The following is from “Nuestra Parroquia”
The readings and their message
Acts 12:1-11
In the first persecution of the
church in Jerusalem, all the
followers of Christ were scattered,
except for the apostles. The
repression fell on the group of
Hellenists, not on the Hebrews. But
now we are before the persecution
of the Hebrews and James is the
first victim. Why does this happen
now, against the Jews, followers of Jesus but still faithful to the
law and the temple? It was possibly a reaction to the visit of
Barnabas and Saul who bring resources from the Church of
Antioch in solidarity with that of Jerusalem. They are resources
that are perceived as being from the Gentiles, impure people. In
addition, the conversion of the Roman centurion, Cornelius, had
taken place shortly before. All this could have infuriated the
Jewish people in Jerusalem. On the other hand, Herod Agrippa
was a pro-Roman king who sought to appease the people on
the one hand, and on the other keep the empire pleased. He
mistreats the Christian Jewish community from Jerusalem,
martyrs James, and arrests Peter.
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18
To give a good example, Timothy must exercise himself in
piety. The image of rigorous training as a metaphor of Christian
life was used by Paul in the first book of Corinthians. A religious
sensibility that seeks God’s will at all times is of great courage,
because it includes not only the values of the world but of a
future life. Such attitude is in reference of the hope of universal
salvation.
Matthew 16: 13-19
In the vicinity of the city of Philippi, south of Palestine, near
the Jordan River, Jesus directs his friends to a double question.
The first part refers to what the people are saying about him.
Surely, Jesus knew this well, but with this question, Jesus
prepares the one that follows. The following one is “And who do
you say I am?” Jesus shows his disciples that a special
moment has arrived for them. They have to define their
position, not based on what others say, but what they say and
believe. Peter added a confession that Jesus is the Son of God.
Here, the fulfillment of the Scriptures exceeds expectations.
“I thank my God anytime I think of you and when
I pray for you, I pray with joy.” Four years ago
when I met with Fr. Austin at Our Lady of Grace in
Encino, he told me that we are going to
St. Anthony in San Gabriel to learn. Little could I
imagine by then how transformational such a
learning experience will be. Today, I can say it
loud and clear that my pastoral experience here
at St. Anthony has been fruitful and joyful. Many
thanks to our pastor Fr. Austin, the Parish Staff,
the Pastoral and Finance Councils, and my
beloved parishioners whose patience and
friendship has made my stay here at St. Anthony
a hitch-free journey. To say the least, I have
experienced God’s goodness in many of you and I
wish from the depth of my heart to express my
sincere and profound gratitude to each and every
one of you. I ask for your prayers as I move on
with my pastoral journey in Simi Valley and I wish
to assure you of my prayers for God’s blessings in
abundance.

AT&T is modifying their cell phone
installation which is housed both in the
St. Anthony Church tower and also in the
small building just to the North side of the
church entrance. The plan to update this
equipment has been reviewed and
approved by both the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles and Fr. Austin. These improvements will take
about a month. These modifications will not result in
any change to the appearance of our church tower or of
our church grounds. If you have any questions, please
feel free to contact Fr. Austin.

We are currently taking registration for
Fall sessions. FIRST COMMUNION
process is a two year process. Sessions
will be held on Tuesday evenings and
Sunday mornings in English and
Spanish.

catechetical sessions for those children needing to be
baptized on Sunday mornings in the Fall.

registration packet at the Confirmation Office or
the Parish Office. Baptism & 1st Communion

This summer pairs of trained parish volunteers to
be missionaries will pay a polite and friendly visit,
to share our Catholic faith and to invite those we
meet to come to St. Anthony.
We need volunteers to attend the training
workshop and to team up with another volunteer to
go door to door witnessing to Jesus Christ.
Training workshops will be held on Saturday, July
12 in the Multi-Purpose room, and Saturday, July 19 in the
Auditorium from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Summer is almost here. School is almost out, and a
whole host of new opportunities for recreation and
relaxation await. Maybe you are sending your children
to a music or sports camp? Or maybe they have been
invited by their friends to go camping in the mountains or at the

parents still have the responsibility of controlling access that new
people will have to their children. If your children are attending a

