Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary’s,
would like to share with you one of the reasons why I love Lent. Lent reminds
me to live for God and for others. Lent reminds me of the secret of happiness. I
love Lent because it reminds me to stop concentrating on myself, my needs, my
wants and my desires and to focus on the objects of real Charity, God and neighbor.
The naval gazer never sees the stars. The most unhappy people in the world are
those concentrated on the self.

ow many neuroses and mental unbalances would be cured if only people went out
of themselves to help others in greater need
than themselves. Many of our needs are real
but many more are imagined and ephemeral,
and seem bigger the more self-centered and
isolated we become.
here is a story of a rich Lady who went to
see a famous psychiatrist. After listening
to her for some time, he asked her to get up off
the couch, come over to the window and look
out. Down below, across the street, she saw
homeless men and women in line waiting for a
bowl of soup. The famous psychiatrist recommended that she volunteer three days a week.
She followed his advice and never needed
therapy again. The fact is, going out of ourselves to help others not only makes them
happy, it makes us happy.
ven the smallest true act of charity, although tainted with our own self-interest,
can still make us happy. The reality is—it is
better to help than to be helped. Lent helps us
make that long journey out of ourselves to live

for God in others. That’s what prayer, penance
and almsgiving are all about. They give us a
taste of happiness and eternal joys to come.
lmsgiving is especially important. It is obligatory because everything we have received in life is only borrowed never possessed. Or as St. Augustine stated so long
ago—anything we have in excess really belongs
to the poor. What do we have in excess? Some
have money, others don’t. Yet God never is
outdone in generosity. The widow’s mite was
lauded by the Lord just before His death. She
gave all she had to live on. He gave all for us,
giving His life so we might live anew. Can He
expect anything less from us? The alms of a
humble contrite heart. The alms of a cheerful,
generous, sharing spirit.
love Lent because it forces me to admit that
I have not truly lived for others, which in
itself is a new beginning, a new opening to
God.

Queridad Familias y Amigos de Santa Margarita Maria,
M
e gustaría compartir con ustedes una de las razones por las que me encanta
la Cuaresma. Cuaresma me recuerda a vivir para Dios y para los demás.
Cuaresma me recuerda el secreto de la felicidad. Me encanta la Cuaresma porque
me recuerda a dejar de concentrarse en mí mismo, mis necesidades, mis deseos, mis
necesidades y de centrarme en los objetos de la verdadera caridad, Dios y al prójimo. El contemplador naval nunca ve las estrellas. Las personas más infelices en el
mundo son los que se concentraron en sí mismos.
¿Cuántos neurosis y desequilibrios
mentales se curaría si sólo las personas
salieran de sí mismos para ayudar a
otros en necesidades mayores que ellos
mismos. Muchas de nuestras necesidades son más reales pero muchas son
imaginarias y efímeros, y parece más
grande es el más egocéntrico y aislados
que nos convertimos.
Hay una historia de una rica dama que
fue a ver a un famoso psiquiatra. Después de escuchar a ella por algún tiempo, él le pidió que se levantara del sofá,
ven a la ventana y mirar hacia fuera.
Más abajo, en la calle, vio a hombres y
mujeres sin hogar en línea de espera por
un plato de sopa. El famoso psiquiatra
le recomendó que fuese voluntaria tres
días a la semana. Ella siguió su consejo
y nunca necesitó terapia de nuevo. El
hecho es, salir de nosotros mismos para
ayudar a otros no sólo los hace felices,
nos hace felices también.
Incluso el más pequeño acto de verdadera caridad, aunque teñida de nuestro
propio interés, todavía puede hacernos
felices. La realidad es que es mejor para
ayudar a que se les ayude. Cuaresma
nos ayuda a tomar ese largo viaje fuera
de nosotros mismos para vivir para Dios
en los demás. Eso es lo que la oración, la
penitencia y la limosna se trata. Ellos
nos dan una idea de la felicidad y alegrías eternas por venir.
La limosna es especialmente importante. Es obligatorio porque todo lo que hemos recibido en la vida sólo es prestado
nunca propio. O, como San Agustín declaró hace mucho tiempo, cualquier cosa que tenemos en exceso realmente
pertenece a los pobres. ¿Qué tenemos
en exceso? ¿Algunos tienen dinero?
Otros no lo hacen. Sin embargo, Dios
nunca se deja ganar en generosidad. El
obolo de la viuda fue alabado por el Señor poco antes de su muerte. Ella dio
todo lo que tenía para vivir. Él lo dio todo por nosotros, dando su vida para que
podamos vivir de nuevo. ¿Puede esperar
nada menos de nosotros? Las limosnas
de un corazón humilde y contrito. Las
limosnas de un alegre, generoso, espíritu de compartir.
Me encanta la Cuaresma porque me
obliga a admitir que no he vivido realmente por los demás, que en sí mismo
es un nuevo comienzo, una nueva apertura a Dios.

