Message from the President
Message from the President
Dear Friends,
When we counted our blessings some of the things we were thankful for:
The Arab Spring that burst upon our Region in 2012, degenerated into a long winter of discontent
• Our hard-working, caring, dedicated and highly effective staff of Child Life Specialists and Play
throughout 2013. The massive surge for change bypassed Kuwait and most of the Gulf, leaving
Leaders in the hospitals, and Administrative Team in the KACCH office who have worked together
them relatively unscathed. Ripples were felt however, causing unease and urging reflection and a
recounting of our blessings. Within KACCH this resulted in a complete restructuring of our staff’s
to support 46,535 sick children and their families throughout the year 2013.
• The doctors, nurses and other health care professionals who welcome our Child Life Specialists
and Play Leaders as integral members of the team on the paediatric wards of our hospitals.
professional responsibilities, supervision, remunerations and career pathways, and an examination
• The generous, insightful, loyal and supportive Sponsors of the Child Life Programmes whose
of our duties as Board Members and Managers. Our primary duty as always was to ensure the welfare
financial contributions have enabled the establishment of the Child Life profession in Kuwait and
of the children and their families in our hospitals and to empower the KACCH staff to continue the
made the changes in staff remuneration and consequently playroom opening hours possible.
development and delivery of the highest standards of psychosocial care.
On reflection, we have introduced some new measures such as:
• Increased salaries of all staff to compensate for high increases in the cost of living in Kuwait over
the last few years and to ensure the salary ranges compared favourably with those of similar
healthcare professionals.
• Extended the hours that hospital playrooms and KACCH services are available to support children
and their families in each hospital, including afternoon and weekend sessions.
• Reviewed the annual assessment process and documentation to help each member of staff recognise their strengths and weaknesses and to set goals for future achievements.
• Introduced a new on-line educational course that enabled our Play Leaders to register and 6 work towards an internationally recognised certificate in child development.
• The contributions from individuals, schools, banks and businesses who bring joy to sick children’s
lives with entertainment, parties, granting wishes and countless other ways to support the KACCH
programmes.
• The committed and caring Volunteers who bring a breath of fresh ideas and normality to the
hospital wards.
• The dedicated, loyal, generous and committed Members of the KACCH Board of Trustees and
Executive Committee who give their precious time and vast experience to guide and support us
and to ensure we continue to meet our obligations and duty of care with good governance.
Yes, it’s the people out there, the people and community of KUWAIT that we should really be thankful
for because its those people, - its YOU who have made a difference in the lives of children and their
families in hospital. THANK YOU!

KACCH Vision
Child Life Programmes
Our Mission:
Our Child Life Programmes:
Kuwait Association for the Care of Children in Hospital (KACCH) advocates for the provision of childfriendly and family-centred facilities on the paediatric wards and other areas of hospitals where
children are treated in order to reduce the adverse effects of hospitalisation on children and their
families.
KACCH operates Child Life programmes in six
government hospitals across Kuwait. They
are organised by Child Life Specialists who
assess the emotional and developmental
needs of the children in their hospitals and
plan interventions using play materials to meet
their individual requirements. They encourage
parents to understand their children’s illnesses
and treatments and to be involved in their care,
and give emotional support to the child and
family by allowing them to express their feelings
in a safe and supportive environment.
Our Philosophy:
We believe in upholding the rights of the child as declared in the
UN charter of 1989, to which Kuwait is a signatory and support the
recent declaration of the WHO that palliative care is a basic human
right for all children with life-shortening conditions. These include
the right of every child to receive expert health care delivered,
whenever possible, by paediatric trained physicians and nurses,
within family-centred, child-friendly facilities.
Our Objectives:
• To minimise the stressful impact of hospitalisation and illness on
the child and family in hospital.
• To facilitate optimal growth and development of the child.
• To prepare children and families for their health care experiences.
• To communicate effectively with other members of the health care team.
• To ensure the continuity and development of the Child Life programme within health care settings
in Kuwait.
• To share expertise and co-operate with international and regional organisations.
• To recognise when hospital is not the optimum health care setting for the child and to advocate 8 for the provision of paediatric palliative care at home or in a children’s hospice, so that parents
can choose how and where their child with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions is treated.
other negative feelings and organise parties
and special events to maintain the children’s
contact with home, school and the community.
Volunteers give their valuable time and
skills to assist the Play Leaders by reading
stories and playing games with children in
the hospital playrooms, and by helping to
organise entertainment and parties to celebrate
events throughout the year.
The Child Life programme is supported by
Play Leaders who provide developmentally
appropriate play to normalise the environment
for children attending hospital. They maintain
a safe child-focused environment where play
occurs naturally, organise daily play, art and
craft activities in the hospital playroom or at
the child’s bedside; provide activities to help
children reach developmental goals; help
children master and cope with anxieties and

