2 FAVORITE LEISURE ACTIVITIES 2.1 Top 10 Leisure Activities in 2011 The following were the top 10 leisure activities in 2011: Collecting • Virtually everyone collects something. In 2011, 50 million collectors spent $70 billion purchasing items for their collections. Among the most popular collections: art, coins, dolls, and celebrity memorabilia. Fitness Walking • In 2011, 115 million Americans (ages six and older) walked as a fitness activity – walking ranked at #1 among all types of recreational activities. Gardening • Eighty million households, or 70% of all households, engaged in indoor/outdoor lawn and garden activities in 2011 and spent almost $30 billion in these activities. Going to Movies • Cinema box office was approximately 1.25 billion in 2011; receipts were about $10 billion. Going to the Beach • When given a choice of destinations for leisure travel, 44% of adults pick one of America’s 3,500 public beaches, ranking it #1 among all types of travel destinations. Outdoor Activities in Public Parks • Americans made more than 280 million visits to National Parks and 725 million visits to State Parks in 2011. Visits to city parks numbered in the trillions. Reading • 167 million adults, or 73% of all adults, read at least one book in 2011. Among those who read, the median number of books read was four. Women and seniors read the most. Facebook, the most popular social site, had over 150 million registered users in the U.S. Travel • Americans took 1.5 billion trips for leisure in 2011 – spending an estimated $530 billion – which ranks it #1 in spending among all leisure activities. Over 40% of adults traveled on a summer vacation in 2011. Favorite activities for leisure travelers: dining out and shopping. Watching Television • Adults and teens spent 4.3 hours each day in 2011, on average, watching television, with TV topping all media activities. Few, however, gave TV their undivided attention – three-quarters of viewers multitask while watching, going online, talking on mobile devices, or text messaging with also watching TV. Four of the top five choices are activities typically done alone: reading, watching TV, exercising, and computer activities. The Harris Poll found that the number of hours Americans have available for leisure dropped 20% during the economic downturn, to an all-time low of 16 hours. The drop was particularly noteworthy because America’s leisure time had fluctuated less than one hour annually between 1987 and 2007, consistently remaining between 19 and 20 hours. 2.3 Gender Preferences In Leisure Activities Surveys by Frank N. The largest in U.S. history is recognized as Rendezvous Houston held in 1986. With figures varying from 1 to 1.5 million in attendance, the Guinness Book of World Records lists it as the largest outdoor concert in history. • The largest street festival in the U.S. is the Feast of San Gennaro, celebrated in New York, NY’s Little Italy section between Canal and Mott Streets. Although scaled down recently due to crowd control measures, the 11-day event starting in mid-September typically has an estimated one million in attendance. • More than 3.6 million people attended the Taste of Chicago, held annually in June since 1980. • First Night Boston, the oldest and largest alcohol-free New Year’s Eve celebration in the U.S. – held at several locations throughout the city – attracts about 1.5 million people. • Some estimates are that more than two million people are packed into Times Square and the nearby streets for the annual New Years Eve event; other estimates of attendance are in the 500,000 range. • The Houston Live Stock Rodeo draws about 1.7 million spectators each year. • The Eastern States Exposition, an agricultural fair better known as the Big E, is the largest festival in the Northeast.