Our Elect who are preparing for
Baptism at Easter, will take part in
the last of three special rites called
the “Scrutinies” at the 9:30 AM
Mass today. It is a time for them to
reflect on life, death and resurrection. It is a time for us to share with
them our support and prayers and
be ready to welcome them fully to
the Lord’s table.
HOLY THURSDAY
WASHING OF THE FEET
A memorable ritual which
occurs during our Holy
Thursday
Mass
is
the
Church’s tradition of washing
feet. Why do we wash feet?
Jesus says in the Holy Thursday Gospel, “If I, therefore,
the master and teacher, have
washed your feet, you ought
to wash one another's feet. I
have given you a model to
follow so that as I have done
for you, you should also do.”
This ritual, therefore, serves
as an expression of our call to
serve one another.
While optional, we are all
invited and encouraged to
participate in this moving
ceremony. As in previous
years, our priests and deacons will serve as the washers. Two additional stations
will be provided this year for
those who wish to wash the
feet of another person, as a
fuller sign of Jesus’ call to
service. If you plan to be part
of our Foot Washing ritual,
we encourage you to wear
sandals or simple footwear.

LA HORA CRUCIAL

Hay momentos cruciales en la vida relacionados con acontecimientos vitales personales
o sociales. En la Biblia se denominan, en singular, como la ‘hora’, que no se refiere tanto al
instante de la muerte como al del nacimiento.
En todo caso, la ‘hora’ es momento de entrega
final al servicio de la resurrección del reino.
Hay tres ‘horas’ bíblicas decisivas: la mesiánica (aparición del Salvador en la carne), la escatológica (definitivo regreso de Jesús en plenitud) y la caritativa (visitas de Dios cuando
actuamos con amor). La ‘hora’ está siempre
en relación con la manifestación salvadora de
Dios.
Para los evangelios, la ‘hora’ de Jesús es el
momento de su pasión y glorificación, cuando
muere el grano para dar fruto, que es manifestación de amor, nacimiento del hombre nuevo
y don del Espíritu. La ‘hora’ señalada en Caná
se realiza en la cruz, con la nueva multiplicación de la sangre redentora del Cordero.
Los discípulos no entienden del todo la ‘hora’,
como tampoco la entendemos nosotros. Pretendemos ver a Jesús sin seguirle hasta el final. Por amarnos egoístamente, nos perdemos; y por no servir a los hermanos, no llegamos al Padre.
La Semana Santa debe tener
un sentido religioso.
Durante la Semana Santa, que ya está muy
próxima, vamos a conmemorar la Pasión redentora de Jesús, ofreciéndose al Padre
Eterno como víctima por la redención de toda
la humanidad. Al asistir a los oficios religiosos
de la Semana Santa, debemos estar conscientes del valor y del significado redentor del sacrificio de Jesucristo Nuestro Señor. No se trata simplemente de recordar un hecho histórico
que pertenece al pasado. Tampoco se trata de
sentir compasión por Jesús. La Semana Santa
debe tener para nosotros un sentido religioso
más profundo. La Pasión de Cristo tiene un
valor transcendente y significa una redención
que es universal y permanente. La humanidad
entera fue redimida por el sacrificio de Cristo
en la cruz. Ese sacrificio selló la Nueva Alianza
entre Dios y la humanidad.
Precisamente, al celebrar la santa misa en
cumplimiento del mandato de Jesús, los católicos conmemoramos el establecimiento de la
Nueva Alianza entre Dios y su pueblo. En la
consagración del pan y del vino, realizada por
el sacerdote, Cristo está presente ofreciéndose
al Padre como víctima por nuestros pecados y
como alimento espiritual para nosotros. Por
eso la eucaristía es sacrificio y sacramento. Como sacrificio la eucaristía tiene valor infinito.
Por eso decimos con el sacerdote: “Este es el
Cordero de Dios que quita los pecados del
mundo”. Como sacramento la eucaristía es alimento que nos vivifica y da la vida eterna.
Lamentablemente, en la sociedad contemporánea, como en los tiempos de Jesús, predomina
una mentalidad hedonista, que considera el
placer y el bienestar personal como único fin
de la vida. Esa mentalidad pagana se manifiesta por todas partes y penetra incluso en ambientes cristianos. Hay muchos cristianos que
aborrecen el amor cuando este significa sacrificio, y sólo buscan dinero y placer. Para algunos
la cruz y el sacrificio no tienen sentido. Creen
que vivir es gozar, bailar, jugar, comer, tomar y
pasar la vida sin trabajar.
Reflexión
Paradójicamente, la vida de placeres es una vida vacía e infecunda. Por el contrario, la vida abnegada es siempre vigorosa y fecunda. Esto es lo que nos enseña
Jesús en el evangelio de hoy
cuando nos dice: “El que ama su
vida la destruye, y el que
desprecia su vida en este mundo
la conserva para la vida eterna.”

