion that these are real cars, not toys. If
you’ve thought about building an FFR yourself, don’t be afraid... the end product is a
brutal little road rocket that’s enormous fun to drive.

A Great Car Starts with a Great Frame
Today’s fourth-generation Mk4 Roadster frame has benefited from over 15 years of refinement and development. It is both
lightweight (321 lbs) and strong. We use high quality precision cut plate steel with 1010 and 1020 DOM tubing. The Mk4
frame stands head and shoulders above the original 1965 legend thanks to better tools, better materials, and modern
technology.
Hood, doors and
trunk are all hinged
to the structural frame,
not the fiberglass body.
The dash/cowl hoop is 0.10” thick wall steel,
welded to the frame as part of the cockpit surround cage. Many fiberglass bucket replicas
have a flimsy dash hoop bolted to the floor.

The 4” round tube main rails are made from higher quality steel and are
thicker than the original frames: 0.120” wall DOM (drawn over mandrel)

Mk4 Aluminum Panels

A traditional kit car may use a fiberglass tub and body bolted to a cheap platform
frame, but you won’t find modern streetcars or racecars built that way. Even vintage
1960s cars like the original ACs, Ferraris and GT-40s used proven racecar construction
methods of tubular frames and riveted/bonded aluminum panels.
The aluminum chassis panels found in our Mk4 kits combine this traditional quality
with the latest CAD/CAM technologies and superior construction methods.
The entire cockpit, trunk and engine bay of the Factory Five Mk4 is precision laser-cut
6061-T6 aluminum, without any fiberglass structural items. Underneath these
aluminum panels, a matrix of steel tubing provides support surfaces for a close,
tight-fitting installation.
Why 6061-T6 aluminum? Conventional 4000-series aluminum is easier to bend
and form, but not as strong in tension. We invested in learning how to correctly form
the 6061-T6 to get the benefit of increased strength for the same weight.
Underneath our hand-laid fiberglass composite
body are almost 40 individual aluminum panels
attached to our elegant tubular steel frame.
The strong foundation of our world-class frame combined with our aluminum
chassis panels bonded and riveted to perimeter frame tubing represents just
one of the major design and functional differences between the Mk4 and
almost every other replica sold today.
Since 1995 we’ve built and shipped more than
8,000 body shells, over 30,000 body panels, and
built over 100 complex molds and tools.

Mk4 Composite Body
Period-Correct Shape, Made Correct. Period.
The body shape of the Factory Five Mk4 is extremely accurate benefitting from, and a direct descendent of two original cars, CSX 3042 and the late Dick Smith’s famous #198,
CSX 3035.
The composite body is a one-piece hand-laid vinylester part that is a precise replica of
the original, and engineered to complement the strong steel and aluminum chassis
which provides structural support.
The hood, doors and trunk have molded liners and come complete with hinges
and pre-drilled mounting holes. The body shell is laminated to a thickness of 3/16”
all around, with a .015” red gel coat outer finish.

We use an Eastman M9000 CNC cloth-cutting
machine to ensure consistency of all composite
fabrics and patterns.
Mk4 body shells are shipped pre-assembled to the frame. The parts are unfinished
(taken right out of the mold and requiring bodywork). Our kit uses router trimmed
panels instead of molded edges. This eliminates air voids on tight radius areas and
enables us to make close fits around all hood, door and trunk panels.

Mk4 Front Suspension & Brakes
The ugly truth is that most kits, hot rods and customs handle terribly. The artistry
and strength of the Factory Five Roadster chassis would be a waste without an equally
well-designed suspension. Computer simulations and hundreds of hours on the
track under the most extreme conditions have helped our engineers design a
world-class suspension that simply works great.
Front Suspension Base Kit
• Fully independent front suspension utilizing unequal length upper and
lower a-arms
• High-end Koni mono-tube adjustable coil-over rod-end shocks
• Uses donor Mustang front lower arms, spindles, and brakes

Rear end and brakes can be used from a Mustang donor car. We also

and in the correct sizes/backspaces to work with our car.

Mk4 Rear Suspensions
The Mk4 Roadster Chassis Kit is delivered ready to accept bolt-on rear suspension components in one of three (3) rear suspension configurations:
1. Four Link Rear Suspension
Our standard 4-link suspension comes with custom anti-squat geometry and
ready to accept Ford Mustang 8.8” solid axle donor rear suspension parts. About
half of FFR Roadster kits are shipped with the affordable standard
4-link rear suspension, which is a great performance street car suspension.

2. Three Link Rear Suspension
The upgraded 3-link rear suspension is standard in Mk4 complete kits and all
FFR Challenge Series cars. It includes the frame brackets, panhard rod, control
arms, coil-over shocks and springs. Recognized as a proven and worthy upgrade
to the standard Mustang 4-link, this suspension eliminates any bind and provides an amazingly predictable ride at the track or on the street.
3. Independent Rear Suspension
Our Independent Rear Suspension upgrade is designed for those looking for the
most comfort and authenticity, and can be added to either the base or the complete kit. It includes a welded-in cage, upper and lower tubular control arms,
high-end Koni mono-tube rod-end coil-over shocks (matched to the fronts), and
custom assembled axles and CV joints. The IRS option for the Mk4 kit requires
the 8.8” center section (from a 1989-1997 Ford Thunderbird), rear spindles,
and brakes.

With a power-to-weight ratio that can be as low as 3.5 pounds
per horsepower, the Mk4 Roadster is a match for any sports car
made today. Zero-to-sixty acceleration times in the three second
range, and 10-second 1/4 mile passes are not uncommon. Factory Five customer Steve Berg has run his own FFR Roadster down
the drag strip at an amazing 9.13 seconds at 154 MPH! With a
well-built, modestly powered FFR Roadster, you will simply own
any stoplight.
When it comes to road holding, our cars fare equally well. FFR
cars have routinely run in the 1.00 to 1.05 range in skid pad
tests on street tires. That means your FFR turns as fast as it falls
through the air! On a track or a twisty section of road you will
hold a line that others in lesser cars (like a Porsche 911, 0.91G)
will not be able to hold. These numbers are borne out in the real
world by the staggering number of autocross and road racing
wins FFR customers have racked up over the years.
At a vehicle weight about 2,200 pounds, braking is also
impressive with the stock Mustang GT brakes.

How Difficult is it to Build?
Engineered to be Built
The Factory Five Mk4 Roadster was engineered to be built at home using ordinary tools.
But don’t take our word for it. Factory Five Racing is the only replica maker that offers a
comprehensive 3-day build school. You can build a Mk4 roadster with 12 classmates
under the direct instruction of a professional mechanic/instructor.
Regardless of skill level, starting with a well-engineered kit is most of the battle.
The Factory Five kit is designed to be put together by a person at home in his or
her own garage. Our experience leading the component car industry—with over
7,000 kits built and shipped as of 2010—means that our roadster goes together
the way it’s supposed to.
