But now the 17-year-old Bishop Feehan High School
senior is getting national recognition.
The publishing company McDougal Littell has featured
Grenier in a new Spanish textbook that will be in
schools across the country next year. The textbook has
a photograph of Grenier and a story about how she
tutors Hispanic students in a bilingual program at
Brennan Middle School.
A number of students are profiled in the book in an attempt to show students practical
uses for Spanish.
"It shows normal kids are using Spanish in their everyday lives," Grenier said.
A Wrentham resident, Grenier and Feehan graduate Jennifer Esmond helped start the
tutoring program last year. It has now grown to 20 Feehan students acting as tutors
and has taken on the name Amigo.
Grenier said many of the Hispanic students are new to the United States and some
speak little or no English.
"It’s a mentorship program we do during our free period. We get to know the kids
and help them with their homework and reading comprehension. We speak to them
in Spanish and help translate for them," she said.
Get a lot out of it
Theresa Grenier said she gets as much out of the tutoring program as she puts into it.
She said she gets to hone her Spanish skills and learn about Central American customs
and folklore from the children.

"We’re building a cultural bridge. It’s just wonderful. I love it so much because it’s
been an enriching experience," she said.
She said it is also rewarding to see new immigrants improve their English and break
out of the isolation they often live in as newcomers to the country and the school.
Grenier hopes to attend Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She wants to continue
her education in Spanish, but her first love is acting, so she will major in theatre.
For now, her starring role will be as a model in a national textbook to high school
students who want to know the value of learning a second language.