About Al-Amiri Hospital
Al-Amiri Hospital is one of the oldest hospitals in
Kuwait and is located in Kuwait City south of the
Kuwait Bay district. It was built in 1949 and renewed
in 1985. The hospital has been serving children and
adults since that time. In February 2010 the Sabah AlAhmed Cardiac Centre was opened at Al-Amiri.

Conditions Treated
Al-Amiri Hospital is a general hospital with surgical, medical, cardiac, renal, gastroentrolgy,

children with acute and chronic medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, and gastric 12
disorders.

playroom offers children an unstructured
atmosphere where they can express themselves
and just have fun. We know that hospitalisation
can be a frightening prospect for a child and
parent which is why we created a calm, engaging
environment that nourishes and soothes them.

who may share similar experiences. In addition,
it is a place where children may choose from an
array of activities: painting, colouring, games,
puzzles, and craft projects, music, making
friends, or sitting and watching others play.
Providing a wide variety of opportunities for play and activities allows young children the
chance to relieve stress, boost morale, and heal faster while in the hospital. Sharing joy, laughter,
and fun with others promotes bonding and strengthens a sense of community. We develop

empathy, compassion, trust, and the capacity for intimacy through normal play.

About NBK
Hospital
Children’s
KACCH services first began in 1996 in the Sabah Health
Region, south west of Kuwait City, on the haematology
ward at Al-Sabah Paediatric Hospital with one of the first
Child Life Specialist graduates. In April 2000 these patients
CLS giving post procedure care
were transferred to the newly built NBK Children’s Hospital
which was donated by the National Bank of Kuwait (NBK)
for children with leukaemia and other blood disorders.

Conditions Treated
20
The hospital receives children with leukaemia, thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia, haemolytic anaemia, bone marrow failure and other bleeding disorders together with solid tumours.
21
Case History
A 3 years old girl newly diagnosed with leukaemia was transferred to the NBK
Hospital to commence treatment. The girl was scared from the hospital staff
and any strange person that would approach her because she had experienced
a lot of blood tests during her previous hospitalisation and was due to undergo
invasive and unfamiliar procedures such as lumbar puncture and a bone
marrow biopsy as a part of her treatment. In-order to receive her induction
chemo-therapy, the young girl had to be prepared for her central-line by the
Child Life Specialist.
Special Project
By recording their journey through their chemotherapy treatment and highlighting the special
moments that are meaningful, the children had a beautiful keepsake to document their
treatment in this picture album guided by the KACCH team.
Special thanks to Asya M Jassim for donating the albums.
Her parents were worried, tense, had lots of questions regarding
her illness because they had no idea about their daughter’s
diagnosis. From day one the KACCH team worked closely with the
girl and her family to overcome this painful experience focusing
on building a strong relationship with her and her family by
inviting them to the playroom to participate in fun and messy
play activities supported with medical play.
She loved taking the doctor’s role through play which helped her to
express her feelings, understand what was happening to her and regain
a sense of control. Her relationship with the medical staff improved
and she started to adapt to the hospital environment. She even asked
her Mother to do her birthday celebration at the hospital which the
KACCH team facilitated in the playroom. The Child Life Specialist spent
considerable time with the Mother helping her to express her feelings
and cope with her fears and worries during this intense period. After the emotional support
2
2 that her Mother received she became stronger and supportive to other Mothers
that were going through the same experience and became a role model for them.

