Volunteer Co-ordinator (Recruitment, Training, Retention)
Salary: £22,000 pro rata
16 hours per week
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Operations Manager
Purpose of post
To implement the Volunteer Strategy. To maintain and further develop effective systems for the recruitment,
training and retention of volunteers.
The Role of the Volunteer Co-ordinator
• Researching potential sources of volunteers and arranging recruitment opportunities
• Producing recruitment materials and marketing volunteering opportunities
• Interviewing potential volunteers and screening for suitability
• Checking references and carrying out CRB checks in line with current legislation and Southwark Carers policies
• Co-ordinating and delivering the volunteer training programme and the on-going training and development
of all volunteers, making maximum use of in-house skills and resources
• Induction of volunteers and embedding individuals in the ethos of Southwark Carers
• Supporting staff with the supervision of volunteers
• Developing ways to reward and recognise volunteers
• Dealing with issues raised by or about volunteers
• Maintaining the volunteer database
• Completing administration and supervising volunteers in line with the supervision policy
• Providing professional guidance in order to support the needs of all volunteers to boost retention and provide
a supportive working environment
• Developing a specialism in support planning and taking plans to panel. Disseminating this information in the
form of regular training to carers
• As Southwark Carers is a small team you will be required to contribute to the general running of the
organisation, including taking a lead on additional events and activities as the need arises.
Person Specification
• Experience of caring and of volunteering, and also of managing, training and developing people.
• They will be able to demonstrate empathy with the goals of Southwark Carers and be passionate about
volunteering and delivering cutting-edge carers services.
• They will be personable, good at establishing and maintaining positive relationships with people at all levels
and from all backgrounds, and be able to enthuse and inspire others.
• It is important that candidates have the ability to think strategically and creatively, to plan, organise and
manage; but they must also be conscientious administrators and enjoy working at the grassroots level in
recruiting volunteers and engaging with carers in Southwark.
• They must also be able to cope with multiple demands and stretching targets and to grasp new information
and ideas quickly. They must be ICT literate – including demonstrated proficiency in programmes such as
Microsoft word and spreadsheet and database skills, a knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Filemaker Pro, Final
Cut and Website CMS and social media would be preferable.
• They must be able to work effectively and autonomously.

WORKING HOURS
The hours of work are those necessary to fulfil the requirements of the position. This will involve working unsocial
hours in evenings and at weekends during Southwark Carers activities, peer support sessions or at events, and also
working during the day.
