@ CAPITAL YO U R G U I D E TO E D U C AT I O N AT C A P I TA L CO M M U N I T Y CO L L E G E SPRING 2009 SCHEDULE BOOK for CREDIT COURSES — STUDE N T S P OT L I G H T — Communication Media “El Show De Analeh,” hosted by Capital alumna Ana Alfaro, is part of a unique partnership with the college’s Academic Media Technology Department. Students in the Communication Media program help produce segments for “el show” here in the college’s TV Studio, both as part of their in-class assignments and as an extracurricular activity. Born and raised in Peru, Henry Vivar always knew he wanted a career in broadcasting and media. After graduating high school, he was among over 80 applicants who applied for only 32 available slots in the Communication program at the San Marcos University in Lima, Peru. When he was not selected, he knew he had to make other arrangements. His mother and sister were living in Glastonbury, Connecticut, and he set about preparing to join them, studying conversational English for two years. Arriving in the United States in late 2005, Vivar promptly enrolled in Capital Community College’s Communication Media degree program for the Spring 2006 semester. Henry Vivar understood more English than he could speak and he remembers remaining quiet most of the time, feeling as though he barely knew enough to get by. Despite the language barrier, he did well in his classes and even found time to volunteer for the Capital Student News club. As he advanced through the degree program and began to feel more at home, Vivar’s media production skills steadily increased, and he was offered paid work as a student crew member of a local television show focusing on issues facing Latinos today. Henry Vivar didn’t know it at the time, but his career was officially launched when he enrolled in his broadcast television internship at WUVN-TV Channel 18 Univision. The staff at the station was so impressed with his work that they offered him a full-time position when he graduated with his Associate Degree in Communication Media in May, 2008. Now in a job he loves — as a Production Assistant for Univision — Vivar’s responsibilities include recording video on-location and in the studio and editing programs for national broadcast such as “La Professor Anacleta.” He spends his “spare time” pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Hartford’s School of Communication. To be considered for an exception to this policy due to extenuating circumstances, a written request, accompanied by supporting documents can be made to the Dean of Student Services. To utilize the installment plan students must be registered for six or more credits, or for an Extension Course costing a total of at least $690. The initial payment will include all fees, twenty-five dollar ($25) installment plan fee, and one-third of student’s total tuition or Extension Course Fee, see schedule below. If students need to be deregistered, the Business Office will provide the Registrar with a list of names and in seven days they will either resolve the matter or de-register the student. Credit-Free Courses Capital Community College reserves the right to cancel courses with insufficient enrollment. If a course you have registered for is cancelled, you will be notified by phone and have the option of receiving a full refund of fees or applying your course fee to another credit-free course in the same semester. Refunds take at least 4 to 6 weeks. No refunds are issued for credit-free courses unless you withdraw 3 business days before the first class meeting, in writing or in person, to the Office of Continuing Education, 3rd Floor, 950 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06103. Failure to meet the full payment of this plan on or before the dates indicated may make the student subject to any or all of the following: cancellation of registration, denial of transcript and/or Certificate services and denial of registration for additional courses at Capital Community College. Additionally, the College will forward this matter to a collection agency. Once a student has been deregistered from the College, full payment will be required for reinstatement. 9 — Tax Credits Available — — Financial Aid — Parents sending children to college, or adults continuing their education, may take advantage of the HOPE Scholarship tax credit or the Lifetime Learning tax credit. A HOPE tax credit of up to $1,500 can be claimed for two years for each individual enrolled at least half-time in higher education at an eligible educational institution, who has not yet completed his or her first two years of study. The credit is 100% of the first $1,000 of payments for qualified tuition and fees, and 50% of the second $1,000. The Lifetime Learning tax credit is available for vocational, college, graduate and professional students, for adults who want to upgrade their job skills or acquire new ones or pursue another course of study, and even for a student taking one course as long as it is job-related. Tax filers can claim a Lifetime Learning credit up to $1,000 20% of the first $5,000 paid in qualified tuition and fees on or after July 1. A taxpayer can claim only one Lifetime Learning credit per tax year for the aggregate amount of qualified tuition and fees for those students in the family for whom no HOPE credit is claimed. There is no limit, however, on the number of years a taxpayer may claim the Lifetime Learning tax credit. To take advantage of the two credits, taxpayers must submit IRS form 8863 with their federal tax return. For more information, call the IRS Help line at 1-800-829-1040, read IRS publication 970, or visit the Treasury Department’s website: http://www.irs.ustreas.gov The College offers a comprehensive financial aid program to assist students in meeting the cost of attending college. Get off to a powerful start! For a boost toward rapid completion of your non-credit course requirements, join a Learning Community. A Learning Community links two or three courses and offers students the opportunity to learn in an interactive, interdisciplinary environment. Tutoring support, referred to as Power Hours, is an integral component of the Learning Communities model. This fall, each Learning Community covers two sides of the coin: Reading and Writing. Moving between the positions of reader and writer, students will explore written texts and then write to reflect on what they read, and read to inform what they write.
