WELCOME 2013
Hello, and please accept a very warm welcome to this year’s AIYF. Fresh off the back of last
year’s 40th anniversary celebrations AIYF is ready to shine once again.
This year the Festival has grown again, not just by
way of applications from groups and soloists but in its
aspiration and ambition.
We are delighted to once again be presenting performers
from countries such as the USA, Russia, Colombia,
Canada, Hungary, Ukraine, Australia and Uganda.
As part of an ever changing landscape of culture it’s
important that we are ahead in terms of recognising new
ways in which we can present the Festival to our wonderful
supporters, partners, participants and audiences.
It’s important for us to remember what a marvellously
international event the youth Festival is, and how it
provides a real hub for bringing together young people
to perform, collaborate and communicate with each
other in a creative environment.
With this in mind we have taken a fresh look at our
design for the event, revitalised the programme to
include new initiatives like the Spotlight Sessions and
the Lemon Tree Youth Dance & Theatre Series and
revamped our website so that it’s more user friendly.
We haven’t forgotten about our very successful core
work though, that is focussed on proudly showcasing
a wealth of home-grown and international talent from
across the arts disciplines. This ranges from classical
music to jazz, big band to choirs, soloists, opera,
theatre productions and dance performances.
In essence, AIYF 2013 is about fun, fresh, exciting
performances and expanding on the great work of past
Festivals providing stimulating cultural experiences for
everyone to enjoy. Finally I would like to invite you all
to take full advantage of this year’s eclectic programme
and enjoy every minute of the Festival, it always passes
so quickly and is over too soon!
Enjoy!

THE SPOTLIGHT SESSIONS
A brand new initiative for AIYF 2013 is a Creative
Scotland funded element called the ‘Spotlight Sessions’.
These sessions look to shine a light on the best new
and emerging young professional talent in music
from across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
For the first time ever the Festival has programmed
young acts that have already turned professional in a
bid to support talent development, even when young
artists have already turned a corner in their careers.
These shows also recognise that young talent,
particularly musicians, are becoming professional
at a younger age and also need our support.
Although AIYF is a platform for high-quality amateur
groups including the National Youth Arts organisations,
in our strategic artistic vision we plan to also be a
platform for young professional performers across
different genres.
Promoting the best new professional young talent
through programming these artists at the Festival
also acts to inspire the young amateur groups and
individuals already participating in AIYF.
We see these ‘sessions’ as being an important part
in the development of the young artists themselves.
The following programme has been made possible
through funding from Creative Scotland.
Groups taking part in the ‘Spotlight Sessions’ will
also provide workshops for young people in and
around Aberdeen as part of the participation. To
find out more about the community workshops with
these musicians please visit the website and visit
the ‘Spotlight Sessions’ page to register an interest.

The
Port
Following on from the great success of last year’s 40th anniversary
parade, The Port Project is set to sail again for a second year. The
Port Project, a multi-arts collaboration, delivering ‘first in a lifetime’ arts
experiences to young people across the North East. Partly funded by a
£130,000 grant from Creative Scotland, and sponsored by Aberdeen
Harbour, the project aims to continue to bring new arts opportunities to
the youth of the City.
The ‘Cultivate’ arts volunteer strand of the programme has been a great success. Team
Cultivate was established in 2012 by Aberdeen City Council’s Arts Development team, and
has grown from strength to strength since. The team have been challenged to build on their
learning from last year by developing and delivering their very own project.
The Port project 2013 will be working with different groups of young people who will be
given the choice of stilt walking, dance, drumming or making a large display piece. The
groups will also participate in the parade, along with the participants of AIYF and the
Tartan Day parade. AIYF is working in partnership with ACC Creative Learning and
community learning teams to get these groups of young people involved in arts
activities across the city. The parade will take place on Union Street on
Saturday 27th July from 11am.
The Cultivate team will then deliver workshops as part of
Festival in the City at Union Terrace Gardens, passing their
skills on to even more young people.

