It is now evident that although reading, writing and arithmetic are necessary, they are not the only skills that we should be teaching our students. New forms of information and communication technology are rapidly generating new literacies and this change seems to be constant and quick. In order to promote the importance of literacy for all family members, as well as the various types of literacy, Family Literacy Day was established in Canada in 1999. According to the ABC Life Literacy Canada website, “Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family”. In order to promote and celebrate Family Literacy Day there are several events organized across the GTA. For more information and for activities that you can use to promote literacy in your family please visit http:// abclifeliteracy.ca/fld/events/. page 2 HOW WAS THE CN TOWER BUILT? Have you ever wondered how long it took to build the CN Tower? What factors impacted its design and construction? How is it possible for a 553.33 m-high concrete tower to be a free-standing structure? On Thursday, January 31st the students in Grades 3 to 7 will visit the CN Tower in order to find answers to these questions, and many more, through a graphic novel style video presentation. During their visit, the students will participate in the Science and Technology Program Understanding Structures and Mechanisms, Form and Function, and will explore the importance of form, function, strength, and stability to a structure’s design. Furthermore, the children will have the opportunity to enjoy the CN Tower, as well as the breathtaking view of Toronto from above. Students are expected to be dressed in full formal uniform, and to bring their own lunches and snacks for this trip. The picture is taken from www.library.thinkquest.org CONGRATULATIONS!
