to “Drop Everything and Read” before their April meeting.
DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,
As you read this description of last year’s accomplishments, I hope that you smile
as you see the impact of your generosity and realize that it means that everyone
benefits from the Iowa City Public Library. I, my fellow members of the Board of
Directors of the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation, and the Library staff
wholeheartedly thank you for your contributions. They enable the Library to be a
strong, nimble, excellent community center.
It was our pleasure to welcome many of you to the Friends Foundation’s new
signature event hosted in May at the Library. Dan Reed and Brooks Landon, both
Library fans and University of Iowa professors, presented fascinating food for
thought that evening during Looking Forward: The Future, From Fiction to Fact.
Our unique after-hours Family Fun(d) Night in February brought in so many new
friends whose relationship with the Library begins with the fantastic staff in the
Ellen Buchanan Children’s Room. Who will ever forget the joy on the children’s
faces as they joined Cat in the Hat (a costumed Foundation board member!) for a
special storytime?!
We are grateful to you for participating in those events, as well as the third
annual Arts and Crafts Bazaar, Library Links Golf Classic, and unique partnership
with Prairie Lights Books which hosts the Book Gala fundraiser. Many of you are
business owners who generously decided to participate in our growing Corporate Partners program. We appreciate you for investing in the Library’s role in the
community.
The year’s fundraising success story would not be written without the dedicated
volunteers for the Book End used bookstore on the Library’s second floor. Interest
by new volunteers allowed us to open the store on Sundays for the first time. The
store volunteers raised more than $30,000 selling donated materials in the store
and during special sales in the Library meeting rooms.

THE BOOK END
The Book End used bookstore on the second floor of the
Iowa City Public Library connects donated books and
books no longer needed in the Library collection with
eager new readers.
Staffed entirely by volunteers, The Book End generates
funds through store sales and by hosting large book sales
at the Library. When you shop there, you help put new
books on the Library’s shelves and in children’s hands
through the Summer Reading Program!
The Iowa City Public Library celebrated the 35th anniversary
of its volunteer program. Many Book End volunteers were
honored at the annual Volunteer Recognition event.

picking up books from donors’ homes, and organizing

The University of Iowa’s Phi Sigma Pi fraternity helped the
Book End volunteers execute two successful book sales.
MidWestOne Bank held its 9th Annual Book Drive for The
Book End. Throughout the years, they have collected
thousands of books, which were sold to benefit the Library.
Why did you decide to volunteer at the
Iowa City Public Library?
I’ve been a user of this library for many years,
starting with when my children were young.
That made me want to give back, now that I
have time to do so.
