Newsletter AUGUST 2013 “ County” — It’s in our name! During the past few months, I’ve encountered it numerous times — “I want to see the CDC be more involved on a county-wide level.” My response? “So do I!” It’s been a pleasure getting to know folks around Crawford County over the first seven months of my employment with the CDC. Although we still have a lot more people to meet, we’ve taken a proactive role in trying to get into all the communities in Crawford County. Rachel Desy and I have taken a couple “field trips” to Schleswig, Arion, Dow City and Vail where we walk into local businesses and hangouts to introduce ourselves. I was honored to be a judge at this year’s chili cookoff in Buck Grove. Soon after I began I enjoyed attending a Charter Oak Commercial Club dinner. I exhausted myself pedalling to Manilla during the annual Manilla Madness bike ride and met some nice folks there. Tourism Coordinator MIchele Ertz (who lives in Manilla) and I recently visited the Dow House, as we plan to visit all tourism destinations in the county. Soon, we’ll make time to visit with all the other communities to offer our services. “ Census data says more than half of the county’s residents live outside Denison. And there are a surprising amount of businesses thriving out beyond the city limits. Sure, Denison seems to get the most air time. And it does make sense — Denison holds the highest city populace, is home to the highest number of businesses, is a regional shopping destination and is the most well known of our communities. However, our other communities are equally important. Census data says more than half of the county’s residents live outside Denison. And there are a surprising amount of businesses thriving out beyond the city limits. I want to find more ways we can all work together to realize our goals. Our economy is regional, after all, and “Crawford County” is literally in our organization’s name. In order to become the true County-wide organization we thrive to be, we’re going to need your help: · Please let us know of any new businesses that have opened or are opening in your communities. We want to provide your ribbon cutting and celebrate with you! The generated publicity is a fantastic free promotion, and you don’t even have to be a CDC member to utilize us for your ribbon cutting. · Keep us informed of events outside Denison. We want to help you promote your community happenings, and we will try to attend them ourselves! We probably don’t know about your events unless you tell us. · Help us grow our membership county-wide. More memberships in communities will force us to be even more accountable and spend more time there. We are here to serve all Crawford County residents and businesses equally, because we want to see all our communities prosper. Please send me an email at eblakley@cdcia.org or call me any time at 712.263.5621. While the event takes place in Uptown, we believe it can bring more people to the county from the entire region, and they shop with many merchants while they are here. It also provides our residents one more reason to stay in town all weekend instead of driving to the city. We are excited to announce that Uptown Market will be coming back in the fall, pending approval from Denison City Council. More details with opening dates will be coming soon!
