strong value system.
Mission
To achieve our objectives in an environment of creativity,
growth and commitment towards trainees, as well as towards
professional ethics, Indian ethos and society at large.
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a premier
institute of Social Work in India. It was established in 1936
and was recognized as deemed University by the University
Grants Commission (UGC) of India in the year 1964. The
vision of the institute is to be an institution of excellence in
higher education that continually responds to the changing
social realities through the development and application
of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred and
ecologically sustainable society that promotes and protects
the dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for
all, with special emphasis on marginalished and vulnerable
groups.
In December 2011, Tata Institute of Social Sciences set up
the School of Vocational Education (SVE). It aims to provide
immediate and definite interventions to improve the lives of
the disadvantaged and marginalished youth, especially those
who are excluded by the formal school education system,
through appropriate vocational training programmes. The
training program are inclusive in nature and structured in
a way to facilitate vertical movement of the organized and
unorganized labor. It facilitiates the participation creating an
ecosystem that would bring back the dignity of labor for
blue collar streams of work and create sustainable sources of
income for the marginalished youth in the country.
Concept
The approach adopted by TISS-SVE is called the Work
Integrated Training programme (WITP). This Vocational
Educational Programme is being implemented for the first
time in India with a focus on job specific skills rather than
providing only a broad based education. The aim is to enable
the students to learn the skill by engaging in on-the-job
training at real shop floor of the industry/company along
with classroom theoretical training. Though this ‘Earn while
you Learn’ approach model, the trainee may also earn a
modest stipend during on-the-job duration of the course.
Although, this is not mandatory for any institution, TISSSVE strongly encourages the training partners to adopt this
practice.
TISS-SVE Model of Vocational Education
is a work integrated training which include on-the-job
training (practical) for 4 to 5 days a week and 1 day of
theory training. The courses also include generic models for
overall development of the candidate.
1. Bachelors of Vocational Education
Under the Work integrated Training Programme, TIS-SVE offers courses beginning with ‘Diploma course’ and leading to
‘Bachelor of Vocational Degree’ (B.Voc). Every individual level/year is a standalone certification recognized and awarded
by TISS as a deemed university. The target group for such
courses is largely marginalized youth who are seeking nonformal educational methods to enhance earning capabilities
and thereby improve livelihood conditions. It follows the
progression and eligibility as elaborated in the chart below.

Course Structure
The Vocational course is a three year program consists a combination of
Practical, Theory and Generic (provided by TISS) courses. The three year
program will be divided into 6 semesters; 2 semesters per year. 1st year will
be a Diploma, 2nd year will be Advance Diploma & 3rd year will be a Degree.
The program is a work integrated training which include on-the-job training
(practical) for 4 to 5 days a week and 1 day of theory training. The courses also
include generic module for overall development of the candidate. The B.Voc
Degree program is designed as per the UGC guidelines. The objective of the
course is to provide immediate and definite interventions to improve the lives
of the disadvantaged and marginalized youth, especially who are excluded
by the formal school education system through

It helps organizations upgrade the skills of its blue collar workforce by
accrediting them with a recognized degree/diploma for vocational skills
they already possess. This would lead to higher retention, efficiency and
productivity of workforce.
3.
It helps organizations upgrade the skills of its blue collar workforce and
standardize the same. Employees enrolled as students have to undergro
only one day of theoretical training per week.
4.
Practical training to be impacted by skill knowledge partners is based on
specifically defined learning outcomes.
5.
Third party examination & Certification (by TISS-SVE) brings in the required
rigour and promotes higher standards.
6.
Industries & organizations can sponsor students as part of their CSR
activities.
7.
All traning can be conducted in vernacular language.
8.
This initiative brings course of a reputed Institute like TISS to various
locations across the length and breadth of the country.
