Course Overview:
This course will facilitate students in learning fundamental physical science concepts through lab/research assignments, in class
discussions, and homework. Main concepts covered will include, but not be limited to, natural resources, phase change and heat
transfer, polymers and plastics, electricity, and electricity production. Throughout this year students will gain valuable skills such as
analysis and interpretation of data, problem solving, posing questions and answering them through designing and performing their
own experiments.
Vision of the Successful Student and Core Competencies:
A successful student will be a responsible citizen, who accept and respect everyone in their classroom and community. They
will come to class prepared with necessary materials and a willingness to work.
th
Student will achieve competency in the Connecticut content standards and expected performances for 9 grade physical
science curriculum.
The skills necessary to be successful are based on scientific literacy, numeracy, and inquiry established in the Connecticut
content standards.
Materials and Resources to Support Student Learning:
There are many supplemental materials available in the school and community libraries, and online. Remember when using online
materials it is very important to remember the source and validity of the information, .org, .edu and .gov will generally be the most
reliable.

Evidence of Student Learning:
Homework: Homework is meant to be done outside of class time. This work is imperative as it will back up concepts learned
and/or give background knowledge to ensure students are prepared for the following class. Homework assignments may include
bookwork, readings, worksheets, summarizing review of days lessons and information gathering.
Performance Tasks: Will include but are not limited to Labs and Projects. While the majority of these assignments are in class
work the expectation is that work not completed in class will be completed at home.
Labs: Labs are used to discover and explore content knowledge through gathering and synthesis of data to develop
students understanding.
Projects: Projects are learning activities that will involve research, organization and presentation of content knowledge.
Projects may include a variety of finished products ranging from posters, PowerPoints, brochures, letters, websites,
etc.

Class Work/Class Activity: This is work done during the course of a class period. Activities/assignments may include notetaking, worksheets, group work, debates, and demonstrations. Analysis questions and graphs may be completed at home.
Assessments:
Tests: Tests are summative assessments with the expectation of the students demonstrating their cumulative
understanding of the content knowledge learned per unit.
Quizzes: Quizzes are used to measure a student’s growth and understanding during the course of a unit. Quizzes may be
announced and unannounced
Grading:
Each quarter grade is based on a point system where assignments are given a specific point value which will reflect the importance
of the work and/or the amount of time that should have been spent on it. Student’s final grades will be based on their individual
point total divided by the number of total points available for that term.
40% for test and quizzes (quizzes will be no more than half the value of a test.)
50% for exploration and reinforcement (labs, projects, class work)
10% for homework (worksheets, readings and note taking)
Laboratory Behavior
Laboratory exercises are an integral part of a student’s science experience at SWHS. In order for all students to have a safe and
productive environment to work in, no disruptive behaviors will be tolerated. Students are expected to follow the lab safety
procedures outlined at the beginning of each activity. Failure to do so will result in removal from class and a zero on the lab.
