Doing Business in India
Doing Business in India
The World Bank, IMF, UNCTAD and Goldman Sachs predict the 21st century as the “Asian Century” with
the growth being led by the giant economies of China and India. The financial meltdown in the USA in
2008 and the consequent recession that engulfed the entire developed world has tilted the world
economic order even more in favour of Asia.
The Indian economy has expanded at an average rate of 8% (GDP growth) for the decade of 2000-10. In
terms of Purchasing Power Parity the economy is poised to climb up one step to become the third largest
economy in the world in 2012. The growing economy provides mindboggling opportunities of doing
business in India in all forms; to source from India, to market in India or to invest in India.
Doing Business in India (DBI): An SPJIMR Initiative
S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) is ranked amongst the Top Ten Business Schools
in India. Inaugurated in the year 1981 by the then British Prime Minister Rt. Honourable Margaret
Thatcher, SPJIMR has been at the forefront of creating a new paradigm of management education that
combines rigour and relevance to achieve its twin objectives of “Influencing Practice” and “Promoting
Value Based Growth”.
Over the years SPJIMR has moved from strength to strength to emerge as an institute with a scope wider
than a B-School through innovative pedagogy and market relevant curriculum. In addition to the regular
2-year and 1-year full time MBA programs the wide spectrum of activities at SPJIMR includeDevelopment of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC), Family Managed Business (FMB), Entrepreneurship
Development (ED), Services Sciences Management & Engineering (SSME), Continuing Management
Education (CME).
As the rest of the world becomes more and more interested in the India Story, SPJIMR has developed a
program titled “Doing Business in India”. It is a short customized program for those who wish to know
more about India and understand the dynamics, context, scope and opportunities of the Indian economy.

The Basic Module of Doing Business in India attempts to map the business opportunities from
three angles:
!
India as a market: The consumer markets in India are estimated at about 300 million. This
is equal to the total population of US/EU. These markets are expected to expand further as
the 1.2 billion people of India experience greater purchasing power with higher economic
growth.
!
India as a sourcing partner: A large pool of young, cheap, skilled, English speaking
workforce and the availability of other resources make India a suitable sourcing partner.
With the second largest scientific, technical and executive manpower in the world India is
emerging as manufacturing hub for automobiles and is ideally suited for Business Process
Outsourcing (BPO) and Knowledge Processing Outsourcing (KPO).
!
India as an investment destination: Huge opportunities for physical investment are
opening up as the government and businesses are creating additional capacity in
infrastructure, manufacturing and services. India offers higher return on investments that
are safe as the financial sector comprising of banking, insurance and money & capital
markets is well regulated. Investments in India are considered safe due to its democratic
government that is committed to growth of the economy.
The Special Interest Module. Depending upon the interest of the participants, the course
looks deeper into specific themes e.g. Entrepreneurship, Social Entrepreneurship,
Government Programs, Healthcare, Education, Tourism etc.
