Autumn 2014
Fact sheet:
Securing services at
Christchurch Hospital
What is happening on site?
From 24 October 2014, the Outpatients
Department will be based in the refurbished Forest
Dene. A waiting area for outpatients has been
created in the Dermatology Lounge.
The Main Entrance will move to the rear of the
North Entrance from 24 October where a canopy
will have been erected over the door entrance. A
bell will be available for anyone who cannot gain
access without help; this bell will go through to the
reception area situated in the old hairdressers.
Pharmacy will still be located in G Block at the back
of the Courtyard Dining Room.
Phlebotomy is now temporarily based in the former
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Gym situated next to the
Courtyard Dining Room and has a dedicated
waiting area for patients. Patients still need to get
tickets from the Outpatients reception.
The Day Hospital remains where it is.
X-Ray operates from a temporary facility near the
Macmillan Unit and the Rheumatology
Department is based in M Block.
Who will be carrying out the
next phase of works?
Christchurch-based construction company Stan
Randell and Co have been chosen to deliver both
the refurbishment of the existing Outpatients
Department and the new extension in which the
new GP surgery, retail pharmacy and X-Ray
Department will be located.
The company has a long history with the hospital
Trust having been involved in a number of projects
at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Its workforce
and subcontractors are all based locally so it’s great
news for the local economy.
When is H Block coming down?
The hoardings are now in place around H Block and
the building is ready to come down. This work is
being carried out by Hughes and Salvidge who aim
to recycle over 97% of the building materials. The
10,000 slate tiles, brickwork and timber forming the
roof structure will all be salvaged for resale.
How is the work affecting
traffic and car parking?
The six dedicated spaces for patients visiting the
dentist have been relocated to the front of the North
Entrance. There is now no parking in front of H
Block. There is still plenty of parking for patients
on site while staff can use the large new car park
on the site of the former J and K Block and access
the hospital through the back of the North Entrance
when Outpatients moves into Forest Dene.
How are patients being
supported with the changes?
Signage is being improved across the whole of the
site and an information point will be set up outside
the old post room to help people with wayfinding.
What facilities are available
for staff?
A rest area for staff is situated in M Block and is
currently accessible via a coded door. Staff can get
the code by calling ext. 4296.
The staff changing rooms are being remodelled.
Female staff members can use the shower on G2
while male staff can use the shower in the
Dermatology Department.
When will work start on the
nursing home and senior living
accommodation?
entrance of the hospital, and are a key feature in the
Dermatology Unit main entrance hall.
The Quantum Group, the Bournemouth-based
company carrying out these works, plan to start
work from Spring 2015.
How is the history of the site
being marked?
There are a number of ways in which the history of
the site will be marked, some of which can already
be seen. The historic stained glass windows
salvaged from the workhouse that once stood on
the site have been moved from the former main
(l-r) Colin Randell of Stan Randell and Co, Leader of Christchurch Council, Councillor
Ray Nottage, Councillor Margaret Phipps, Dermatology consultants Dr James Hickey and
Dr Ian Pearson, and Phil Randell from Stan Randell and Co. by the stained glass window
at the entrance of the Dermatology Unit.
