How can we design and carry one out involving bacteria? We will know we can answer these questions when we: 1. Know types of variables -independent, dependent, controlled/constantof a controlled experiment and correctly identify each variable in examples. 2. Understands the purpose of the control group in an experiment and can identify the control group in examples. 3. Can design and carry out an experiment including the following parts: question, hypothesis, materials, procedure, and format for data collection. 4. Correctly identify examples of the following types of faulty reasoning: overgeneralization, personal bias, and illogical conclusion. 5. Are able to write a conclusion and reflection for an experiment, avoiding any faulty reasoning. November 16, 2015 Let's revisit our notes from Friday... Open to Page 7 in your INB. Look back at your prediction for the paper airplane experiment. Write your prediction below as a WELL-WRITTEN HYPOTHESIS. _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ November 16, 2015 Let's be sure our Table of Contents is up-to-date. November 16, 2015 1. Control Group -- Group B 2. Independent Variable -- Drink consumed 3. Dependent Variable -- #of stacks of papers stapled 4. What should Smithers' conclusion be? the special juice doesn't work to improve work productivity 5. How could this experiment be improved? 6. What was the initial observation? Slime on the shower Identify the7. Control Group - Side sprayed with water 8. Independent Variable - Spray used to clean (the coconut juice) 9. Dependent Variable - Appearance/amount of Slime 10. What should Homer's conclusion be? Coconut juice does not remove shower slime. November 16, 2015 Identify the11. Control Group - Mice not exposed to radio waves 12. Independent Variable - amount of radio waves they are exposed to 13. Dependent Variable - Strength of mice 14. What should Bart's conclusion be? Although the "radiowaved" mice outperformed the control group, it was by a very small amount - 10%. Therefore, he should probably run further tests. 15. How could Bart's experiment be improved? Identify the16. Control Group - Subject A 17. Independent Variable - powder 18. Dependent Variable - length of itchiness 19. Homework Debrief - Bikini Bottom Experiment Design for the Pool Assignment: WKST November 16, 2015 Krusty Krab Breath Mints 1) Control = the people who received the mint without the secret ingredient - group B 2) Independent variable = secret ingredient in the mint 3) Dependent variable amount of breath odor (bad breath) 4) Mr. Krab's can conclude that the breath mint with the secret ingredient appears to reduce the amount of breath odor more than half the time, but it is not 100% effective. 5) possible placebo effect November 16, 2015 Sponge Bob Clean Pants 6) SpongeBob's pants were not clean. 7) Independent variable = type of laundry soap 8) Dependent variable = amount of dirt left on the pants (or how clean the pants were) 9) Sponge Bob should conclude that Clean-O laundry soap does not appear to be effective in cleaning his pants. November 16, 2015 Squidward's Symphony 10) Independent variable = type of instrument played 11) Dependent variable = number of jellyfish that came 12) The clarinet did seem to attract a large number of jellyfish, but the average number for the 3 trials also matched the average for the guitar. The flute attracted the least number of jellys, but the average for this category is still larger than the control. Music seems to attract the jellys in greater numbers than when no music is played. Therefore, Squidward's hypothesis that the clarinet attracts larger numbers of jelly fish than other instruments is not proven by this experiment alone. 13) Based on the limited amount of information provided, it is difficult to tell if Squidward's results are reliable. The description did not tell how long each break was between trials. Did he leave enough time for the jellyfish to "clear out" of the area? ETC November 16, 2015 Super Bubbles 14) The ads claimed that the Super Bubble solution would produce bubbles that were twice as large as those made with regular soap. 15) Independent variable = type of bubble solution 16) Dependent variable = size of the bubble (diameter) 17) Super Bubble = 15.1 cm Regular Soap = 11.5 cm Patrick should conclude _______. Why??? 18) Valid? Why or why not? November 16, 2015 Millie is trying to figure out if turning on the heater in her pool affects the rate at which bacteria reproduce in the water.
