INTENT & MISSION Outreach and Charity: Catholic Schools are called to reach out to the hurting, the poor and the vulnerable in our midst in concrete acts of charity. Just as the Gospel tells us our lives will be judged by our response to the “least of these,” so too our school should be measured by our help for the hungry, the homeless, the troubled, and the alienated in our own community and beyond. § Our service program responds to the Catholic Social Teaching theme of the Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable as we serve and advocate for those in need. § We encourage a wide array of partnerships with local, national and global non-profits and churches. § Students will commit to collaborative work with non-profits and use their talents to produce positive social change in the world in accord with the Gospel mission. § Students will develop a sense of stewardship for humanity and the resources that sustain us. § Students will serve a minimum of 25 hours per school year. Works of love directed to one’s neighbor are the most perfect external manifestation of the interior grace of the Spirit...” ~Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium Service Definition and Criteria Service Hours With the mission to educate our students in wholeness of mind, body, and spirit, we offer our students orientation about the service requirement. They attend an annual “Service Fair” to meet with mentors and volunteers from different non-profit organizations in our community. Service hours will be collected twice a year, the Monday before Thanksgiving break and on April 15th. Students may turn in completed service hour forms to the CBSL office where a record is kept for grading purposes. “Be doers of the Word, not just hearers.” James 1:22-27 § Service is defined as an activity that is supervised by an adult, other than a relative, and over 25 hours each school year. § Service must be completed outside of class time and at a non-profit organization with a 501c3 tax exemption code. § All school-related service work (sports teams, teacher projects, etc.) must seek and receive prior approval from the Service Coordinators.
