Based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest and the 1950’s sci fi film Forbidden Planet, the musical features classic rock and roll hits from the 1950s and 1960s that tell the story of Captain Tempest, who is drawn to the planet D’Illyria during a routine flight where he meets mad scientist Dr. Prospero and his daughter Miranda, now a young woman who has never seen a human being other than her father. Captain Tempest’s ship cook falls in love with Miranda, Miranda falls in love with the captain, a robot speaks of a mysterious mind-altering formula and thus is laid the groundwork for romance, spurned advances and a bevvy of song and dance numbers such as Gary Puckett’s “Young Girl (Get Out of My Life)”, the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” and The Byrds’ “Mr. Spaceman.” Return to the Forbidden Planet includes a cast of 14 and stars Phillip Percy Williams as Captain Tempest and Maura Tang as Miranda, Steve Beecroft as Cookie, Paul Abbott as Prospero and Nicole Frydman as Gloria. Directed by Carl Jordan with choreography by Curtain Theatre veteran Steve Beecroft, the musical is slated for June 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, and 29 at 8:00pm and afternoon performances June 23 and 30 at 3:00pm in the Dan Caldwell Theatre at Tamalpais High School and makes use of the video projection wall in the new 20,000-square-foot multi-use theatre. The live four-piece band will peform more than 25 rock and roll songs. “I first saw “Return to the Forbidden Planet” in London the 1990’s” said choreographer, Steve Beecroft. “I have wanted to bring it to our audiences here ever since. We have a team of talented actors and musicians from all over the Bay Area and we look forward to high energy fun performances of this Olivier award-winning musical with songs that will get the audience dancing in the aisles.” 2013 Season to Feature Two Plays Return to the Forbidden Planet is the first of two performances slated for the 2013 Curtain Theatre season and is the first to take place indoors at the Dan Caldwell Theatre.
