The NYUAD Community Programs NYU Abu Dhabi Summer Academy The Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Program Job Title: Academic Fellow Appointment type: Full-time (12-mos.); Academic Proposed start date: June 1, 2014 Location: This position is located in Abu Dhabi, UAE Program Overview: NYU and NYUAD currently operate two major community outreach programs. The Sheikh Mohamed Scholars Program (“SMSP”), established in 2008, is a coeducational program that offers a select cohort of talented university students unique access to specially designed courses, lectures, leadership experiences over the course of the academic year, and networking, graduate school opportunities and scholarships following graduation from the program. It conducts a competitive annual selection process and accepts Scholars from among the most outstanding students at the three national UAE universities: Zayed University, the United Arab Emirates University, and Higher Colleges of Technology. The Scholars Program has been developed in close consultation with the Abu Dhabi Education Council, participating universities, and New York University Abu Dhabi. The SMSP offers courses and enrichment programs that scholars take in addition to their own courses of study at their home institutions. The four SMSP courses are: one principal academic class (Supreme Court and the Religious Clause OR American Foreign Policy), Critical Thinking and Persuasive Writing, and Leadership Development and Public Speaking. The NYUAD Summer Academy, launched in 2011, is a coeducational college preparatory program designed to enhance the academic profile of highly motivated Emirati high school students from public and private high schools in Abu Dhabi who are about to start their 11th year. The program features intensive instruction in Critical Writing and Thinking, Mathematical Reasoning, Test Preparation, and Leadership Development and Public Speaking over the course of two summers, an intervening academic year, and a final semester in the fall of their 12th year. Each summer, students receive approximately three weeks of daily instruction at the NYUAD campus before traveling to Florence, Italy (1st summer) and New York City (2nd summer) for approximately ten days of classes and cross-cultural experiences. Position Summary: The NYUAD Community Programs seek a motivated and experienced individual to provide academic support to the high-school- and college-age students who are studying in the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Program and the NYUAD Summer Academy. This individual will reside in Abu Dhabi year-round and serve as an instructor, academic coach, and resource in the following ways: leading recitation and enrichment sessions, meeting one-on-one with students, and accompanying the SMSP and Summer Academy students on international trips. Working closely with the Academic Director, lead faculty, and program staff, the SMSP/SA Academic Fellow will work to ensure the academic success of all enrolled students, and, when requested, alumni. Responsibilities: During the academic year, in close collaboration with the Faculty and Assistant Instructors: • • • • • • • • Lead Critical Thinking and Writing class recitation sessions once per week for two sections of Summer Academy high school students (one 11th grade and one 12th grade) enrolled at the Military High School throughout the academic year Teach Critical Thinking and Writing to one section of tenth-grade students once per week at the Military High School Serve as lead liaison with students in the preparation of applications to college and/or graduate school, meeting one-on-one with students to assist in the preparation of their personal statements, and working closely with the Academic Director and staff to ensure timely submission and receipt of materials Serve as Teaching Assistant for the “What Makes a Great Leader?” Course Meet individually with SMSP Scholars and/or SA students in need of assistance with their written assignments Conduct workshops on reading, writing, and other skills as necessary for SA students and/or SMSP Scholars Assist in grading Finalists’ writing exercise papers submitted during SA and SMSP Selection Days Proctor practice standardized exams to SA students throughout the year and provide administrative support to SAT Tutors for pre- and post-test instruction. During the academic year, in close collaboration with the SMSP/SA Administrative Team: • A minimum of eight hours per week are expected for in-office administrative support; projects to be assigned as necessary. While the Summer Academy is in session, in close collaboration with the Faculty for Critical Thinking and Writing: • • • • • • • • • • • Serve as Teaching Assistant for the Leadership Development & Public Speaking course Meet individually with students during study hall, meals, breaks, and in the evenings to assist with reading and homework assignments Advise students on the development of individualized college application plans, in conjunction with Summer Academy and NYUAD admissions staff Assist instructors in class with group work and with judging presentations, as necessary Assist chaperones with supervision of students during co-curricular activities in Abu Dhabi and at a designated global site (Florence, Italy or New York) Requirements: Master’s degree in TESOL, international education, or other related field Willingness to live and work in Abu Dhabi Experience teaching high school- and/or college-age students in a relevant discipline (e.g. English, writing, critical thinking, etc.) Interest or experience working in a multi-cultural, collaborative environment Outstanding interpersonal skills Ability to supervise high school or college students in a co-curricular setting Salary: A competitive salary and benefit package (including stipends for housing and transportation, health insurance, and travel) will be offered in addition to salary.
