Communication Media
“El Show De Analeh,”
hosted by Capital alumna
Ana Alfaro, is part of a
unique partnership with
the college’s Academic
Media Technology
Department. Students in
the Communication Media
program help produce
segments for “el show” here
in the college’s TV Studio,
both as part of their in-class
assignments and as an extracurricular activity.
Born and raised in Peru, Henry
Vivar always knew he wanted
a career in broadcasting and
media. After graduating high
school, he was among over
80 applicants who applied for
only 32 available slots in the
Communication program at
the San Marcos University in
Lima, Peru. When he was not
selected, he knew he had to
make other arrangements.
His mother and sister
were living in Glastonbury,
Connecticut, and he set
about preparing to join them,
studying conversational
English for two years. Arriving
in the United States in late
2005, Vivar promptly enrolled
in Capital Community College’s Communication Media
degree program for the Spring 2006 semester.
Henry Vivar understood more English than he could
speak and he remembers remaining quiet most of
the time, feeling as though he barely knew enough to
get by. Despite the language barrier, he did well in his
classes and even found time to volunteer for the
Capital Student News club.
As he advanced through the degree program and
began to feel more at home, Vivar’s media production
skills steadily increased, and he was offered paid work
as a student crew member of a local television show
focusing on issues facing Latinos today.
Henry Vivar didn’t know it at the
time, but his career was officially
launched when he enrolled
in his broadcast television
internship at WUVN-TV Channel
18 Univision. The staff at the
station was so impressed with his work that they offered him
a full-time position when he graduated with his Associate
Degree in Communication Media in May, 2008.
Now in a job he loves — as a Production Assistant for Univision
— Vivar’s responsibilities include recording video on-location
and in the studio and editing programs for national broadcast
such as “La Professor Anacleta.” He spends his “spare time”
pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Hartford’s
School of Communication.

Nondiscriminatory Policy
The Community-Technical College System of the State of Connecticut will not discriminate against any person on the grounds
of race, color, religious creed, sex, age, national origin, ancestry, present or past history of mental disorder, marital status,
genetic information, mental retardation, sexual orientation, learning disability or physical disability, including, but not
limited to, blindness, or prior conviction of crime, unless the provisions of Section 46a-60 (b), 46a-80(b) or 46a-81 (b) of the
Connecticut General Statutes are controlling, or there is a bona fide occupational qualification excluding persons in one of the
above protected groups. With respect to the foregoing, discrimination on the basis of sex shall include sexual harassment as
defined in section 46a-60(8) of the Connecticut General Statutes. Although it is recognized that there are bona fide occupational
qualifications which provide for exception from employment prohibitions, it is understood that these exceptions are to be
applied pursuant to Section 46a-68-33 of the administrative regulations. Further, the system will not discriminate against any
person on the grounds of political beliefs or veteran status. Inquiries regarding this policy should be directed to Rubin Fisher at

Connecticut state law requires that full-time students, or part-time students enrolled
in a degree or certificate program who were born after December 31, 1956 must
have been inoculated against Rubella (German Measles) after they were one year
old; and have been inoculated against Measles also after they were one year old, but
after January 1, 1969. Students must also have received a second inoculation against
Measles, at least one month after the first inoculation, but after 1980. Every student
must present official documentation of immunity prior to registration. Any one of the
following documents presented to the Registrar will be accepted:
Visit www.ccc.commnet.edu/placementtesting.htm
for the most current information (times / dates may change).
Questions, call Hassan Babatunji at (860) 906-5089.
• A physician’s certification of proper immunization
• A blood test certification of immunity to Measles and Rubella
• A physician’s certification that immunization would be harmful to you; or
• A signed statement that immunization is against your religious beliefs.
As of July 1, 2003: The College no longer requires proof of measles and rubella
immunization before enrolling any full-time or matriculating students who
(1) have graduated from Connecticut public or private high schools in 1999 or
after & (2) were not exempt from offering proof of immunization when enrolled in
those schools for religious reasons or because immunizations would be medically
contraindicated.
Veterans
The federal government offers a wide variety of services to
veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs. The
College is approved for training of veterans’ education benefits
by the Connecticut Department of Higher Education.
For additional information or questions, contact the Office of Enrollment Services at
(860) 906-5140.
Please contact Margaret Abraham, Veterans Counselor,
at (860) 906-5044, Room 208, for more information.
Senior Citizens
Special Needs Students
Tuition and some fees, including the registration fee, are waived
for persons 62 years of age or older. Special fees and tuition for
Extension Programs and Courses (“Continuing Education”)
are not waived. Senior citizens currently enrolled will be receiving
registration information in the mail. Seniors new to Capital must fill
out an application at the 2nd floor Welcome Center and then contact
Marilyn Goodman at (860) 906-5123 to complete the application
and registration process.
Students who have special needs or who are disabled must selfidentify and provide documentation of their specific disability to

