We will now perform a laboratory activity: the famous Frank-Hertz experiment.
In the following pages you will find a review of the experiment and of the expected results:
Now the instructors will demonstrate you the experiment by using a slightly different set-up.
After the demonstration, that will not go into quantitative details, you will be able to actually
take your measurements, in group. Take your data of Current as a function of Voltage and
graph them by using Excel or Logger Pro.
Then, perform the calculations suggested by the previous slide and discuss with the group.
Finally, write down your results and comments.
In particular, try to explain how this experiment is actually helpful in order to make evident
the quantum nature of the interaction between electrons produced by the heated cathode and
the Hg atoms.
