Mount Kilimanjaro/Waterfalls Excursion (1+ hour drive – Machame) Visit the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world! You will walk the lower area just outside the national park gate. Chagga village culture and history. Learn about how the Chagga and Maasai fight with spears, shields, and swords. Local blacksmith who uses ancestral methods to prepare spears and tools Waterfall visit for nice views of Mount Kilimanjaro (if she is not hiding), as well as panoramic views of the Pare Mountains and Moshi town Visit a coffee farm and one of the oldest churches of the area Off to the underground caves which were used by the Chagga to hide during war Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Day Hike (2+ hour drive – Marangu) You will head off early to Marangu gate (1800 m). After registration at the gate you will start hiking via Waterfalls then continue to Mandara Hut (2700 m). On the way your mountain guide will explain about vegetation while setting a comfortable pace for you. The hike is 3 to 5 hours through a fascinating rain forest to Mandara Hut (2700 m). Black and White Colobus monkeys are sometimes seen. Look for a tiny flower called Impatiens Kilimanjaro; endemic to Kilimanjaro. Picnic lunch en route, Optional hike to Maundi Crater (45 min) or rest upon arrival at Mandara Hut. Return to Marangu Gate in the late afternoon. Visit local charities and schools, orphanages, clinics – Recommended! Spend a day checking out a local clinic, school, and orphanage. You will be hosted and guided by a lovely elderly Tanzanian man who will also host you for an amazing lunch in his home. Visit Arusha – craft market, museum, local restaurant (25 min. drive) Spend a day in Arusha, walking the streets and getting a feel for this rapidly growing city which is the hub of tourism in the area. Barter for crafts and curios at the Meru Market Visit a museum of natural history Get that special loved one some Tanzanite jewelery View local shops Local village family meal (walk) – Highly Recommended! Enjoy a morning and lunch with one of our Kikwe village neighbor families, sampling traditional cuisine as well as well known foods such as chicken and rice. You will get a feel for village life and hear stories about the area and what life is like growing up in Kikwe. Arusha National Park (30 min. drive) Safari to our nearby park on the slopes of Mount Meru. A special way to experience the park is to walk with a ranger to view some of the wildlife and large mammals in the area. Snake Park and Camel Ride to Maasai Boma (50 min. drive) Visit a local snake park and clinic in Meserani, near Arusha. It has been set up to inform the public about snakes, and also has a 24 hour clinic to provide anti-venom for people who have been bitten by a poisonous snake. The Snake Park also offer camel rides, a short 15 min. trial, or a two hour round trip to a nearby Maasai boma (extended family home) with a Maasai guide. Mount Meru coffee tour and hike (30 min. drive) First visit the Nkoaranga area where you can see a primary and secondary school, and an old church. Thereafter, walk to the organic coffee nursery (30 min). At the plantation you will get a guided tour with focus on organic coffee production compared to traditional production (about 1 hour). After seeing the plantation, you will walk down to the roasting factory. In the cool garden you will receive a Tanzanian hot lunch. Here you will also get a taste of the coffee seen at the plantation. After lunch you will visit the roasting factory, where coffee is processed from dry beans. Every guest will get a bag of freshly roasted coffee as a gift and it is possible to buy more coffee and other locally made products. Mount Meru Hikes (more than 10 different day trips) There are numerous beautiful treks around the lower forest of Mount Meru (from 3 to 6 hours each). You could have an amazing adventure of 7 days or more on a different trail each day, soaking in the local culture by brushing shoulders with the many Meru people living up the side of the mountain, while viewing amazing greenery and animals of all kinds. All treks are within one hour drive of Dashir. Mount Meru waterfall hike – 5 hours o Large, beautiful waterfall; a steep stretch and possible shallow water Maji ya Chai Usa River Lake Duluti … and many more … Local Tengeru food and clothes market experience (15 min. drive) Visit the busiest local market in the Arusha area (Wed. and Sat.). Local wares, clothes, and food are being sold. It is an adventure just wading through the stalls and literally brushing shoulders with the beautiful Tanzanian people. We can make it more interesting by sending you with a list of items to buy and use the local language of Swahili to do so (of course with the able help of your guide!).