CHOIRS
CANADA
MEDICINE HAT COLLEGE GIRLS’ CHOIR
The Medicine Hat College Girls’ Choir is a community choir of girls aged 12 to 18 years.
An ensemble of the Medicine Hat College Conservatory, the aim of the choir is to provide
teenage girls with the experience of achieving excellence in choral singing and to encourage a
lifelong love of choral music. The choir was founded in 1972 by Dr. Carol Anderson, and has
been under the guidance of its current director, Bradley van Middelkoop, since 2008. Through
involvement with the choir, each girl is given the opportunity to sing a challenging and varied
repertoire of music from many countries and styles, work in an environment of shared
music-making with other young people, and gain the satisfaction of high achievement.
The choir maintains a very busy schedule of rehearsals, performances, workshops and tours.
Although tours provide special opportunities for the choir to perform, the choir believes that it is
a pleasure and privilege to sing in the local community and appear regularly at local churches
and varied community events in addition to annual Christmas and Spring Concerts. Recent
tour highlights include a tour of France and attendance at the Europa Cantat International
Choral Festival in Utrecht, The Netherlands (2009), the Unisong Festival in Ottawa, Canada
(2010), and a tour of Cuba (2011). The choir is honoured to consistently win their classes at
the local music festival, achieve GOLD standings at Choralfest Alberta, and be recommended
to compete at the Alberta Provincial Music Festival. In addition to competitions and festivals the
choir actively seeks opportunities to learn from other conductors and choirs through workshops,
exchanges and joint concerts.
CHINA
BEIJING ALL STARS
Founded in 1998, the group has become one of the most outstanding choirs of Beijing.
It is made up of students aged between 13 and 18. The choir is frequently invited to social
performance in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing Concert Hall and CCTV Tower. From
1999 onwards, the choir has won first prize in Beijing Students’ Choir Festival every year.
It has presented special choir concerts like ‘Sailing In The New Century’, and ‘Flower In
Full Bloom’. The choir holds the ethos of ‘based in Beijing, going to the world’, playing an
important role in the international cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world.

The APA Youth Theatre has both Junior and Senior
performing groups for participants age 12 to 18. It
gives them the chance to develop their skills in theatre

in contemporary performances and these energetic and
passionate young performers love appearing on stage.
For AIYF they are presenting a new and challenging
work called ‘Greymatter’ looking at issues of teenage
mental health problems.
The Rhona Mitchell School of Drama was set up
originally in Inverurie in 1983, and then operating
as MSD in the West End of Glasgow in 1988,
where it ran very successfully until Rhona’s return to
Aberdeenshire in 1998. The school aims to cultivate
an interest in theatre and drama by providing classes
for a wide range of abilities and the opportunity to
participate in a variety of stage productions. MSD
has been a regular contributor to the AIYF since 2006
when they performed their production of ‘Twelfth Night’.

SPOTLIGHT
SESSIONS
SKERRYVORE
Skerryvore first formed on the tiny lsle of Tiree off Scotland’s
west coast in 2005. Back then, the band consisted of
Tiree-born brothers Daniel Gillespie (accordion) and
Martin Gillespie (bagpipes, whistles & accordion) who
bonded with holidaymaker Fraser West (drums & vocals)
and friend Alec Dalglish (lead vocals & guitar) over a
shared love of music: everything from traditional to rock
and jazz. It was this mix of musical styles and sounds that
set the path for the band’s 2005 debut album, ‘West
Coast Life’. The more the fledgling band experimented
with fusing together this mix of musical styles, the more
their signature sound evolved, aided by the arrival of
Barry Caulfield (bass & vocals) and Craig Espie (fiddle)
in time for their second album, ‘On The Road’, in 2007.
But it was with the release of self-titled third album,
‘Skerryvore’, that the band found themselves catapulted
into the musical limelight winning a string of prestigious
awards, including SNMA Record of the Year 2011
and STMA Live Act of the Year 2011, and garnering
much critical acclaim:
In Autumn 2012, bassman Barry Caulfield decided
to move on and was replaced by former Wolfstone
bassist, Colin Cunningham.
When not touring the different corners of the globe,
the band can still be found performing relentlessly,
contributing to projects by Live Music Now (LMN), The
Royal Blind School, Artlink Central and HMP Cornton
Vale as well as special needs schools throughout the
UK. They also feature in a current VisitScotland TV
commercial aimed at international audiences.
To quote the words of one local journalist:
“Six of the best musical ambassadors Scotland could
ever have wished for... a living, breathing, 12 legged
party waiting to happen.”
“Skerryvore are the most promising young band in
Scotland today.’’
Mick MacNeil, Simple Minds
In June 2012 the band released what is undeniably their
most polished and radio-ready album to date. ‘World
of Chances’ weaves together the band’s spine-tingling
musical talents with the award-winning songwriting abilities
of frontman Alec Dalglish (Frankie Miller Songwriter of
the Year 2011). At times uplifting, at times reflective,
the result is a brighter, breezier, feel-good sound that
looks set to broaden the band’s appeal even further.

