Newsletter Q4 2014 December 10, 2014 Jingle bells ring, let the last lap begin The year is approaching end and we can already here the bells jingle for Christmas. They also jingle for the start of the last lap in our program. to Petra Söderling from MBB for getting the Digile - Digital Services flag flying high. Check out the Video blogs from SLUSH: http://www.activityblog.fi/category/videot/ Our International evaluation was completed in October and we got very positive feed-back. We are state of the art and in many ways unique in our capability. So GOOD JOB everyone. There were some recommendations that are worth taking up; the most important one is go International! Go to international venues, pilot internationally, draft go to market plans more aggressively. Good news, this is exactly what we have in the plans for 2015. Finally I would like to wish all our partners a relaxing holiday season. I hope you can find the time to recharge as next year is going to be a blast. Roope Takala Focus Area Director Digile – Digital Services Roope.takala@nokia.com During the last quarter we have again had some stellar successes. In this case is almost literally as Vaadin piloted project RUMS with NASA. Also worth is note the ‘Toolbox Energy’ highlighted in this newsletter. It goes without saying we were at a prime place in SLUSH with Eliademy, Wellmo and ProImpact. A special Thanks Snapshot of Results Vaadin to cooperate with NASA Vaadin, an active participant in the DIGILE Digital Services program, has announced cooperation with NASA Ames Research Center. Their SimLabs group has chosen Vaadin’s TouchKit technology as a platform for their Remote User Monitor Station (RUMS) to facilitate certain NASA air traffic research experiment. “We met NASA for the first time at JavaOne already in 2010, where they were looking for technology for 1 building user friendly applications, without a need for installing anything,” says Jurka Rahikkala, COO and Co-Founder of Vaadin. “ Two years later, when the Research Lab (DSRL) of the SimLabs group. RUMS allows authenticated users to monitor an experiment in real-time outside of the DSRL environment, and allows users to download research data from the UASRP server on-demand. The RUMS client features a live display showing the DSRL simulated air traffic in real-time. RUMS also enables user interaction with other components of the UASRP such as a SQL database. In addition, RUMS provides simulation status information as well as graphical representations of statistical measures regarding aircraft separation and traffic collision avoidance data. TouchKit technology was mature enough, NASA build the first iPad pilot with our help. The pilot was a great success, and they decided to build the application with Vaadin and TouchKit.” RUMS is a web portal created to facilitate air traffic research experiments by allowing researchers to interact with the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Research Platform (UASRP) in the Distributed Simulation “We have done extensive research on how to make mobile business application development easy. We couldn’t have imagined better validation and pilot for the technology. NASA’s case gave us belief in TouchKit and made it easy to continue the work at full speed.” Rahikkala summarizes. Jurka Rahikkala jurka@vaadin.com Toolbox Energy launched at Slush Facile Business case within WP 1 has been working on providing small and medium sized businesses within traditional industries tools and support for easier purchasing of digital services. With the help of VTT and User Intelligence Oy, Mobile Brain Bank launched the first commercial interface from this business case at Slush on November 18th, 2014. 2 Toolbox Energy is a media hub and a Showcase portal where selected and validated ICT companies present their offering tailored towards customers in the energy industry. Remarkable cost savings can also be reached when the grid maintenance staff is equipped with tablets and enterprise apps featuring location sensors and video/still cameras. In the first phase the services are categorized under ‘Big Data’, ‘Internet of Things’, and ‘Enterprise Apps’. Toolbox Energy is a global service, planned to be followed by sister sites such as Toolbox Retail, Toolbox Media, etc. For example, data mining and analysis can help electricity companies predict consumption peaks and time peak shaving, hardware sensor and software solutions can estimate wear and tear in turbines, engines, or grid components and thus provide cost savings. Petra Söderling petra@mobilebrainbank.com www.ToolboxEnergy.com Service pilot with Pivo in Oulu The Financial Services Work Package has produced updates, Pivo and Unicom implemented a mobile payment pilot in Oulu, Finland. Through the pilot we learned a great deal about user behaviour and expectations in remote mobile payment transactions. Using the modified version of Pivo (the most popular mobile wallet in Finland) employees of the city were able to pay their lunch in select locations without any additional equipment. After pilot it is expected that similar solutions will be deployed to produce cost savings as there is no need for physical equipment in PoS.
