DMA 326 TV Sound Design (Spring Semester)

COURSE OBJECTIVE: To provide students with actual experience in audio post production and sound
design on television production. Student will receive instruction in Pro Tools (audio software) and
technical instruction in recording ADR, Foley, Sound Effects and Music Scoring for television
productions.
TEXT:
No textbook required
MATERIALS:
(1) External Hard Drive or Flash Drive (2 GB) for storage and backing up of projects.
(5) CR-R’s for burning digital audio files. $2 approx
(5) DVD-R’s for burning digital audio and video files $10 approx
PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT:
Students will produce an audio score using Pro Tools on Macintosh G4 computers.
Gain experience in digital editing of sound effects, dialogue, foley, walla-walla, and music score.
Learn how to burn Audio and Data CD’s and DVD’s.
Understand terminology associated with digital audio and sound design.
Synchronize Pro Tools to a Quicktime file and a SMPTE lock with a Beta SP deck.
Learn how to use the Ramsa Audio Station
GRADING POLICY: (100 points Total)
Students are responsible for providing the following documents/materials to their instructor as well as
passing Ramsa Board Test.
(15pts) Ramsa Audio Station Board Test – pass the Ramsa Board Test for ADR and music recording.
(10pts) Mac os X Test- written multiple choice test identifying the Mac osX interface.
(10pts) Pro Tools Test - written multiple choice test identifying the Pro Tools interface.
(10pts) ADR Project – participate in the process of recording ADR.
(10pts) Sound Effects Project – participate in the process of recording foely and sound effects.
(10pts) Dialogue Project – participate in the process of recording dialogue.
(10pts) Quicktime Audio Sync – participate in the process of syncing a Quicktime file in Pro Tools.
(25pts) Professional Image – attending class sessions on time and performing as a professional in class.

A = 99-92%
A- = 91-90%
B+ = 89-88%
B = 87-82%
B- = 81-80%
C+ = 79-78%
C = 77-72%
C- = 71-70%
D+ = 69-68%
D = 67-60%
F = 59% -
STUDENT OUTCOMES – by the end of the course, each student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of ProTools software for recording, editing, and sync.
2. Properly operate the Ramsa Station for ADR, foley, sound effects, walla-walla, and music scoring.
3. Properly direct ADR, foley, and walla-walla sessions with actors and foley artists.
4. Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the MAC osX.
5. Properly burn a media and Data CD and DVD.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of terminology associated with digital audio and sound design.

Consumption of food and beverages in our classroom and production labs is NOT allowed at any
time. Food and beverages must be stored out of sight for consumption outside of class and labs.
NO CELL PHONES!
Before entering the classroom each day, make sure that your cell phone is turned OFF so that any
incoming calls will not disturb the class or cause you to be pulled away from the class.