Esta semana nuestra diócesis
realizará la Colecta Peter’s Pence, la
cual le proporciona al Santo Padre
los fondos necesarios para realizar
sus obras de caridad en todo el
mundo. Únase a nuestro Santo Padre
como un testigo de la caridad para los que sufren.
No tendremos adoración al Santísimo
durante el día en vista del día feriado,

Lo siguiente es de “Nuestra Parroquia”
"Doy gracias a mi Dios cada vez que pienso en
ustedes y cuando rezo por ustedes, rezo con
alegría." Hace cuatro años cuando me reuní con
el Padre Austin en Nuestra Señora de la Gracia
en Encino, me dijo que íbamos a San Antonio, en
San Gabriel, para aprender. Poco me pude
imaginar entonces cómo` esa experiencia de
aprendizaje podía transformar. Hoy puedo decirlo
en voz alta y claramente que mi experiencia
pastoral aquí en San Antonio ha sido fructífera y
feliz. Muchas gracias a nuestro párroco el padre
Austin, el personal de la oficina, los Consejos
Financiero y Pastoral y a mis queridos feligreses
cuya paciencia y amistad han hecho mi estadía
aquí en San Antonio un lugar acogedor. Lo
menos que puedo decir es que he experimentado
la bondad de Dios en muchos de ustedes y deseo
desde el fondo de mi corazón expresar mi más
sincero y profundo agradecimiento a todos y cada
uno de ustedes. Les pido sus oraciones al seguir
adelante con mi viaje pastoral en Simi Valley y
desde ya están en mis oraciones para que Dios
los bendiga abundantemente.

AT&T esta modificando su instalación de
teléfonos celulares la cual está localizada
en la torre de la iglesia San Antonio y
también en el edificio pequeño al norte de
la entrada de la iglesia. El plan para
actualizar este equipo ha sido revisado y
aprobado por la Arquidiócesis de Los
Ángeles y por el Padre Austin. Estas mejoras tomarán
aproximadamente un mes. Estas modificaciones no
cambiarán la apariencia de la torre de la iglesia o de
nuestras instalaciones. Si tiene preguntas favor de

Las lecturas y su mensaje
Hechos 12:1-11
En la primera persecución a
la iglesia de Jerusalén, todos los
seguidores de Cristo fueron
dispersados, menos los
apóstoles. La represión cayo
sobre el grupo de los helenistas,
no sobre los hebreos. Pero
ahora estamos ante una
persecución a los hebreos y Santiago es la primera victima.
¿Por qué ocurre esto ahora, contra judíos seguidores de
Jesús pero aun fieles a la ley y al templo? Posiblemente sea
una reacción a la visita de Bernabé y Saulo que traen
recursos de la iglesia de Antioquia en solidaridad con la de
Jerusalén. Son recursos que se perciben como de gentiles,
gente impura. Además, poco antes se había dala conversión
de Cornelio, centurión romano. Todo esto puede haber
enfurecido al pueblo judío de Jerusalén. Por otra parte,
Herodes Agripa era un rey pro-romano que buscaba por lado
apaciguar al pueblo y por otro tener contento al imperio.
Maltrata a la comunidad judía cristiana de Jerusalén y
martiriza a Santiago, y arresta a Pedro.
2 Timoteo 4:6-8, 17-18
Para dar buen ejemplo, Timoteo debe ejercitarse en la
piedad. La imagen de entrenamiento riguroso como metáfora
de la vida cristiana fue usada por Pablo en la primera carta a
los corintios. Una sensibilidad religiosa que busca la voluntad
de Dios en todo momento es de gran valor, porque incluye no
solo los valores del mundo sino los de la vida futura. Tal
actitud esta en referencia a la esperanza de salvación
universal.
Mateo 16:13-19
En la cercanías de la ciudad de Filipo, al sur de Palestina,
cerca del rio Jordán, Jesús les dirige a sus amigos una doble
pregunta. La primera parte trata de los que dice la gente
sobre el. Seguramente Jesús lo sabia de sobra, pero con
esta pregunta, Jesús prepara la siguiente. La siguiente es “Y
ustedes, ¿Quién dicen que soy?” Jesús hace ver a sus
discípulos que ha llegado para ellos un momento especial.
Tienen que definir su posición, no en base a lo que digan los
demás, sino a lo que dicen y creen ellos mismos. Pedro
añade una confesión de que Jesús es Hijo de Dios. El
cumplimiento de las Escrituras desborda aquí las
expectativas.