S/N : Rejani R. Nair, Staff Nurse -
Dear Kacch Team,
We are really thankful to you for your support. You all are doing
a great job. It is our fortune that we have you in NBK hospital to
support the parent always.
There were so many incidence when we were depressed but it
was you who brought smile to our face. I really appreciate the way
you deal with all the children and do your best to make them happy
with your games which you play with them, or art and craft or any
party where you make sure that each and every child participate.
I remember when first time my child went to OT for ITMX and I
was crying and praying for him outside the OT and the way the
CLS made me comfortable. I can never forget that day and her
support. Thank you so much KACCH team for your support and be
always there for us.
Play leaders are such nice ladies that they even come to the room
when my son was not in the condition to go out and play and made
sure that he is entertained so they were providing games in the
room and used to play with him. Thank you so much for your efforts.
We love the way Kacch organize parties for kids and entertain kids
and never made them feel that they r sick or fighting against life
threatening disease.
You all are doing a wonderful job and we really appreciate that.
Keep it up KACCH!!! We love you all.
Regards
Sunita Arora (Vedant Oberoi's Mother)
I’m the mother of Hala Hani. This 3 years old Egyptian girl was
admitted to NBK hospital as Acute Lymphocytic leukemia (ALL).
From the 1st moment we admitted KACCH team offered their
support to me & my child. They make our experience at the hospital
a positive one. They help us relieve tension, express concerns,
fears, and feel more in control about our hospital experience.
HALA knows that KACCH playroom is a place for fun, safe, and
social interaction. Every time she goes their she’s enjoying activities
and entertainment, as well as a wide variety of books, toys and
crafts. She sleeps & dreams of parties that she will attend next
day..!!! I want to say thank you for MISS RANA, she is making a
big effort with all mothers to explain a diagnosis or treatment in
easy words to understand and always offer her support during and
after a medical procedure. Thanks M/S INAAM because even if
Hala couldn’t go out from her room in the case of high fever, low
immunity , etc. she brings the toys & games to her room and always
follow up her case until she gets well. Last but not least thanks
M/S AMINA for shifting Hala’s interest on I pad to coloring,
cooking & now she is in love with solving puzzles.
“Thank You” is not enough for you. You are not helping Hala to
forget her pain, you are helping All our family to fight cancer with
big inner faith that she will get well. And who knows, maybe she

will grow up & be one of KACCH team.

for major surgeries one of which was performing a colostomy.
Due to his weak condition and inability to eat, he was receiving TPN (Total Paraenteral Nutrition)

methods using blowing techniques with bubbles, balloons and peak flow meter were also used.
Our CLS through the collaboration with the Medical Team at Ibn Sina ensured delivery of the
necessary information to the Mother to clarify his continuous changing health condition, also
supporting her psychosocially to cope with her current difficult situation.
With his ever improving condition he was finally able to join other children in the KACCH playroom
for group play and other fun activities and now enjoys being the boss of Ibn Sina’s playroom as
illustrated in the photographs on the opposite page.
Currently he is attending the Out-Patient Department for follow up with the multi- disciplinary team.

In the beginning the girl was rather disinterested, however,
when the preparation reached a point that touched her feelings,
she opened up and started to express her emotions and fears.
She chose the very sad face to put on the doll. The CLS repeated
the explanation of how the amputation would impact her body
and mobility. The girl’s Mother was watching quietly without
interrupting the preparation. When the CLS reached the part

of how she would feel after the surgery, the girl chose the face that expresses
severe pain without talking; she just pointed at it, grabbed it and put it on the doll’s face.

Day Case Centre
In 2013 the opening of the Day Case Centre provided vital support to families as it is open 24/7.
This allows school children to come for their treatment in the afternoons or over the weekends,
enabling them to continue their studies without interruption. The Day Case service helps the
patients and their families psychologically, with less time away from home and is less traumatic
for the child and family. The informal atmosphere of the Day Case Centre greatly benefits all
concerned.
Before this facility was opened, children booked for an MRI or CT scan had to be admitted
and sent from the ward to the Radiology Department. This put a considerable drain on the
Casualty Department, nursing staff and the ward. Now these children come from the Casualty
Department, register their name in the Day Case, receive their sedation and are directly sent
to the Radiology Department. Returning to the Day Case, they wait under observation for one
60
hour before they are discharged.

