1. Radar overview
• Radar: acronym taken from RA dio D etection
A nd R anging. A radar transmits and receives electromagnetic energy as radio waves to detect and estimate distance to and/or velocity of an object.
What is Ground Based Radar?
• Detection device for human walkers, crawlers and runners
• FMCW- Frequency Modulated Constant Wave, low power, hi-resolution
(Pulse-Doppler – not in security application :
R3D , R5D)
• Ka band (35 GHz) small targets, hi-resolution
TTM- Target Track Message
• Acquiring a target, 3-5 seconds, 3-5 repeated
“hits” on the moving object
• Provides target Lat/Long, Heading, Speed, ID #
Why Use Radar, Benefits
• Wide area surveillance detection device
• Covers ROI every second, Persistent Surveillance Detection device to create Alarm Notifications
• Provides early detection to react to and interdict the threat
• Allows CONOPS of interdicting and early response to threat
• Creates virtual perimeter
• Less effected by atmospheric conditions
CONOPS = concept of operation

When is a FLIR Ground Based Radars is the right commercial security solution
• The terrain is flat, open, and clear of dense vegetation
• There is line-of-site to the desired perimeter.
• The camera is co-located with the radar
Some Wrong GBR Ideas
• Four cameras configured with one radar
• Camera not installed at radar location
• Mount radar on top of building or tower
• Long narrow ROI

Right #1
Right #2
Right #3, multiple short range radars
Georeferencing
Working with Legacy system VMS
(Video Management System)
• Use analog video to compatible encoder
• Alarm Notifications via contact closure
• Use Alarm Monitor Time/Date info to access
VMS recorded video of incident.
5. Candidate Applications
• Airports
• Solar farms
• Oil/Gas production facilities
• Power plants
• Still water ports
• Railways
FLIR strengths
• Fastest delivery in the industry
• Variety of system solutions to meet budget challenges,
• Single source, all FLIR manufactured hardware solution
• Faster and lower cost of support and maintenance
• Benefits of a global distribution