Their debut album ‘Fanfares’ has won rave reviews,
from the Guardian to BBC Music, and was nominated

a passion for music and performing has remained at its
core for over twenty-five years.
Having regularly showcased the music through solo
and group performances across Vancouver Island,
they have recently received wider recognition of
their talent with top marks from examiners from the
Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto. Following a
recommendation by an Examiner of the Musikschule
Feldkirchen in Carinthia, Austria, La Isla travelled to the
region and performed at various Conservatory venues
to great acclaim.
The Helga Hagen Music Studio was established over
twenty-five years ago and has received recognition
across the whole of Canada.

SUMMER COURSES
CEÒL MÒR
Ceòl Mòr is a Scots-Canadian trad music big band.
Aberdeen International Youth Festival started the band
in 2006 for young musicians interested in playing new
and existing Scottish music rooted in the folk tradition.
It commissions and performs new music by top trad
players who are interested in composing work on
a large scale. Previous collaborators have included
Corrina Hewat and David Milligan (Unusual Suspects),
Aidan O’Rourke (Lau) and the Treacherous Orchestra.
Members of the band also contribute pieces.
In 2013, Ceòl Mòr is excited to welcome awardwinning singer and songwriter, Karine Polwart. Karine
will be working with composer-in-residence Hamish
Napier and musical director Stephen Deazley on new
arrangements of her songs to be performed, along with
a new piece by Hamish Napier, at a gala concert in
Aberdeen’s Music Hall.
Ceòl Mòr is open to young musicians aged between
16 and 25 on any instrument including brass and
woodwind. You should play at the equivalent of grade
5 minimum, have good sight-reading and also be
comfortable with learning by ear. Because there are
going to be a lot of songs this year, we’re keen to hear
from singers who might not play.
CHAMBER MUSIC PROJECT
AIYF’s Chamber Music Project, led by Hebrides Ensemble
and its Artistic Director William Conway, is recruiting
young ensembles and musicians with a passion for
chamber music. Having focused on performance for the
last three years, in 2013 AIYF will offer an additional
course for young composers led by Stuart MacRae.

chamber musicians and composers the opportunity to
develop their musical skills alongside some of the very
best musicians in the UK. The Performance Course
includes a programme of tutored sessions with William
Conway and members of Hebrides Ensemble as well
as the opportunity to play chamber music informally with
members of Hebrides Ensemble and fellow participants.
The Composition Course is designed to enable each
composer to develop his or her own technique in a
focused and supportive way. Composers will spend
mornings in one-to-one sessions with Stuart MacRae,
addressing specific technical issues and writing short
examples for performance during the afternoon sessions.

DESIGN A COVER –
SUPPORTED BY SHELL
It’s the second year that Aberdeen International Youth Festival (AIYF) has joined forces with
Shell to challenge primary school children from across Aberdeen city and shire to design
artwork for the front cover of our Festival brochure.
Hundreds of entries were received from schools across
the North-east, ranging from Robert Gordon’s College
to St Peter’s School. The competition was judged by a
panel of local artists and Festival supporters including
Anne Marquiss from Aberdeen Artists’ Society,
Gill Hay from Shell and Sally Moir from SMart
Consultants. They all found it difficult to choose just
one winner from an outstanding selection of entries.
Many of the schools received workshops from
Aberdeen based artist, Jim Ewen, who went into
schools to work with classes to tease out the best ideas.
The young winner, Neve Smith, from Holy Family
Primary School aged 11, has her design featured on
the inside front cover of AIYF’s 2013 festival brochure.
In addition, Neve received £100 worth of AIYF festival
vouchers for her family and friends and wins Holy
Family Primary School a generous £400 cash prize
provided by sponsors Shell UK that will allow new
art materials to be bought for the school.
There were four runners-up from two categories.
The runners up from primary 1-3 were Christian
Graham, aged 7, from Robert Gordon’s College
and Kelsie Beaton, aged 6 from Hanover Street

their time at the Festival.
Judges from Shell, AIYF, Aberdeen Artists Society and
SMart Consultants chose the winning entries.
The overall winner was chosen from entries sent in from
across Aberdeen city and shire.
Tracy Lee, aged 12, of St Margaret’s School for Girls

LET’S PASS ENERGY
ON TO THE NEXT
GENERATION.
The Yoshida children have a lot of energy. But the country they’re growing up
in doesn’t. Japan, like many other countries, needs a reliable source of energy.
That’s why Shell is helping to deliver natural gas to more countries than any other
energy company. Not just for tonight’s bowl of warming noodles, but for
years to come, when the children may have children of their own.
Let’s broaden the world’s energy mix. Let’s go. www.shell.com/letsgo