Volunteers
Volunteers 2013
Kuwait Association for the Care of Children in Hospital (KACCH) is
a voluntary organisation, founded and managed by volunteers.
Volunteers provide the back bone of the organisation and
work closely together with KACCH teams in all hospitals. All
of our volunteers bring with them a commitment to use their
talents, experience and enthusiasm together with a smile which
contributes a sense of normalcy to the hospital environment.
The process of becoming a KACCH
volunteer is simple. Anyone interested
can go to our website (www.kacch.org)
and fill in the online application form.
The candidate will be contacted within a
week for the next orientation. Volunteers
are then offered a placement in one of
our six play programmes depending on
availability, suitability and vacancies in the
programme.
67
Volunteer Orientations
Regular orientations to recruit volunteers
are held on a monthly basis. As well as these
orientations special sessions are organised
outside KACCH premises and this year we had
orientations at the American Army base, the
Canadian Bilingual School, Bayan Bilingual
School, American School of Kuwait and the
American Academy for Girls.
KACCH also held awareness sessions at the
American University of Kuwait and American
Women’s League. These orientations provided
several long-term volunteers that support the
back-bone of our programmes.
Over the past year US military volunteers
came to help us every Thursday in two of
our programmes at Razi and NBK hospitals,
developing relations with the children. Adding
colour to the wards by painting decorative
celing tiles and offering us much needed office 68
support.
Dedicated hardwork never to be forgotten...
Thank you to all the US Military volunteers, especially
4th Battalion 42nd Field Artillery Regiment & 1st Battallion 22nd Infantry Regiment.

SOOR Fuel Marketing firm receives
Environmental Excellence Certification
KUWAIT CITY, Oct 11: SOOR Fuel
Marketing Company, specialized in the construction, operation and maintenance of fuel
supplying stations was recently awarded the
Environmental Excellence Certification
from the Environment Protection Society
represented by the Dr Mohammed Daoud
Al-Ahmad.
As part of its responsibility towards the
community and its commitment to environmental protection, the company has
embarked upon a new recycling program
since February 2013 in all its offices, in
addition to its adoption of international environmental standards at all its stations and
operation centres.
This certification was awarded to the company in recognition of its completion of the
first level of the recycling program. To
accomplish its mission, the company started
by raising employee awareness of the recycling concept and organizing informative
presentations aimed at encouraging them to
participate in this daily routine.
In this context, the company conveniently
placed recycling bins to collect and sort
paper, plastic, and metal throughout the hallways, and launched a solid waste reduction
program by adopting electronic handling and
archiving, dramatically reducing paper consumption.
Lubna our Senior Child Life Specialist received a partial scholarship from the Child
Life Council to attend their annual conference in Denver Colorado USA while
Senior Child Life Specialist Hadia received a local sponsorship
Thank you to the Child Life Council and to Sheikha Intisar Al-Sabah
for your continued support

As part of this initiative, major priorities were set for the purchase of recycled
equipment and materials and for the
reduction of electricity consumption by
installing motion sensors in all the offices,
hallways and facilities to avoid unnecessary energy usage when rooms and hallways are empty. The company also adopted a special program aimed at preserving
water by placing sensors to manage and
control the wastage of water during the
washing process.
According to SOOR Fuel Marketing
Company, the certification reflects its dedication to raising health and safety management standards in Kuwait, and proves its
continuous dedication to participating in
programs and activities emphasizing the
importance of environmental initiatives in
Kuwait and around the world.
Therefore, the company is today working
on pursuing these environmental initiatives
by applying the recycling program in all its
stations around Kuwait and by fulfilling the
environmental and health conditions on a
larger scale in order to receive the

Bayt Abdullah Children’s Hospice - 2013
2013 saw Bayt Abdullah Children’s Hospice become fully operational, with referrals coming in
from the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health hospitals. We were able to offer our various services, such as
homecare, inpatient, short respite breaks and day-care clinics in conjunction with an outreach
service to those children and families. This allowed us to oversee approximately 300 persons
inclusive of the family members. Additionally, as per our mission, our services were extended to
those bereaved families through the establishment of a bereavement service.
2013 was also a year in which we created a number of strategic alliances to set up annual events
with local entities for the benefit of our children and their families, such as:
Bayt Abdullah
Children’s
Hospice
2013
•
The National Bank of Kuwait’s Yearly “Carnival”.
•
The Gulf Bank’s Yearly “Baking Day”.
•
•
The Habchi & Chalhoub Yearly “Mother’s Day Celebration”.
•
The One World Yearly Theatre Workshop which this year was “Chronicles of Narnia”.
The Phoenician Riders’ “Meet & Greet”.
As education plays an integral part of the Bayt Abdullah philosophy, 2013 saw the hosting of
the Third Annual “Introduction to Paediatric Palliative Care” for the Medical Students at Kuwait
University. In addition to hosting for a third year, a training and information course for the
Nursing Students from the Public Authority for Applied Education & Training.
