Statewide Data Sexually Transmitted Infections Gonorrhea Definition: Gonorrhea (GC) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhea. GC is an infectious disease which is a reportable condition and must be reported to the state by health care providers and laboratories under Alaska Statute. Summary: • Gonorrhea incidence rates among Alaska Native people increased sharply starting in 2009, and appear to be on the decline in the past two years, with a rate of 442.4 per 100,000 persons in 2012. • In 2012, the Alaska Native gonorrhea incidence rate was over sixteen times higher than the rate for nonNative people. • The highest number of reported gonorrhea cases in 2012 were among Alaska Native people aged 15-34 years and 35-54 years. Alaska Native females aged 15-24 experienced the highest number of cases. • Gonorrhea incidence rates vary widely by tribal health region. The Norton Sound, Yukon-Kuskokwim, and Northwest Artic regions saw the highest incidence rates in 2012. The Southeast region had an incidence rate of 49.1 per 100,000 which was lower than the statewide rate of 96.0 per 100,000.
