PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2015 DEADLINE TO APPLY IS FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 2015 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program is a strategic initiative sponsored by the Office of the President, and coordinated by the Office of Diversity & Inclusion in collaboration with the urban community. The goal of the program is to: Foster the interest of under-represented* minority college students by providing meaningful and relevant experience in preparation for employment in the health care industry, preferably at Upstate, and/or for advanced or doctoral degrees related to occupations in an academic health care setting. Attract and retain talented under-represented minority professionals who are from the Syracuse Metropolitan Area. *Under-represented minority college students refer to African American, Native American, and Hispanic/Latino American students. PROGRAM QUALIFICATIONS: Internship candidates must be under-represented minority (African-American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino American) college seniors graduating SPRING 2015, OR currently enrolled graduate students or graduate students graduating SPRING 2015. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, and should be prepared to enter the workforce or currently pursuing advanced degrees. Students must meet the stated qualifications for the position for which they are applying to. Priority will be given to under-represented minority students who are from or graduated from a high school in the Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA - Onondaga, Madison, Cayuga, & Oswego Counties). The program will operate from May – August 2015. Internships are limited to 10 weeks. Start and end dates will be determined by the intern and the host department. Students are expected to be job ready and professional. Students will work a regular weekly schedule not to exceed 40 hours per week, and will be paid a competitive stipend per hour. Housing and transportation are not provided. 1 DUTIES: Selected interns will be assigned to participating Upstate departments of their interest. Participating departments will provide the intern with meaningful work assignments, projects, and mentoring opportunities, based upon their department’s operational needs. Complete description of the project or initiative will be posted here very soon. Great opportunity for business, health administration, public health or related majors. Hospital Administration – Planning (Department code: HAP) Selected intern will assist the hospital in a variety of support roles to include, data and statistical analysis, special projects working with hospital department representatives, and participation on a variety of committees. Additionally, the selected intern will provide staff support for one or two specific projects involving a major hospital programming initiative(s). For a universal experience, the selected intern will rotate through a range of hospital departments based on career interests. Information Management Technology, Hospital Information Systems (IMT) Selected intern will report to the Training Manager to support the education and training plan for the Inpatient Electronic Medical Records (EMR) System – EPIC. Will assist with the development and distribution of training materials, provide office support such as data entry and attending meetings. Attend meetings and help coordinate events. Qualifications include communication skills (written and verbal) to establish rapport with persons of varying educational and cultural backgrounds. Ability to complete assignments with moderate supervision. Ability to collect, organize and analyze data. Intern should be highly confident in their technical abilities in order to make a positive contribution to the team. This is a great opportunity for a technical individual to be exposed to and learn about the new emerging career of healthcare technology. Psychiatric Genetics Lab (Dept. code: PGL) Selected intern will be a self-motivated individual with a background and/or interest in Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Genetics, Biology, Epidemiology or Biostatistics for a summer research position in a Psychiatric Genetics Lab at SUNY Upstate Medical University. The intern will participate in research studies investigating genetic associations of Psychiatric Disorders, particularly Schizophrenia, Autism and Bipolar Disorder. An ideal candidate will be organized, detail oriented and responsible as well as able and willing to learn techniques quickly and apply them independently. 3 Psychiatry (Department code: Psych) Selected intern will assist on National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded project involving phone intervention targeting patients with type 2 diabetes and their partner. Help with a variety of administrative tasks, including creating study fliers, mailing recruitment letters and sending out intervention packets to enrolled patients. Additional tasks include pre- screening patients on the phone and conducting study visits. May assist with additional NIH funded projects. Qualifications include pursuit of psychology or related discipline, computer knowledge, interpersonal & communication skills, and ability to navigate through patient information. Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Outreach & Global Health Education (Dept. code: OMA) Selected intern will assist department staff in their efforts to organize meaningful volunteer, cultural, and academic experiences for medical, nursing and health professions diverse students. Additional tasks include general assistance in carrying out the duties associated with both offices. This individual should enjoy interacting with a diverse population of students and professionals. Should be able to assume responsibility well above that of undergraduate level work or commensurate to professional or graduate school level work, and should be able to carry out assignments independently. The intern will also have the opportunity to engage in various enrichment activities geared toward their desire to work in higher education. Neat opportunity for students seeking careers in higher education, such as student admissions and have an interest in diversity. Public Health and Preventive Medicine (Dept. code: PHPM) The selected intern will provide direct research support to the faculty in the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine on a clinical and behavioral prostate cancer research project: Perform literature searches and synthesis, including general topic searches and specialized database searches. Assist in the preparation of research forms and study protocol. Assist in the preparation of Institutional Review Board forms. Assist in the data entry, coding and analysis. Assist in preparation of manuscripts. Qualifications include excellent oral and written communication skills; competency in Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to work independently; and must be detail-oriented and highly organized. Radiation Safety Office (Department code: RSO) Selected intern will assist in the auditing and review of areas and laboratories either initially applying to use or work with radioactive material or radiation producing equipment for research or for clinical patient care applications. Will assist and learn about the testing and certification of clinical x-ray equipment. Assist with the assignment and collection of individual radiation monitoring devices used by medical center staff.
