 Cooperative Business Education Syllabus Course Description Cooperative Business Education (CBE) is a senior co-­‐op program designed for students interested in a business career. CBE students will demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office 2007, basic accounting, records management, electronic calculator operations, telephone techniques, recordkeeping, and many other business related skills. The CBE program includes related instruction (classroom) and supervised, paid work experience (on the job) in the students’ areas of interest. CBE will prepare students for further education in the business field on the post-­‐
secondary level. Students in the CBE program have the opportunity to earn 12 college credits from Stark State College of Technology. Pre-­‐requisite Courses Modern Business Practice Recommended but NOT Required Computer Applications Recommended but NOT Required Instructional Philosophy Upon graduation, all students will be faced with personal business and financial decisions. Students in the CBE program will be engaged in a variety of challenging business related projects and assignments. The skills learned through these projects and assignments will apply to everyday life decisions, as well as, prepare them for a career in today’s business office. The skills learned will also prepare students for a continuation of their business education on the post-­‐secondary level. Students will be using state-­‐of-­‐the-­‐art computer equipment and application software. Students will be required to participate in Business Professionals of America (a national student leadership organization for students pursuing careers in business management, office administration, information technology, and other related career fields). Course Goals The goal of the CBE program is to give students the opportunity to learn business skills and obtain office related work experience. The CBE program will also prepare students to continue their business education on the post-­‐secondary level. Using Microsoft Office 2007, students will demonstrate knowledge and application of office applications using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher. Students will practice and apply skills learned to prepare business documents relative to each of the above listed Microsoft Office programs. Students will organize information and develop complex business documents by integrating skills from the various programs included in Microsoft Office 2007. Students will develop the proper techniques for operating a desktop calculator to solve business math problems. Students will understand and then apply ARMA (Association of Records Managers and Administrators, Inc.) rules to organize, manipulate and file office documents alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically. Students will apply GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) to develop accounting records and financial statements. Students will analyze and evaluate financial transactions, concepts and principles according to GAAP. Major Assignments •

Daily assignments – Students will complete daily assignments practicing a variety of business skills such as: word processing, spreadsheets, databases, multimedia presentations, desktop publishing, filing, calculator operations, accounting, and other business related competencies learned in the CBE program. Microsoft Office 2007 Simulation – Students will complete Microsoft Office 2007 simulation using Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, and Publisher to complete business documents. Students will need to apply skills learned to produce documents such as: letters, resumes/cover letters, agendas, meeting minutes, tables, spreadsheets, mail merge files, flyers, multimedia presentations, etc. This project will extend over a period of approximately six weeks to complete. Office Filing Procedures Simulation – Using ARMA rules and skills learned, students will complete simulation. Students will need to analyze and apply ARMA rules to complete the simulation. This project will extend over a period of approximately one week to three weeks to complete. Business Machines Simulation – Students will complete a variety of assignments such as: invoices, purchase orders, sales slips, payroll records, inventory records, bank forms, etc. applying the skills acquired for using a desktop electronic calculator. This project will extend over a period of approximately four to six weeks. Students will analyze business transactions and organize financial information needed to prepare the financial records of two different businesses. The students will then evaluate the financial condition of these two businesses. This project will extend over a period of several weeks to complete. Students will create a portfolio of examples of their work to use as a reference guide for future work or as examples of their skills to show potential employers. Grading Plan Grade A Scale 93 to 100 B 85 to 92 C 77 to 84 D 70 to 76 F Below 70 Description of Work Consistently demonstrates an advanced level of quality. Shows mastery in evaluating, synthesizing, and applying the appropriate tools (software, reference materials, and internet) to solve the problem at hand. Student is achieving at least 93% of the competencies presented. Consistently demonstrates an above average level of quality. Assignments are completed using the skills learned in class. Student is achieving at least 85% of the competencies presented. Demonstrates a proficient level of quality. Shows a recognition and comprehension of the presented material. Student is achieving at least 77% of the competencies presented. Demonstrates a basic level of quality. Shows limited understanding or comprehension of the presented material. Student is achieving at least 70% of the competencies presented. Demonstrates a below basic level of quality. Shows little or no understanding or comprehension of presented material. Most components of the class are incomplete or of poor quality. Re-­‐Do Policy Generally, students may not re-­‐do assignments for additional credit. If a student has a particular problem with an assignment, they may be given additional instructions and a chance to re-­‐do the work. Late or Missing Work Policy All work will have a final due date. The work must be turned in by the final due date or it will not be accepted for credit. Assignments that are not turned in by the final due date will receive a grade of 0%. In cases of extended absences due to illness, etc., the student will be given a reasonable amount of additional time to complete the work. Extra-­‐Help Students may arrange a time with the teacher for extra help before school, during study hall, or after school.
