COURSE OBJECTIVES • Learn lab techniques and follow safety procedures • Interpret experiment data and draw complete and concise conclusions • Produce a weekly lab report using WORD, EXCEL, and LOGGER-PRO software with proper lab apparatus for each experiment YOU WILL NEED: 1. The Lab Procedure posted on http://tarpon.tamug.edu/chem117 with additional class notes as discussed by the instructor. 2. A calculator and writing implements 3. PERSONAL SAFETY GLASSES, CLOSED TOE SHOES AND CLOTHING COVERING SKIN FROM NECK TO BELOW THE KNEES MUST BE WORN IN LAB. OLD JEANS ARE RECOMMENDED. 4. A lab apron or lab coat is recommended to cover expensive clothing/uniforms. 5. A copy of OWL Lab Skills from the bookstore. ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS You will be expected to communicate with Blackboard/Elearning for this course. Go to "Howdy Portal" link at http://howdy.tamug.edu/ and log in using your NEO account name and password, then select "E-learning” link. There should be two Chemistry 117 lab courses listed, “CHEM117 Lab Central” (for general documents) and “CHEM117 My Lab Section” (for grades and section specific items). GRADING POLICY 1 A lab score below 60 is considered a failing grade. A numerical score between 0 and 100 will be assigned based on the following criteria (and then converted to traditional corresponding letter grade A (90%), B (80%), C (70%), D (60%), F (<60%). 1. Lab work 50% (reports or data sheets as relevant) 2. Safety Quiz 5% 3. Quizzes 20% 4. OWL work and quizzes 25% 5. The lowest grade from the quizzes, lab reports, and OWL work will be dropped. GENERAL LAB GUIDELINES 1. NO FOOD, DRINK OR TOBACCO PRODUCTS ALLOWED IN LAB! 2. TURN OFF CELL PHONES – any cell phone use during lab must be preapproved by the instructor! 3. Attend lab in proper attire. Bring personal safety goggles and a lab coat (if desired). You will be denied entry if you are wearing tank tops, short-shorts, or flip-flops. 4. Turn in a Lab Work each week for that experiment before you leave the lab, calculations must be included (show work). See the sample lab report for the expected format. 5. Lab Work (report or data sheet) must be turned in by each group, and signed by all members. One three-member group is allowed if there are an odd number of students. 6. DO NOT ATTEND LAB IF YOU ARE SICK! For illness, you should contact the instructor BEFORE lab begins to be excused. If you miss a lab due to illness, you may be allowed to attend another lab that week. DO NOT attend another lab without permission from your instructor. ANY PRESCHEDULED ABSENCES MUST BE PREAPPROVED BY THE INSTRUCTOR IN WRITING TO BE EXCUSED. 7. A make-up lab may be scheduled the last week of classes based upon need. Lab maintenance of instruments and lab ware can be done this week to replace a quiz score. GUIDELINES FOR QUIZZES AND FINAL EXAM Do your OWL assignments. Quizzes and the Final will partly be drawn from pertinent OWL material. Formulas will be provided to aid faulty memories. 2 Knowledge of the general subject matter and overall goal of each lab experiment, but not the detailed calculations or analysis necessary to complete the lab. The Final Exam will cover material completed on prior experiments. You will be expected to understand theory, and be able to do calculations, and analysis. You should understand the procedures performed in a lab.
