So you want to be an entrepreneur. Do you ever wonder how the Ipod or the Wii were invented? Are you curious how Google Maps, or an unmanned robotic car works? Do you dream of creating the next big idea that could grow into a company like Apple, Google or Facebook? Successful companies and products start with a passionate individual with a vision to solve a problem, and laser focus on what the customer wants. Entrepreneurs often aspire to changing the world by improving how things get done. Some examples: Revolution Foods – great food delivered to school; Better World Books – easy access to text books around the world; YOUTube – instantly sharing video and information with others anywhere. Develop your entrepreneurial skills at Camp BizSmart, Summer Business Academy, held July 28th – August 8th, 2008, at the state of the art technology center, Krause Center for Innovation. Be inspired by entrepreneurs sharing their stories and tips for success. Camp BizSmart is an innovative entrepreneurial and leadership academy that provides students, 7th ‐ 9th grade, experiential real world business training. In a team environment students brainstorm ideas for unique products and plan a business. Fun, meaningful business cases and activities will help them gain the skills required to take an idea from concept through basic budgeting, marketing and sales. By the end of the camp, students will have a better understanding of what it takes to be an entrepreneur, run a business and compete in the global economy. Learn, practice and receive coaching from successful Silicon Valley entrepreneurs concerning real world business skills that will prepare you to launch your new business ideas into the 21st century. Skills: Budgeting, scheduling and goal setting. DAY 4: Is it an I‐Pod yet? Taking a “cool” idea from concept to design – let’s get creative. Skills: Concept design, cost analysis, setting milestones and follow‐up. DAY 5: Will your idea make money? Will someone buy it? Is it what the customer wants? Skills: Accounting and creating marketing materials WEEK 2 – Skills Needed to Launch a Business Venture DAY 1: Who will invest in your company? How to tell your story, share your vision. Skills: Writing and presenting a business plan, networking & communicating ideas. DAY 2: Taking your idea to market. Planning for success. Leading your team. Skills: Negotiation, tracking milestones, problem solving and critical thinking DAY 3: So you want to be an entrepreneur— share your passion, launch your venture Skills: Closing the sale ‐ persuasion, innovative thinking and teamwork DAY 4: How can we do better? Learning from experience. Listening to the customer. Skills: Coaching, brainstorming, and how to benefit from receiving criticism. DAY 5: How to win and lose with grace. The benefit of persistence to pursue dreams. "The flat Earth" Camp BizSmart was founded, designed, and developed by Dr. Michael and Peggy Gibbs. Dr. Michael Gibbs Has over 30 years experience working in the education industry, and in Fortune 500 companies such as General Electric. Dr. Gibbs has taught thousands of executives in the Haas Business School international business MBA program and brings a real time, world view of business and education skills needed for students to compete globally from his work with companies throughout the world. Ms. Peggy Gibbs Has 25 years in non‐profits – creating, managing & raising funds for education, the arts and health initiatives and technology solutions. Most recently, she was Vice President, Business Development, for the award winning social enterprise company, Benetech. Her work with local school districts has brought education programs to students, parents and teachers achieving engaged, learning. Who 7th, 8th, or 9th grade students When and Where 8:30‐4:30PM – Monday ‐Friday July 28 – August 8, 2008 Krause Center for Innovation Foothill College, Los Altos, CA Fast‐paced exercises, coaching and valuable advice from well‐known business leaders. •
Enhance your entrepreneurial spirit, gain real world experience. •
Learn the basics of entrepreneurship, finance, and business plan preparation, presentation & execution. •
Invent a new product, and make a plan to sell it. •
Gain business and communication skills ‐ practice networking and sharing your ideas •
Test your business idea in a business plan competition judged by Silicon Valley business leaders and entrepreneurs. •
Continue your business after the academy with a six month check‐in to share progress with mentors through email exchanges. Cost $750 covers tuition, camp materials, t‐shirt, and DVD Limited scholarships available Registration Competitive application is required.
