During the American Revolution, the legal separation of
the 13 original colonies from Great Britain occurred on
July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted
to approve a resolution of independence. After voting for
independence, Congress turned its attention to the
Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this
decision. Congress debated and revised the wording of the
Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. To read the

Fortnight of Freedom
The American Bishops initiated a campaign called the
Fortnight of Freedom due to a perceived attack on personal
and public religious liberty. They cited the health benefits
regulation established by the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services under the Affordable Health Care for
America Act, that requires employers that provide health
care insurance for their employees, including religious and
charitable organizations and religiously affiliated hospitals
and universities, to include coverage for contraception,
sterilization, and other forms of birth control.
The Bishops sought guarantees that would shield them
from lawsuits if they refused to make their facilities
available on a commercial basis to people or for events,
such as the celebration of same-sex marriages, to which the
Roman Catholic Church has moral objections. The bishops
reject the idea that the American government can determine
which of their activities should be identified as religious in
nature.
The Fortnight of Freedom is a prayerful response to these
threats to religious liberty. It is actually a 14-day period of
prayer, education and action that began on June 21.
However, it is never too late to become more aware of
these concerns.

Obispos estadounidenses iniciaron una campaña
llamada la quincena por la libertad debido a un ataque
percibido sobre la libertad religiosa personal y pública.
Citaron la regulación de beneficios de salud establecida
por el Departamento de salud y servicios humanos de los
Estados Unidos bajo el cuidado de salud accesible bajo

Pilgrimage to Rome
Fr. James is offering a 9 day/7night pilgrimage to Rome from Thursday, December 3, 2015
through Friday, December 11, 2015. This pilgrimage is a part of a larger celebration
commemorating the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council and
coincides with the official opening of the Holy Doors for the beginning of the Jubilee Year of
Mercy, beginning on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. For those who
are musicians or choir members, there is an opportunity to join in a “festival choir” that will
be singing at several major liturgical events throughout the pilgrimage. For those who are not
musicians/choir members, other activities will be planned. The overall itinerary includes daily Mass, site seeing in Rome, the
Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica, attending the Papal blessing on Sunday, December 6, attending Mass at St. Peter’s
on Monday, December 7, visiting the major basilicas (St. Mary Major, St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls, a day
trip to Assisi and Mass at the St. Francis Basilica, and more. The cost of the pilgrimage is
$3,823 and includes air fare economy class, ground transportation, US government taxes, fees,
fuel surcharges up to $600, entry fees, hotel accommodation based on double occupancy,
breakfast and dinner, and more. The fee excludes a single room supplement, personal services
including porterage and drinks, travel visa for non-U.S. passport holders, transportation to and
from the airport, daily lunches and drinks at dinners, airline luggage fees, travel insurance
(optional). Group tips are a total of $80. For more information go to:

Update
In the encyclical, Gospel of Life, St. John Paul II tells us that death was not God’s original plan for us.
Death came into the world as a result of the devil’s envy and the sins of our first parents. And death entered
in a violent way: Cain rose up against his brother, Abel, and killed him. ( Gen. 4:8)
But God did not leave the sin of Cain unpunished—the blood of one murdered demands God render justice .
Sins which cry out to God—first and foremost willful murder—in some way attack God himself. Yet not
even a murderer loses his personal dignity—God drove Cain out his presence and sent him into exile far from his native
land. So that he passed from a life of human kindness to one more akin to the wild existence of a wild beast.
Just as God drove Cain out of his presence with a mark so that no one kill him he does not desire that a homicide be
punished by the execution of another act of homicide. God preferred correction rather than the death [penalty] of the
sinner. EV 7-9

Weekend

Men and women between the ages of 18-45 who are searching and discerning God’s call in their lives are invited Holy
Name Retreat Center. Life Awareness is a weekend retreat of prayer, silent reflection, presentations, group discussions,
sharing on one-on-one encounters and guidance from priests and religious sisters and brothers, as you learn more about
priesthood and religious (consecrated) life. This retreat is designed to help young adults to learn and explore whatever
vocation God might be calling them. To search deeply for the guidance, and to grow in courage to do the will of God. It
will provide time, environment, and opportunity to clarify one’s calling without any pressure of commitment. Holy Name
Retreat center is located at 430 Bunker Hill Road, Houston, TX 77024. The retreat begins at 5 p.m. on Friay, July 24.

St. Vincent de Paul Society Black Bag Annual Collection
Every year, and only once a year, there is a collection made
throughout every parish in the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese
that is dedicated to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. These
funds play a crucial role in our ability to fund all of our
programs that feed, clothe, provide dignified living, and help
people find their way to self-sufficiency. Our Food Network,
Voucher Ministry and our ability to provide the support
necessary to those volunteers in a ten county area who provide
the Home Visit Ministry are all vital programs that rely on our
Black Bag collection, individual donations outside of the
parishes, corporate and foundation support.
This year’s Black Bag collection is July 12-13.
Why we use “Black Bags”
In 1833 Frederic Ozanam- age 19 (founder of the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul) along with 6 friends from his University heard
God calling them to serve the poor. They met with Blessed Sr.
Rosalie Rendu who taught them how to visit the poor in their
homes – this to help them fully experience the pain and suffering
these people were experiencing. After visiting the poor the
group of University Students decided they needed money to
continue this work. They decided to pool their resources
together; however, so as not to embarrass each other as to how
much each could afford to give they decided to take a secret
collection using a common black bag. Using the Black Bag
today enables everyone to give what they can afford without
being judged by their neighbor. The Black Bag established in
the early 1800’s still continues to this day to provide the
resources needed to care for the needs of the poor and
marginalized in our community. The passing of the Black Bag
from person to person brings the Body of Christ together in the
mission of caring for our neighbors.
The Spirituality of the Black Bag
Just as the spirit of charity moves among us all, the passing of
the Black Bag in parishes, companies and neighborhoods is
passed from hand to hand. As we act, one in the spirit of giving,
the lowly cloth bag is transformed into something beautiful and
deeply spiritual among friends. Yes, there is a spirituality of the
Black Bag .We should all be aware of the joy in giving to the
Lord.
