From: ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Ministry of Presidential Affairs Corniche Road Abu Dhabi P.O. Box 280 United Arab Emirates Fax: 00 971 2 622 2228 Email: ihtimam@mopa.ae Date: ______________ Your Highness, I am deeply concerned about the case of Dr Mahmoud al-Jaidah, who has been on trial at the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi since November 4, 2013. According to reports, Dr alJaidah has been ill-treated in prison and is being denied privileges granted to other prisoners. I am worried that Dr al-Jaidah is facing an unfair trial in the United Arab Emirates and that, if he is convicted, he will have no right of appeal under UAE law. In this connection I would like to point out that, under international human rights law, everyone convicted of a criminal offence has the right to have the conviction and sentence reviewed by a higher tribunal. Therefore I am writing to you to appeal for the immediate release of Dr Mahmoud al-Jaidah if he has been imprisoned solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of association, which appears to be the case. At the same time, I wish to call for the instigation of an immediate and impartial investigation into allegations that Dr al-Jaidah has been tortured and otherwise ill-treated and for those found responsible to be brought to justice, in accordance with international fair trial standards. Lastly, but equally important, I ask for Dr al-Jaidah to be granted immediate access to his lawyer and to his family. As I am sure you know, there is worldwide concern about this case and I most earnestly hope that you will take the necessary action on my requests. Thank you for your understanding. Yours very sincerely and respectfully, Copies to: - Vice-President and Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid al-Maktoum, Dubai - Ambassade des Emirats Arabes Unis, Muri/Berne, Switzerland From: ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince Court Bainunah Street Abu Dhabi P.O.
