Course Description
In this course, you will study the various characteristics and applications of advanced algebraic functions that
include but are not limited to the following: linear, quadratic, rational, nth degree, logarithmic, exponential, and
trigonometric. You will also study other topics that include: probability, conic sections, and sequences. Within all
of these topics you will be asked to follow certain Common Core mathematical practices include:
1) Make sense of problems and persevere in solving
2) Reason abstractly and quantitatively
3) Construct viable arguments and critique reasoning of others
4) Model mathematics
5) Use appropriate tools strategically
6) Attend to precision
7) Look for and make use of structure
8) Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Class Expectations
1. Be on time!
Be in your seat when the bell rings. Turn your assignments in on time.
2. Be ready!
Make sure to have paper, pencils, calculator (Ti-Nspire CX CAS), Chromebook, & a BINDER/FOLDER
(You will receive plenty of handouts in this course) or a Notebook. You can leave your Algebra II
textbook at home unless requested, since we will be using it mostly for homework. Have your electronics
fully charged as you will not be able to borrow one if you forget it or don’t have it charged.
3. Be an active learner!
Daily participation is expected. This means you are alert, focused, and ready to discuss homework and
other problems during class. Take detailed notes. .
4. Demonstrate respect!
Respect the academic process. Be an active listener and respond cordially with everyone. Silence your
phones and put them away Be honest with yourself and talk appropriately to your classmates and teacher.
Have academic integrity.
***Absences***
Make your best effort to be here on a daily basis as we will be learning/reinforcing various mathematical skills as a
team. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to consult with your peers or teacher for any missed notes and/or
assignments. Check your email for messages and email Mr. Leibfried to find out what you missed. A folder is
always kept in our classroom with extra worksheets, so make sure to get any missed notes/handouts the day upon
return. If you are absent, please read the missed section in your book and go to the TLC for extra help. Check the
GOOGLE website for notes, worksheets, etc. and complete these if possible. If you still have questions about the
lesson, please make an appointment to meet with Mr. L outside of class. Appointments can be made after class or
via email. Communicate prearranged absences in advanced to acquire the work that you will miss.
Homework
Homework will be assigned on a daily basis for practice. Random “Pop Homework Quizzes” for the chapters will
be given to see if students are completing their work. As you complete your homework include at the top the page
number, problem numbers, and section. We expect you to try every problem. Don’t just write the original problem
down and leave it blank or put a question mark. Homework is an important tool to help learn material. We expect
you to make mistakes. However, we expect you to put forth your best effort to complete it. When you are finished
check your answers on the google site. https://sites.google.com/a/dist113.org/leibfried/home Correct your mistakes
and take notes to be able to ask good questions.
Quizzes and Tests
Quizzes and tests are given weekly. For each chapter you can expect usually 1-2 quizzes and a chapter test. Both
quizzes and test will vary between calculator and non-calculator use.
***Please refer to each unit assignment guide for quiz and test dates.
***If you are absent on “review day,” you are still required to take the quiz or test, along with the rest of the class.
***If you are absent on the day of a quiz or test, you will be expected to make up the quiz/test in the Makeup Test
Center within 2 school days. Failure to do so will result in the student making up the quiz/test at a time that is
convenient to the teacher and a possible late grade of 10%.
Grades
Grades are determined as follows:
 Total Points Earned Divided by Total Points Possible
 80% of the semester grade is determined by the quarters and 20% is determined by the final exam.
 It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of his/her current grade on Infinite Campus.
 Progress reports for each quarter will be sent via Infinite Campus at week 5 marking period.
Tardies
Students who fail to be on time, will receive a warning for the first two tardies. After two tardies, you will receive
a detention. Further actions will entail a dean’s referral.
Discipline
As a reminder, the school handbook will be consulted for any disciplinary concerns.
How can students prepare for math class?
Research has shown that success depends more on practice and perseverance than innate ability. (Dubner and
Levitt. New York Times 5/7/06, Psychology Today November/December 2005)
a. Make flash cards to learn geometry theorems or math formulas
b. Practice past problems discussed in class especially problems that the student did not understand the first time
they completed the problem.
c. Complete daily homework (upon completion the student should seek out help as soon as possible regarding
problems he/she did not understand)
d. Practice a quiz/test taking environment. Create a "practice" exam and time yourself.
e. Find a "study buddy," i.e., Get fellow classmates’ phone numbers / e-mail so that you can contact him or her for
help or to find out discussions missed during absences.
f. Use internet resources if available for the textbook.
g. "Dream, Believe, and Achieve."
h. Go to The Learning Center (A220) to check answers to homework problems and/or get help with math.
i. Meet with the teacher to discuss quiz/test questions that the student did not understand after discussing it in class
j. Communicate with your teacher – Express your concerns – We have an open door policy.
k. Use math websites such as Khan Academy as a resource tool.
l. Preread sections that we are going to discuss the day before to familiarize yourself.
