Spotlight on Cambridge Manufacturing - Event Supports Local Firms
Key Message: Business As Usual is Not an Option
Cambridge, Ontario. November 21, 2012… Cambridge is known for manufacturing – it’s the lifeblood
of our economy. While the convergence of technology and innovation here has given our local
manufacturers a competitive edge in the global marketplace, partnerships and working together will
continue to keep us strong.
“In a world of rapidly changing technologies and a shifting marketplace, there’s no easy answer but
better systems, products, processes, and business is the goal,” says Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig
whose team is leading the charge to keep the dialogue going.
The City of Cambridge will host a ‘Spotlight on Cambridge Manufacturing’ on Monday, November 26th
at 7:30am at City Hall (see www.cambridge.ca/events for registration details). The event is in
partnership with key organizations that support the manufacturing sector and its business
development.
Jayson Myers (left), President and CEO of the Canadian Manufacturers and
Exporters CME), will deliver keynote remarks that focus on "The Future of
Ontario Manufacturing: Surviving & Thriving in a Reset Economy".
“I'll look at what has fundamentally changed for manufacturers as a result of
the recession and recovery, and the current and future challenges and
opportunities for Ontario manufacturers,” says Myers who contends that
business as usual is not an option anymore.” Myers is a well-known economic
commentator, and is widely published in the fields of Canadian and
international economics, technological and industrial change. He is tapped in
and serves on special advisory councils to the Minister for International Trade,
the Minister of Industry, Immigration Canada, Human Resources Development
Canada, and the Canadian Border Services Agency.
Guests of the event will also hear from Carol Simpson (left) who is the Executive
Director of the Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin. Her
organization has just completed a Manufacturing Workforce Study for the
region. She’ll provide a sneak peak of the report.
“Manufacturing businesses provide the largest amount of jobs in the region, currently the labour force
is over 55,000 people. I’ll share important information on the trends affecting manufacturers,” says
Simpson who likes to think outside the box and look at new and innovative ways in which the
community can work together to address workforce development challenges.
To further support the subject of work force development, Michael McClements,
P.Eng., (left) Associate Dean of the Schools of Engineering & Information
Technology, Trades and Apprenticeship, Media and Design, Institute of Food
Processing Technology at Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced
Learning, will share information about the new Cambridge campus, programs that
support manufacturing and the strategic research partnerships this number one
ranked college has with business.
If new funding sources are of interest to your business, Sue Castanier (left),
Senior Program Advisor for the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund
(SWODF) within the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation (MEDI),
will be on hand to share details of this newly announced $20 million program.
Designed to support firms, attract investment and create jobs, Castanier shares
the Ministry’s desire is to build a network of support to help companies grow.

You meet the nicest people in Cambridge. It’s a place that understands all about coming together. There is so much more to Cambridge than the beautiful lands
created at the convergence of two rivers or its logistically perfect location in the heart of Ontario’s economic corridor. Cambridge is the coming together of people
from diverse, close-knit and proud communities. The people of Cambridge ‘do the right thing’ by respecting history, family values, a sound work ethic, the arts,
environment and advancement. A young city, Cambridge is a master of balancing the excitement and promise of the new with the historical significance and stability of
the old. A place where coming together is just the start. Uniting together is what sets Cambridge apart. Undiscovered–Cambridge families and entrepreneurs get more
for less, and sacrifice nothing.
