The Four in Ten Complaints Leaflet and Poster explains what homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are, who is affected by this, what form it can take and what to do about it.

Service users, in particular those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT), who may be at risk of experiencing homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.

Staff working to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care.

Members of Four in Ten LGBT service user group at SLaM designed the information leaflet and poster, with input from the Health Inequalities Research Network (HERON) and SLaM’s Equality and

Human Rights group, Complaints Manager and Patient Information Manager.

Members of Four in Ten LGBT service user group at SLaM talked about negative experiences they and their LGBT friends had encountered while accessing SLaM services. They told us:

 They did not have enough information about what homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia was, and where to go for support.

Those affected by negative comments about their identity didn’t always know that they had experienced homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.

 There was a concern that if they did experience this, that it would not be taken seriously. We hope our information can change this.

The poster and leaflet should be put in a prominent area of your ward/service – notice boards, waiting room, reception areas or in Service User welcome packs or information files.

Challenge all negative comments about people who are LGBT, or thought to be

Place LGBT posters, leaflets, information about groups in public areas for service users

 Find out about local LGBT groups and services which will be useful to service users

 Invite LGBT staff to your team meeting and/or attend a training session about the issues.

Ensure confidentiality of LGBT service users – don’t ‘out’ them in front of others

 Don’t make assumptions about who is LGBT – not all service users are heterosexual!
