Volunteer Role: Events Team Volunteer Support Person Jules Stapleton Barnes, Community Development Worker Role Purpose LGBT Health and Wellbeing aims to offer community members safe and inclusive spaces in which to have fun, meet others and get involved in activities that promote health and wellbeing. With staff and volunteer support and as part of the Events Team, you will arrange these activities, assist with promotion of events and help facilitate the activities, workshops and events themselves. The role requires enthusiasm, energy, initiative and an interest in making a whole variety of activities accessible and fun for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, including those who are particularly marginalised and vulnerable. Specific Tasks Skills and Qualities Needed Meet every 2nd Monday, 6-8pm for Events Team meeting Contribute ideas and suggestions for each quarterly programme of events Help plan and promote each event coordinated by the Community Development Worker (Jules) Help deliver at least one Special Event per quarter Set up & clear away at events (food prep, moving chairs, setting up tables, decorating space, washing dishes) Welcome new people, including answering the door Talk to people and help them feel comfortable and welcome Promote the whole range of LGBT Health and Wellbeing activities and services (in programme) Alert staff to any concerns Uphold safe space Take responsibility for performing role in professional and safe way You must be aged 16yrs+ for this role Out-of-hours availability (evenings and/or weekends) to attend team meetings, training events and contribute to the delivery of the events programme Education/Training o Numerate and literate Experience o Previous experience of organising events an advantage o Previous experience of PR and working with the media an advantage Knowledge and Technical Skills o Good computer skills, including creating publicity documents (e.g. Microsoft Publisher) o Broad range of ideas for events, suitable for the whole community o Good research skills Personal Skills o Reliability o Ability to work under pressure, to a deadline o Enthusiasm and commitment to creating and delivering a varied, successful and exciting events programme o Good communication skills, both verbally and in writing o Ability to work as part of a team, working closely with your supervisor as well as using own initiative o Confidence to approach and persuade people to become involved and contribute their skills to sessions Commitment Support and Training Approx. 8 hours each month All volunteers are required to attend a 3 hour Induction Training course around the policies and ethos of the organisation and working with our clients Volunteers will be given ongoing individual support and 1:1 Support and Supervision from a named staff member approx. every 6 months Outside these meetings any issues of concern should be raised with your named person or Service Manager Ongoing training opportunities around relevant issues will be offered Reimbursement for public transport costs to and from events Expectations of Volunteers Willingness to abide by LGBT Health and Wellbeing’s Policies Willingness to use support systems Commitment to attend on-going support meetings and training Punctuality Reliability in communication, especially to provide advance notice if unable to attend an event or meeting Location of volunteering This varies. Events will take place in Edinburgh & the Lothians, including at our Centre on Howe Street.