of the course. This will allow the College to make an effort to
accommodate special needs students. Please call Glaisma PerezSilva, the Student Disability Coordinator, at (860) 906-5042 for
additional assistance.

Credit-Free Courses
Capital Community College reserves the right to cancel courses
with insufficient enrollment. If a course you have registered for is
cancelled, you will be notified by phone and have the option of

credit-free course in the same semester. Refunds take at least 4 to
6 weeks. No refunds are issued for credit-free courses unless you
withdraw 3 business days before the first class meeting, in writing or
in person, to the Office of Continuing Education, 3rd Floor,
950 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06103.
Failure to meet the full payment of this plan on or before
the dates indicated may make the student subject to any or all
of the following: cancellation of registration, denial of transcript
and/or Certificate services and denial of registration for additional
courses at Capital Community College. Additionally, the College will
forward this matter to a collection agency. Once a student has been
deregistered from the College, full payment will be required for

— Tax Credits Available —
— Financial Aid —
Parents sending children to college, or adults continuing their
education, may take advantage of the HOPE Scholarship tax credit
or the Lifetime Learning tax credit. A HOPE tax credit of up to
$1,500 can be claimed for two years for each individual enrolled
at least half-time in higher education at an eligible educational
institution, who has not yet completed his or her first two years
of study. The credit is 100% of the first $1,000 of payments for
qualified tuition and fees, and 50% of the second $1,000. The
Lifetime Learning tax credit is available for vocational, college,
graduate and professional students, for adults who want to
upgrade their job skills or acquire new ones or pursue another
course of study, and even for a student taking one course as long as
it is job-related.
Tax filers can claim a Lifetime Learning credit up to $1,000 20% of the first $5,000 paid in qualified tuition and fees on or after
July 1. A taxpayer can claim only one Lifetime Learning credit per
tax year for the aggregate amount of qualified tuition and fees for
those students in the family for whom no HOPE credit is claimed.
There is no limit, however, on the number of years a taxpayer
may claim the Lifetime Learning tax credit. To take advantage of
the two credits, taxpayers must submit IRS form 8863 with their
federal tax return. For more information, call the IRS Help line at
1-800-829-1040, read IRS publication 970, or visit the Treasury
Department’s website: http://www.irs.ustreas.gov
The College offers a comprehensive financial aid program to assist
students in meeting the cost of attending college. Through scholarships, grants, loans, and on-campus employment opportunities, the
College provides financial support to help with educational expenses.
The College participates in each of the federally-supported financial
aid programs: Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant,
Federal Work-Study, Stafford, and PLUS Loan Programs. The College
also administers State of CT grant programs. Special scholarships from
corporations and individuals are also available.
To become a candidate for financial aid, the student must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To be eligible,
the student must be formally accepted to CCC by the Enrollment Services
Office and enrolled in a degree or eligible certificate program; a citizen
or permanent resident; maintaining satisfactory academic progress;
pursuing a first undergraduate degree; in compliance with draft registration requirements; free from default of any previous student loans or
refund obligation to any federal aid program; and determined to have
financial need. Financial Aid is awarded on a first come basis, therefore,
applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. The priority
deadline date for all students is December 1, 2008. Please note
that late financial aid applicants are expected to be prepared to pay
tuition, fees and book expenses at the time of registration. For more

— Learning Communities Spring 2009 —
New Student? Get off to a powerful start! For a boost toward rapid completion of your non-credit course
requirements, join a Learning Community. A Learning Community links two or three courses and offers
students the opportunity to learn in an interactive, interdisciplinary environment. Tutoring support,
referred to as Power Hours, is an integral component of the Learning Communities model.
This fall, each Learning Community covers two sides of the coin: Reading and Writing. Moving between
the positions of reader and writer, students will explore written texts and then write to reflect on what
they read, and read to inform what they write.
