KIM JOHNSON NWA
F
OR as long as Kim Johnson can remember, the only
thing she ever wanted to do was be an artist, but people were discouraging her in the arts, referring to painting
as a hobby not a career. So she went to college to pursue a
profession in psychology. After graduating from college,
Kim continued to be called to the world of art.
Kim says “I started to take art classes, and wow! Was that
exciting!! I love creating paintings. There are times when
I’ve finished a painting, I’ll stand back and think ‘I did
that??!!!’ The whole process.....from the composition to
drawing to painting is thrilling.”
As an artist, Kim likes to use several different approaches
to get herself started with painting. Sometimes she likes
to do wet into wet
on a horizontal
surface, getting
the paper wet
first then adding
color, or sometimes she paints
vertically, laying down a graded wash first, and
sometimes does
a combo of both!
Kim explains “I
have to get the
feel of the painting first, and then some how I just know intuitively where
to get started. This is one of those “ah-ha” moments that
we as artists hear about.....moments that seem so elusive
when it comes to ourselves. If you listen very carefully
though, you will hear it when it happens.”

“
T
he Girls On A Windy Day” was created wet into wet.
Kim will be demonstrating this technique at the AWA
October meeting and continue on with the method at the
Saturday workshop. This painting was accepted into the
Transparent Watercolor Society of America juried by Ted
Nuttall this past summer. It won the VIVIAN "CHEVY"
CHEVILLON MEMORIAL AWARD. She traveled to the
show in Bloomington, MN, where they had an entertaining
dinner and watched Cheng-Khee Chee perform his watercolor magic.
According to Kim’s friend, fellow teacher and AWA member
Carole Hillsbery, Kim is a very innovative painter. When
Kim approaches the paper it is with enthusiasm and determination. Carole says “I have watched her splash, drip,
and throw color as she challenges herself to be loose and
free. And, of course, the results are always breathtakingly

FROM YOUR PRESIDENT......
Dear Fellow AWA Members:
I am so glad it is almost October! It means cooler weather is just
around the corner, and I am looking forward to our first demonstration
by Kim Johnson.
We had approximately 72 artists and 172 slides entered into our fall
show. This is a very good representation given that so many people are
still out of town from their summer vacations. Thanks to all who entered
and good luck!
We are still looking for someone to take over the Exhibitions Chair position. This is a really fun job. Please think about grabbing a couple of
buddies and becoming a team. I promise that you will enjoy yourselves
and extra hands make light work. Also, the sense of accomplishment in
a job well done is always a bonus!!! You will be providing a very valuable service to the AWA. Please call me. I am available to answer any
questions you may have.
Yours in Service,

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR!
Say “Yes” to the position of 2nd Vice President on the AWA Executive
Board. You not only will have the chance to help decide the future
of AWA, as Membership Exhibitions Chairperson, you will make new
friends with members and become acquainted with nationally known
artists, who jury the shows. It is a special opportunity that offers much
in compensation.
If time is a problem, ask a friend to share the duties as a Co-Chair. You
could even rotate attending Board meetings. Stan Kurth is the third
able-bodied Co-Chair. He handles receiving, delivering and returning
the shipped paintings. The committee is already organized, thanks to
our President, Sherry Kimmel. You only have to carry out her plan.
Call Sherry (602-439-6846), or Nancy Schaller (480-945-0340), to join
the fun of being part of an elite team.

Months before the class, I decided to

Eventually, Shirley, her husband Steve
and their two children moved to Arizona to operate several Sonic Drive-Ins.
hirley’s development as an artist
was fostered by her love of photography, which really blossomed when
she started traveling to Africa to photograph the wildlife. Shirley reveals “...I
was creating stories with the photos.
I did discover that some photos were

taking photos for two reasons.”
I had already played with high color in

had hit a real bad streak of rejections,
and was pretty ticked off. I wanted
to sign my work not as 'Kleppe', but
TTO. Totally Ticked Off!!!! Someone
had mentioned that I would be known
for my red paintings. I just put it together, totally outraged...‘Outrageous

carefully started working toward high

color will stop the juror long enough
to take a longer look at my work.

no one to follow, it was like
reinventing the wheel. Months would
follow with a painting sitting on the

‘The Mysterious Red Roach Motel'
was my leap away from the pots and

Therefore she is an ideal candidate to be our next Editor–in-Chief. She and Liz Ramsey, Co-Editor, will collaborate, fusing the membership’s ideas and input into a monthly newsletter, published September through November and January

ARTICLE BY LIZ RAMSEY
Renee studied art, design and interior design and received a
Bachelor of Arts from California State University at Long
Beach in 1984. She has studied extensively with many nationally recognized art instructors. Her favorite mediums
are watercolor and acrylic.
Along the way Renee has received a number of awards,
and since moving to Arizona has become the official portrait painter for Arizona Magic of Music and Dance – a
non-profit organization that holds events for special needs
children, somewhat like Special Olympics, using dance,
theater, music and art instead of athletics.
Renee’s sense of color, her passion for design and her incredible zest for life are illustrated in her artwork. She
will readily admit that she delights in creating fanciful and
richly colored pieces. She utilizes realism and abstract
shapes in her artwork.
Renee moved to Arizona from Southern California in 2005.
She and her husband, Emmy-Award-winning musician
Mahlon Hawk, live in SouthEast Mesa in an artistically
appointed home with their three white Bichon Frise breed
dogs. Renee is currently employed by Herman Miller, Inc.
as a Healthcare Design Team Leader. She leads a national
team, designing hospital interiors and clinical space for
hospitals all over the Western United States.

Best of Luck to you Marilyn!
Since childhood, Liz has had a vigorous interest in art.
Liz’s mother was an art teacher and watercolorist, Liz’s
sister is a working artist in New Hampshire. Liz likes bold
colors and enjoys looking for design in nature. She believes the study of any aspect of art opens one’s eyes to a
new dimension of the world.
Liz’s passion for watercolor has been sustained by classes
and workshops for a number of years. The beautiful transparency and richness of watercolor images inspire her.
Liz will continue as the newsletter’s Co-Editor. Her
sparkle and energy keep your newsletter informative and
interesting. Liz’s job will be to gather information from
the membership and present it to the Editor-in-Chief in a
manner conducive to the production of the finished copy.
Given that task --- Liz requests that all members be
aware that they can submit information to her via email (lizartist@cox.net) for review for the newsletter.
Liz has the job of editing and writing. Her responsibility
is to assure that the news is pertinent and clear. Her collaboration with Renee will be via e-mail and in person
