INTENT & MISSION
Outreach and Charity: Catholic Schools are
called to reach out to the hurting, the poor
and the vulnerable in our midst in concrete
acts of charity. Just as the Gospel tells us
our lives will be judged by our response to
the “least of these,” so too our school should
be measured by our help for the hungry, the
homeless, the troubled, and the alienated in
our own community and beyond.
§ Our service program responds to the
Catholic Social Teaching theme of the
Preferential Option for the Poor and
Vulnerable as we serve and advocate for
those in need.
§ We encourage a wide array of partnerships
with local, national and global non-profits and
churches.
§ Students will commit to collaborative work
with non-profits and use their talents to
produce positive social change in the world
in accord with the Gospel mission.
§ Students will develop a sense of
stewardship for humanity and the resources
that sustain us.
§ Students will serve a minimum of 25 hours
per school year.
Works of love directed to one’s neighbor are the
most perfect external manifestation of the interior
grace of the Spirit...”
~Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium
Service Definition and Criteria
Service Hours
With the mission to educate our students in
wholeness of mind, body, and spirit, we offer
our students orientation about the service
requirement. They attend an annual “Service
Fair” to meet with mentors and volunteers
from different non-profit organizations in our
community.
Service hours will be collected twice a year, the
Monday before Thanksgiving break and on
April 15th. Students may turn in completed
service hour forms to the CBSL office where a
record is kept for grading purposes.
“Be doers of the Word,
not just hearers.”
James 1:22-27
§ Service is defined as an activity that is
supervised by an adult, other than a relative,
and over 25 hours each school year.

time and at a non-profit organization with a
501c3 tax exemption code.

FRESHMEN YEAR:
Students will be introduced to service
opportunities in their community and select
a service site.
SOPHOMORE YEAR:
Students will identify two social issues and
use their God given talents to aid a nonprofit addressing their chosen issue.
JUNIOR YEAR:
Students will identify one or two agencies
in which to serve, will attend seminars on
social issues and begin research in an
area where they wish to make an impact.
They will establish a relationship with a
community mentor to create a proposal for
the Service Project for senior year.
SENIOR YEAR:
The Service Project at the senior level goes
beyond volunteerism and positively impacts
a pressing social need. It culminates in a
presentation made to a panel of business,
educational and non-profit members and
demonstrates the student’s mastery of the
school-wide learning expectations.
GRADING PROCEDURE
Service must be pre-approved by the Theology teacher on a provided service hour form.
Students must complete the form and submit forms to the Service Coordinator’s box in the
CBSL Office as they acquire them. Hours are completed by mid April.

THE GRADING IS AS FOLLOWS:
25+ = A
20-24 = B
15-19 = C
10-14= D

§ A maximum of 5 hours annually are
accepted for donation drives sponsored
by our school.
§ Following the mid-April due date, a day
of service reflection takes place in the
Theology classes.
§ The Service Coordinator prepares a
permanent service file maintained by the
school for one year after the student’s
graduation.
* Failing grades are subject to the late
policy found in the Cardinal Guide, which
gradually increases the hour requirement
based on the turn in date of the tardy hours.
§ Completion of Service each school year
is a graduation requirement.
§ Current Junior students who are
delinquent in service hours must meet with
the service coordinator to set up a plan to
make up missing hours prior to Senior year.

the overall service policy.
