2012 - Food Finders Food Bank

FOOD FINDERS FOOD
BANK STAFF
I’d like to tell you about a girl named Sarah.
Directors:
Her story is hypothetical – and yet, it’s all
too real.
Katy Bunder, Executive Director
Kier Crites, Director of Community
Relations & Marketing
Tawny Howe, Director of Business
Kim Motuliak, Director of Operations
Cheryl Precious, Director of
Development
Sarah is five years old. Her father drives
a truck, but his hours were cut last year
and he hasn’t been able to make up the
difference. Since her parents can’t afford day care for Sarah and her little brother, her mom has
gone back to work cleaning houses. Still, the income isn’t
enough.
So Sarah is one of 30,000 children in our 16-county
region that go hungry sometimes.
It’s likely you know a child like Sarah without even realizing
it. Indeed, more than one in every five children in mid-north
Indiana is considered “food insecure,” which means the
family can’t always provide enough nutritious food.
Happily, more help than ever is available for families like
Sarah’s, because in 2012, your food bank worked harder
than ever for them. We expanded and streamlined all of
our direct service programs like Mobile Pantries and BackPack. We helped partner food pantries and soup kitchens
distribute more food to meet the growing needs of their
communities. And ultimately, we set another distribution
record: 6.2 million pounds in 2012. That’s an incredible 66%
increase since 2009.
All of this happened because of people like you – our supporters, volunteers, and friends. I hope you’ll read on to
learn how our community came together to help families
like Sarah’s find help and hope.
Sarah’s story is our story. Thank you for helping us tell it.

In 2012, Food Finders Food Bank
distributed more food than ever
through our four programs. Of
course, with growth comes growing pains. A professional study of
our current facility determined
our maximum annual distribution
capacity was about 4.2 million
pounds – needless to say, we’ve
outgrown that by a long shot.

AGENCY PARTNER PROGRAM
SUMMER FOOD SERVICE
PROGRAM
BACKPACK PROGRAM
In the spring, the food ran out a
week before Sarah’s father was expecting his next paycheck. Luckily, the pantry at her local church
was open. They welcomed Sarah
and her dad, and sent them on
their way with enough groceries to
make ends meet until the money
came.
In the summer, when school was
out, so were Sarah’s free school
lunches. Her mom sent her to a
nearby park every weekday,
where she ate a healthy meal,
learned about nutrition, and played
fun games with other area kids.
Once a week, she even got to take
home some groceries.
In the fall, Sarah’s parents found
relief from the school lunches she
was getting again – but sometimes
they struggled to provide enough
on weekends. So Sarah started
receiving a backpack of food at
her school to take home on Friday
afternoon.
Just as the food bank grew, so did
our agency partners. The folks that
run food pantries, soup kitchens,
shelters, after-school programs,
and senior feeding programs
are truly at the core of our work.
These locally-operated institutions
provide free groceries, meals, or
snacks on a regular basis to families
struggling with hunger in their communities. What’s more, it was truly
a labor of love. 82% of our partner
food pantries rely entirely on volunteers to operate.
Agencies pay a “shared maintenance fee” on the food they get
from Food Finders, which helps
offset about 10% of our distribution
and other operating costs.
As it always is, summer was the
toughest time of year for hungry
families in 2012. School lunches
were unavailable, and additional expenses for child care put a
squeeze on already-tight budgets.
Enter Food Finders’ Summer Feeding Program. A unique public-private partnership, the program
combined federal resources provided by the USDA’s Summer Food
Service Program (SFSP) with private support from the Food Bank’s
partners. Every weekday during
the summer, local children ate
a healthy meal, engaged in fun
physical activities, sampled healthy
food, learned about nutrition, and
even took home healthy groceries
once a week.
When school ended in the spring of
2012, the BackPack Program was
providing backpacks full of nutritious food to 3,500 children each
week. When school started up
again in the fall, that number had
grown to 3,800 children receiving
consistent, nutritious food to have
for the weekend,
Sarah’s teacher noticed she wasn’t
always getting enough food at home.
Food Finders offers training and resources to help teachers and administrators identify hungry kids.
On the recommendation of her
teacher, Sarah’s principal got
permission from her mother to
enroll Sarah in the BackPack
Program.
A local church in Sarah’s community
raised money to provide enough
backpacks for 25 children at her
school. Funding partners raised over
$480,000 for the BackPack Program
in 2012.
Each month, Food Finders
carefully inventoried and
delivered enough food for 74
partner sites.
Each week on Wednesday,
a local Rotary club came
to Sarah’s school and filled
donated backpacks with
specially-selected food.
On Friday, Sarah, full of smiles,
picked up her backpack of food
right in her classroom. Parents consistently report a significant impact
on their families: indeed, 85% of
families report that they worry less
about food because of the program, and 93% report that it helps
them afford other necessities.
MOBILE PANTRY
PROGRAM
In the winter, Sarah’s dad caught
pneumonia. He was uninsured, so
his hospital bill wiped out the family’s cash, and they had to move in
with Sarah’s grandma in a small rural town. There was no food pantry
there, so Sarah’s mom picked up
groceries at a Mobile Pantry.
Though our agency partners
worked harder than ever in 2012,
they can’t be everywhere all at
once. Families in some communities – especially those without any
other types of hunger programs
– would have been left behind if
it weren’t for Food Finders’ Mobile
Pantry Program. Across our service
area, mobiles brought food and
household products directly to
families in need. In 2012, hungry
families in our area visited Mobile
Pantries 33,000 times – receiving
enough food for about 32 meals at
each distribution.
