Annual Report 2013-14 School Year A letter from our Board President I’ve heard Waldorf Education referred to as ‘new age’, ‘contemporary’ and ‘innovative’. My sense is that these terms were intended to be compliments for an education that is meeting the needs of today’s children quite well. But for me the beauty in our education isn’t that it evolves to meet the latest trend in educational research, it’s that the teachings are nearly 100 years old and have been meeting the needs of children for generations, despite how times change. It seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same however; for what it takes to feed our hands, head and heart is the same today as it was a century ago – and recent research appears to be confirming it. For example this summer NPR reported on a study by a researcher at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, which concludes that “play is what prepares a young brain for life, love and even schoolwork.” So that awesome free play you see in the Kindergarten isn’t just fun, its building a foundation for holistic child development. This last spring Reuters Health reported that psychology researchers from Iowa State University “found that parents restricting how much screen time kids watch, restricting what they watch and talking about the shows was linked to more sleep, better school performance and less aggression among kids.” This isn’t ‘new age’ as much as it is simply rediscovering what we knew to be true and nourishing generations ago. Waldorf Education is truly remarkable and it takes a commitment from everyone to bring it to life. We’ve been fortunate at WSRF with an incredible faculty and staff, and an amazing community of volunteers and supporters. This last year we continued to support our mission by adopting, and implementing many of the tasks in our 3rd five-year strategic plan; including such achievements as strengthening our faculty and programs by 30%, expanding our development efforts, and adding the Sageflower pre-school class. So I’m excited and grateful to start another year in which our children can thrive from such a wonderful education and school community. Thank you for all you do and the work that is yet to be done. Guided by the Pedagogical Plan and the impulse to better support our faculty, the Board of Trustees granted the first pay raise in five years. The decision to prioritize the faculty’s wellbeing translated into thriving enrollment, and our student body leaped from 137 to 158, a trend that has continued into the 2014/15 school year. Our faculty met the year with vibrancy and our campus was imbued with a renewed sense of spirit and purpose. Taking up the Board’s challenge to better support the faculty, we introduced a new class schedule, with extended periods and lessened transition times, requiring fewer duties of faculty. This has enabled a deepening of programs, greater focus and a healthier rhythm to the days and weeks. Additionally, Administrative Council was able to more fully live into our roles, and for the first full year all three administrators were present. Congratulations to the Class of 2014 8TH GRADE PROJECTS & MENTORS Emily “Emmy” Bauer Surfboard Design; Mentors: Ryan Zeller & Nelson Oldham Parent Council hosted a wealth of enrichment opportunities for our parents, including a lecture series, artistic workshops, book studies, and a film presentation. Parent Council’s Honey Bee Café created a warm space for parents to relax and socialize after Friday Assembly, and Mayfaire was simplified to allow parents to enjoy the event with their children, while broadening the festival into an outreach event. Natasha Brand American Sign Language; Mentors: Jess Wiley & Christi Scroggs Unfortunately, the year also brought shock and sadness with the passing of founding parent and benefactor Doug Sheffer, and of parent Stuart Oksenhorn. We came together as a community, first in grief and but then in celebration, as we honored the lives of our friends. Their gifts live on through WSRF, and their spirits continue to strengthen our work. Demian Detweiler Grafting; Mentor: John Ray Gardner & Gerome Osentoski The year culminated with outstanding presentations, including the 8th grade projects, class play, a rousing eurythmy performance, the excitement of class trips and a memorable graduation event. In the greater valley and nation, WSRF has become recognized a destination school – we are blessed to be able to offer the breadth of Waldorf curriculum in a rural setting, and enjoy a wealth of cultural and recreational opportunities. The Roaring Fork Valley offers so much to our families, and an investment in Waldorf Education is a gift that bears fruit for a lifetime. The Administrative Council is grateful to all the supporters of our school. Your generosity makes our work possible; each and every one of us is touched by the excellence, warmth, and depth of spirit that is the Waldorf School on the Roaring Fork. Thank you for your support. Alumni parent, dedicated volunteer, and unflagging champion of Waldorf education, Doug carried a bright vision of a school community unfettered by pessimism or doubt. His family’s generosity drove the creation of many of the programs we now take for granted, and not a student has passed - or will pass - through our doors that hasn’t benefited from his fiery enthusiasm. Doug’s legacy lives on in the generous donations made in his name, and in the spirit-light our students carry out into the world. Doug’s exacting standards, warmth and seemingly boundless energy, will serve as both a gift and a standard to be met, for many years to come. We’d like to say THANK YOU A healthy and full community life at WSRF is one of our most treasured assets. It is in the participation and support of dedicated parents and friends with whom we are able to experience the essence of a Waldorf community. Our community has talented, enthusiastic, and loving parents, grandparents, alumni, and alumni parents who volunteer their work and wisdom in a host of ways to support the operations of the school.
