TC Drama will present the comedy SCAPIN, October 13-17 at 7:30 and October
18 at 2:30. Student tickets are $5, Adults $10. All tickets may be bought at the
door. A plot summary follows:
TCHS
Scapin
pronounced /Skä * PĂN/
by Bill Irwin
The crafty Scapin, servant to the household of Geronte, jumps into the story as he first promises to help in the affairs of his neighbor's son, Octave, then to aid in those of his own charge,
Leander (Geronte's son). Both young men have fallen in love with unlikely, and penniless
beauties, and both need money to help solve their dilemmas. Scapin knows a good ruse will
always win the day and he drafts Sylvestre, Octave's servant, into his schemes. Convincing
Sylvestre he's a wonderful actor (and allowing him to build characterizations using movie
cliches), Scapin has him play characters who will deceive the family patriarchs into parting
with large sums of money. Once the money is obtained, however, Scapin pushes further in
order to exact a little revenge on those he's served. Thinking Geronte has said something
nasty about him, Scapin sets out to teach him a lesson. The roguish words, however, are
Scapin's own lies and stories finally coming back to him, his revenge backfires and he must
flee. In the end however, Scapin's schemes aid in revealing the penniless beauties to be the
exact right mates for the young charges—being of high birth after all since they are discovered to be the missing children of both patriarchs—and Scapin returns to his post, with the
pleasant punishment of having to marry the maidservant of one of the daughters. There is a
final chase and dance among all the participants, which,
inevitably, becomes the raucous, delightful curtain call.
Mr. Meenach’s B1 English class is about to conclude our first unit
over literary elements & short stories. The test will be in early October, and then we will begin our first major writing assignment – a
character analysis paper.
ADDITIONAL TUTORING AVAILABLE...
University of Kentucky students will be offering tutoring sessions on
Tuesdays and Thursdays in room 328 from 3:30pm – 5:00pm. These
sessions are open to all students for all subjects.
From Mrs. Fraker’s class…
We are just finishing up our second unit on the “Foundations of
American Democracy.” We have had a lot of success and the students
seem to be doing well at analyzing documents, such as the Constitution. Our second test is just around the corner, be ready on either
October 13th or 14th. After the break, we will begin our third unit on
“The Rights and Responsibilities of American Citizens.” Students will
also begin to complete their required three hours of community service, so be on the lookout for service opportunities for your Social
Studies teacher to approve. Also, on the horizon is a special visit
from guest speaker Representative Farmer to discuss with our students what life is like as a Legislator. Please don’t hesitate to contact
us directly with any questions.
From HONORS GLOBAL ECONOMICS (Mrs. Call and Ms. George)…
We are in the middle of our second unit, Political Parties in the United
States. Students are learning about what purpose political parties
serve, why the United States has a two party system, and what responsibilities come with voting in a democratic society. Testing for
this unit will be Tuesday, October 13(B) and Wednesday, October 14
(A).
We will also begin an afterschool “study session” for all Honors Global
Economics Classes. Information about these study sessions will be
send to parents via email through class distribution lists. Stay tuned
for more info.
Mrs. Bordas’ General English class is continuing to
read Tears of a Tiger. They are also in the process
of writing their own original short story as a literary piece for their working folders. The students
really seem to be enjoying getting to use their
creativity!! They should also be in the process of
reading their outside reading book, which they
checked out last week. Their outside reading test
will be October 13.
Mrs. Bordas’ Honors English classes are still reading Romeo and Juliet. Students always love the
action and romance in this Shakespearean drama.
We will continue to read this through the month
of October, and their exam will be October 20 or
21.
Mrs. Ransdell’s class…
Honors English I students are working on their first
major writing piece—personal narrative or memoir.
In addition, we are finishing up NIGHT this week.
Our test will be Oct. 13.
English I students are finishing Sharon Draper’s
Tears of a Tiger. Our test will be on Oct. 9. Then
we will begin our first major writing assignment—
personal narrative or memoir. We will spend time in
class pre-writing, writing, editing. Papers will be due
Oct. 13 / 14.