Un ritual memorable que se
produce durante nuestra misa
del Jueves Santo es la tradición
de lavar los pies en la Iglesia.
¿Por qué nos lavamos los pies?
Jesús dice en el Jueves Santo
Evangelio: "Si, pues, el Señor y el
Maestro, les he lavado los pies,
vosotros también debéis lavaros
los pies unos a otros. Te he dado
un modelo a seguir para que como yo he hecho con vosotros,
vosotros también hagáis. "Este
ritual, por lo tanto, sirve como
una expresión de nuestro llamado a servir a los demás.
Aunque opcional, todos estamos
invitados y animados a participar
en esta emotiva ceremonia. Como en años anteriores, nuestros
sacerdotes y diáconos servirán en
el lavado. Dos estaciones adicionales serán proporcionados este
año para aquellos que desean
para lavar los pies de otra persona, como un signo más completa
de la llamada de Jesús al servicio.
Si va a ser parte de nuestro ritual
de lavado de pies, te animamos a
usar sandalias o calzado simple.

Volunteer drivers needed
Licensed drivers are needed to drive a 12-ft. stake bed
truck to the Food Bank on Tuesday mornings.
We also want to develop a team that will be available
weekday mornings to pick up at Narbonne High School. The
shift would be one or two days a week.

Teaching children about boundaries
and safe touches is healthy
Teaching children about boundaries and safe touches is not
sex education. There are many safety issues we teach children: bike safety, water safety, fire prevention, driver's training, etc. Personal safety programs should have age appropriate lessons that give children the skills they need to protect
themselves without frightening them. Keeping children unaware of the dangers around them does not keep them safe.
Predators count on children not knowing what to do.

St. Margaret Mary Church is once again sponsoring “Get on the Bus”.
This year we are co-sponsoring two buses: one to the California Institute for
Women in Corona (CIW) on May 2nd for an early Mother’s Day celebration
and a second to the California Men’s Colony (CMC) in San Luis Obispo on
May 30th.
These trips unite children with their mothers and fathers in prison. The strengthening of
these relationships has proven to improve the family life of the children who are many
times lost in foster care or cared for by grandparents and sometimes separated from their
siblings. The cost of traveling—transportation, food and lodging—to these prisons can be a
hardship for those who care for these children and prevent many families from being reunited.
Today a second collection will be taken to help pay the expenses needed to make
these trips comfortable and enjoyable. Donations may also be made online at
www.getonthebus.us. Please specify the bus number, either CIW-02 or CMC-02. Checks
should be made payable to “Get on the Bus”. See us in the patio for more information.
